Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 6, 1908. Serial No. $125,4t09.
Patented Jan. 12, 190%.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, Amos Gr. Frrz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Auburn, in the county of Androscoggin and State of Maine, have invented new and useitul Improvements in Last-Supports, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in lasts and more particularly to a construction of lasts designed to prevent splitting on horizontal lines of cleavage.
it is well known that lasts are subjected to great strain in certain processes of shoe making and that it frequently happens that the last splits horizontally at a point at or near the bottom of the thimble hole or about the vertical center of the last. I
Lasts are sometimes made with a thimble and sometimes with a spindle whereby they are supported by a complemental member of the lasting or other machine. I have illustrated my invention in connection with lasts having both a thimble and a spindle.
support.
Figure 1 is an elevation partly in section of my invention as embodied. in a last provided with a thimble and Fig. 2 is an elevation partly in section of my invention as embodied in a last provided with a spindle.
My invention consists in anchoring the last support, thimble or spindle, in the wood of the last below the medial line and in making the lower extremity of the support of less diameter than the upper part.
in Fig. 1 A represents a last and B a hollow last support provided with projections G which extend over and rest upon the solid Wood of the last. Extending down through the bottom of the last support B is a rivet D headed on its upper end E in the last support and anchored against the bottom of the last by heading its lower end upon a bur F, said bur being drawn against the bottom of the last so as to compress the wood of the last around the rivet, thereby tending powerfully to resist any tendency of the last to split. I do not intend to limit myself, however, to forming the thimble and rivet of two separate parts.
In Fig. 2 the last support is in a spindle form provided with an overhanging flange G adapted to rest on the wood of the last at the top and with a bur H on the lower end adapted to be pressed against the bottom of 683 the last with force suficient to compress the wood of the last, operating to resist a tendency of the last to split in the same manner terminate a short distance above the plate,
the last being countersunk from the bottom as seen at J, the diameter of the bore of the countersink being greater than the diameter of the spindle so as to provide a bearing K for the bur. A plug L may be inserted in the bore J to take the lasting tacks.
The advantages of my improved last are that a single device serves the purpose of a last support and also prevents the last from splitting) horizontally under the strain caused y the jack or other machine upon the last support. This is especially important in case of lasts in the smaller sizes.
Having thus described my invention and its use I claim: 7
1. The combination with a last havin a last support-receiving hole therein, of a Fast support therefor provided with the means for anchoring it to the last below the vertical center and above the bottom thereof.
2. The combination with a last having a last support-receiving hole therein of varying diameters extending entirely through the last, of a last support therefor provided with means for anchoring it to the last at either side of the vertical medial line of the last, the point of anchorage below said line peing spaced apart above the bottom of the ast.
3. The combination with a last having last support-receiving hole therein extending entirely through the last, of a last support l ast support receiving hole therein extending entirely through the last, of a last su port therefor comprising a hollow thimb e specification in presence of two subscribing wltnesses this 24th day of March. 1908.
and a solid extension, said extension being AMOS FITZ' 5 anchored in the last above the bottom 5 In presence ofthereof.
1 TASCUS A'rwoon,
In testimony whereof I have signed this E. L. PHILOON.
