FARE-REGISTER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JENNm LINHARDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, borough of Manhattan, New York, have invented an Improved F are- Register, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a fare-register adapted to be carried by the conductor or other employee of a railway, etc., who is charged with the collection of the fares. The fare-register is provided with a knob which is depressed by the conductor when collecting a fare. By this depression a suitable counting mechanism is advanced for one number, and simultaneously a transfer ticket is released, which is handed by the conductor to the passenger. The register is further provided with a bell and with automatic means for stamping the hour of issue upon the released ticket.

The operating mechanism of my improved fare-register is inclosed within a casing 15, the back 16 of which is provided with a pair of eyes 17 adapted for the reception of the conductors belt. Casing 15 has an open front which may be closed by a hinged lid 18 and lock 19. WVithin the casing is arranged a vertically reciprocatory slide 20 normally held in its raised position by a spring 21 which is secured to back 16 of casing 15. Slide 20 is provided with an upper finger piece or knob 22 that projects beyond the top of casing 15 through a corresponding slot 23 thereof. Near its center, slide 20 is guided by a pin 24 secured to back 16 and passing through a slot25 of the slide, the disengagement of the latter from the pin being prevented by a disk 26, secured to the pin. ductor at each collection of a fare, and thus performs a fourfold function, viz-z first, it registers the fare by a suitable counting mechanism, second it sounds a bell, third, it releases a transfer ticket, and fourth, it stamps upon the ticket the hour of issue.
The fare-counting or adding device may be of any suitable construction, and does not form part of the present invention. It is composed of three drums, 27, 28 and 29, each provided at its periphery with the numerals 0, 1, 2, 3-9. Drum 27 represents the units, While drums 28 and 29 represent the tens and hundreds respectively. The numerals appearing at the front of the drums are exposed through corresponding apertures 30 of lid 18, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4-4 Drums 27, 28, 29 are rotatably mounted upon a fixed spindle 31 supported by arms 32, 33 of back 16. To the hub 3% of drum 27 is attached a ratchet wheel 35 provided with ten teeth corresponding to the ten numerals represented on the drum. Ratchet wheel 35 is adapted to be engaged by :a pawl 36 pivoted to an arm 37, projecting laterally from slide 20. Pawl 36 is provided with a shoulder 38 which is held against arm 37 by a spring 39 and thereby prevents an upward movement of the pawl beyond its horizontal position (Fig. 3) while .it may be freely swung down against the action of spring 39. It will be seen that upon a depression of slide 20, pawl 36 will advance ratchet wheel 35 for the distance of one tooth, so that drum 27 is rotated for the distance of one numeral. Upon the release of handle 22, spring 21 will return slide 20 to its raised position, during which movement pawl 36 will be swung downward while riding over the succeeding tooth of the ratchet wheel, to be finally projected into said tooth after having cleared the same. During this upward movement of pawl 36, ratchet wheel 35 is prevented from being taken along by a retaining spring 10.
After drum 27 has performed one complete rotation owing to successive depressions of .knob :22, drum 28 is advanced for one numeral, while upon one complete rotation of the latter drum 29 is advanced for one numeral. The construction for producing this result is well known in the art and is therefore not shown in the drawings.
The means for sounding a bell 41 upon each depression of knob 22 consist of a lever 42 loosely mounted upon a pin 13 projecting forwardly from back 16 through a vertical slot l i of slide 20. Pin 43 is embraced by a coiled spring -15, one end of which, by passing through an eye 46 of lever 11, tends to hold the latter in engagement with a fixed stop 47. To the free end of spring 45 is secured a clapper 18 adapted to strike bell 41. The tail 49 of lever 42 is arranged in the path of a spring-arm 50 secured to slide 20. Upon each descent of the latter, arm 50 will by depressing tail 4L9 lift clapper 48 until said arm finally slips off tail 49 to permit the return of lever 42 and clapper 48 into their original positions, thereby sounding the bell.
Simultaneous with the depression of handle 22, a transfer ticket is released in the following manner: To the front end of stem 51, which also supports bell 41, is loosely fitted a flanged reel 52. Upon the hollow stem 53 of the latter is wound a paper web 54, forming a continuous strip of transfer tickets. Strip 54 passes from reel 52 partly around a feed drum 55 which may be provided with radially extending pins 56, to prevent slipping of the strip over the drum. From the latter, web 54 passes over idler 57 and plate 58 to finally leave casing 15 through a slot 59 thereof. Feed drum 55 is loosely mounted upon a fixed axle 60 and is provided with a ratchet wheel 61 adapted to be engaged by a retaining pawl 62. Ratchet wheel 61 is faced by a second ratchet wheel 63, also loosely mounted upon axle 60. Upon the contacting hubs of ratchet wheels 61 and 63 is wound a spring 61, one end of which is secured to a post 65 of wheel 61, while its other end is secured to a post 66 of wheel 63.
Ratchet wheel 63 is normally engaged by a detent 67 formed on one arm of a lever 68, pivoted at 69 to the back 16 of casing 15. The other arm of lever 68 is provided with a nose 70, arranged in the path of a springarm 71 of slide 20. Detent 67 is held in engagement with ratchet wheel 61 by a spring 72 secured to pivot 69.
In the normal position of the parts, i. a. when the apparatus is ready for the registration of a new fare, spring (it is tightly wound around the hubs of ratchet wheels 61, 63 so that the ticket is locked against movement. Upon a depression of handle 22, arm 71 will engage nose of lever 68 and thereby tilt the latter to withdraw detent 67 from ratchet wheel 63. Spring 61 being thus liberated will partly unwind, thereby rotating ratchet wheel 63 while wheel 61 remains stationary. \Vhen slide 20 returns to its raised position, arm 71 will clear nose 70 so that detent 67 will reengage ratchet wheel 63. The conductor now grasps the end of the transfer-ticket projecting from casing 15 through slot 59 and draws the same out, thereby rotating feed drum 55.
In this way spring 64 is again placed under tension and the further advance of strip 54: will be checked, as soon as spring 61 has been tightly wound. around the hubs of ratchet wheels 61, 63. The conductor in drawing the strip downwards over the outer edge of plate 58 will tear off one ticket. The length and tension of spring 64 is such that it will permit the rotation of drum 55 to an extent corresponding to the length of one ticket, so that only one ticket will be given out at each registration of a fare. The tickets are preferably provided with con secutive numbers, which tally with the numbers exposed through apertures 30 of lid 18.
During each registration of a fare, the transfer ticket is stamped with the hour of issue in the following manner: In a bearing 73 of casing 15 turns loosely an axle 741- provided at its ends with cranks'7 5, '7 6. Crank 75 has a pin 77 received within a slot 78 of an arm 79 projecting laterally from slide 20. Crank 76 is by curved link 80 operatively connected to a plunger 81 playing within a frame or guide 82 secured to casing 15. Within the lower end of plunger 81 is rotatably mounted a stem 83 which projects out of casing 15 through a vertical slot 84 thereof and here carries a knob, 85. The latter is provided with a pointer 86 that plays over a dial 87 marked with the hours, 1-12 a. m. and 112'p. 111. To stem 83 is keyed a stamp wheel 88, carrying at its periphery the numbers corresponding to the hours 1-12 a. 1n. and 1-12 p. 111., said numbers being not shown in the drawing. To wheel 88 is secured a ratchet wheel 89 engaged by a retaining spring 90 which prevents accidental rotation of the stamp wheel, after it has been set for a certain hour. To the lower end of frame 82 is hinged at 91 an ink pad 92 which is normally held against the lower edge of wheel 88 by a spring 93.
At each descent of slide 20, plunger 82 will also receive a downward movement through arm 79 cranked axle 74 and link 80. During this descent of the plunger, pad 92 will be swung out of the way by the lower edge of stamp wheel 88, so that the latter will make the desired colored imprint upon that portion of strip 5% which rests on support 58. hen the conductor subsequently withdraws the transfer-ticket upon the re lease of knob 22, it has thus been automatioally provided with the hour of issue.
It will be seen that by the construction described, each fare paid by a passenger is properly registered, a bell is sounded, and a transfer ticket is delivered which is automatically stamped with the hour of issue.
Each passenger receives the stamped ticket from the conductor and holds it as a receipt for the fare as well as for transfer purposes. Inasmuch, therefore, as the number of tickets delivered by the apparatus corresponds to the number of passengers carried, a check will be placed upon the conductor in addition to that obtained by the registering mechanism. 'As the number of the last ticket delivered must be the same as that exposed through openings 30, any tampering with the apparatus is also effectively prevented.
I claim:
1. A fare-register comprising a casing, a slotted slide movable therein; a pin engaging the slide, a lever fulcrumed to the pin, a spring engaging the lever and carrying a clapper, and a spring-arm on the slide adapted to engage the lever, substantially as specified.
2. A fare-register comprising a casing, a slide movable therein, a pair of ratchet Wheels, a spring intermediate said wheels, a feed drum connected. to one of said wheels, and means controlled by the slide for releasing the other wheel, substantially as specified.
3. A fareregister comprising a casing, a slide movable therein and provided with an arm, a springinfiuenced lever adapted to be engaged by said arm, a ratchet wheel adapted to be engaged by the lever, a feed drum, and a spring intermediate ratchet wheel and feed drum, substantially as specified.
A. A fare-register comprising a slide having an arm, a lever adapted to be engaged thereby, a first ratchet wheel adapted to be engaged by the lever, a second ratchet wheel, a coiled spring intermediate said wheels, a retaining pawl engaging the second wheel, and a feed-drum carried by said second wheel, substantially as specified.
5. A fare-register comprising a slide, a crank axle operatively connected thereto, a plunger actuated by said crank axle, a stamp wheel rotatably mounted in the plunger, and a ticket support below the stamp wheel, substantially as specified.
6. A fare-register comprising a slide, a crank axle operatively connected thereto, a plunger actuated by said crank axle, a guide for the plunger, a stamp wheel carried by the plunger, an ink pad hinged to the lower end of the guide, and a ticket support below the stamp wheel, substantially as specified.
