MAURUS FISOH, OF VIENNA, AUSTRIA-HUNGARY.
MASSAGING- DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 12, 1909.
Application filed March 11, 1908. Serial No. 420,420.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAUnUs Fison, physician, of Vienna, 1., Getreidemarkt 14L, Austria-Hungary, and a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, have invented new and useful Improvements in lviassaging Devices.
This invention relates to an improved device constructed and arranged to permit of. massaging portions of the human body in regions adjacent vital organs for the purpose of artificially inducing increasing or restoring respiration.
The device of my invention has many utilities and may be used in various ways to obtain the desired result in massaging treatments all of which will be obvious to those skilled in medical science and other sciences for the treatment of the human body.
The invention 'ill be more fully described in connection with the accompanying drawing and will be more particularly pointed out and ascertained in and by the appended claims.
In the drawing :Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a massaging device embodying the main features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof.
Like numerals of reference designate similar parts throughout the different figures of the drawing.
As shown my invention comprises a sup port 3 adapted to be anchored in any convenient manner, said support being shown curved so as to fit the human body and be strapped thereon if desired. A member 1 is mova bly mounted on said support and carries massaging implements 9 and 10. Preferably said member 1 is angular and resembles a bell-crank lever and at the juncture of the arm of said lever or member there is provided a universal mounting connecting said member 1 with the support 3. As shown said universal mounting comprises an element 2 which is connected with the member 1 by a normally horizontally disposed rivet 2 at one end at its other end is mounted on a disk or plate 3 which latter is connected with the support 3 by a normally vertically disposed pivot 3*. It will be seen from the foregoing that the pivot 3 will permit of any desirable or required lateral movement of the member 1 and that the pivot 2 will permit of movement of the member 1 in any desired vertical or down direction.
One of the features of my invention is that it may be operated wholly by one hand and arm of the operator leaving the other hand free to perform such service as may be required in connection with the patient. In the specific embodiment shown a handle 11 is rigidly secured to one arm or extension of the member 1 and an arm rest or engaging member 12 is secured to the other arm or extension of the member 1. The parts are so proportioned and the handle 11 and rest 12 are so disposed that the operator when grasping the handle 11 with his right hand, for instance, may repose that portion of the right arm adjacent the elbow in the rest 12 so that when it is desired to impart movement to the lever l to bring the massaging member or implement 9 into engagement with the body such movement and the pressure exerted will be imposed upon the handle 11 whereas when a reverse movement is desired to bring the massaging implement into engagement with the body the operator will actuate the member 1 by means of the arm and through the rest 12. It will therefore be seen that the massaging treatment to induce or increase respiration can be carried on by alternately massaging the body at different points. The implement 9 for instance may be brought to bear upon that portion of the body in the region of the heart and the implement 10 may be subsequently brought into engagement with portions of the body adjacent the bowels and such alternate treatment of vital organism may be carried on so as to very effectively stimulate respiration, the patient inhaling and exhaling in consonance with the movement imparted to the massaging device. \Vhen the implement 9 is in engagement with that region of the body adjacent the heart the massaging action due to direct pressure of the part 9 upon the body may be supplemented by a lateral movement of the part 9 around the pivot 3 It will thus be seen that the massaging treatment can be carried on by direct pressure of the massaging implements upon the body and also by a lateral movement or rubbing action, as condition requires. The massaging implement 9 is desirably made in the form of a human hand to render the massaging action as natural as possible and in order that the implement 9 may readily adapt itself to the contours of bodies of different sizes it is supported by a ball joint 8, a tightening screw 8' is provided to release the imple ment 9 from its support when desired. In order to afford the required adjustment the implement 9 is extendible and contractible with respect to the member 1 and as shown the latter is adapted to receive an extension 7 to which the ball joint 8 is secured which extension 7 is adjustable with respect to the member 1 by means of a winged setscrew 1 The implement 10 is movably mounted at 10 to an extension 13 which may be adjusted with respect to the member 1 by a winged screw 5 as shown. It will thus be seen that the support 3 may be located at any desired point upon the human body or at any prescribed point and that implements 9 and 10 may be adjusted so that during the massaging treatment they will engage those portions of the body adjacent the organs the action of which it is desired to stimulate.
I claim 1. A massaging device comprising in com bination, a support, a member movably mounted on said support and provided with a handle and an arm rest, and massaging implements mounted on said member.
2. A massaging device comprising in combination, a support, an angular member movably mounted on said support, massaging implements adjustably mounted on said member for massaging remote points of a human body alternately, and a handle and arm rest for said member.
3. A massaging device comprising in combination, a support shaped to fit the human body, a manually operable member movably mounted on said support, and massaging implements mounted on said member.
4:. A massaging device comprising in combination, a support shaped to fit the human body, a member movably mounted on said support and provided with means whereby it may be actuated jointly by the hands and arm of the operator, and massaging implements mounted on said member.
5. A massaging device comprising in combination, a support shaped to fit the human body, a member movably mounted on said support provided with means whereby it may be actuated jointly by the hand and arm of the operator, and a massaging implement mounted on each end of said mem her.
6. A massaging device comprising in combination, a support shaped to fit the human body, a manually operable massaging mechanism movably mounted on said support for alternately massaging remote points of the human body.
7. A massaging device comprising in combination, a support shaped to fit the human body, a manually operable member movably mounted on said support, and a massaging implement adjustably mounted on each end of said member.
In testimony whereof I atfix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
