CALENDAR.
To all whomit may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. HALL, a` citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Calendars, of which the following is a specification.
My improved calendar is constructed with special reference to ermitting ready and accurate reference to e made thereto for any particular time within a large range of years.
The primary object of my invention is to construct a calendar in such manner as that the same may be readily adjusted to correctly show any calendar month covering a large range of years, the parts being so constructed and arranged that they will indicate when the calendar mechanism is properly adjusted to show the correct calendar month for any year which the calendar is adapted to designate.
Another object is to construct the movable parts of a calendar so that, when properly regulated, the months, days and years therein will present a uniform and harmonious appearance, which not only facilitates the reading of the same, but likewise conforms, in appearance, to the ordinary commercial calendar now in extensive use.
Another object of my invention is to provide the calendar frame with a suitable mat, which not only tends to beautify the a pearance of theopen' face in the calendar rame, but serves the further purpose of properly concealing the inner parts o the device from view.
The invention consists in the features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of my device, the front of the frame having been removed as well as the laterally movable ribbon; Fig. 2 a similar View to Fig. 1, with the laterally movable ribbon in normal position; Fig. 3 a front view of the calendar as used; andFig. 4 an elevation of the laterally movable strip of ribbon having the days of the months indicated thereon.
Suitably j ournaled` within a calendar frame 5 are upper and lower rollers 6 and 7 respectively, which in turn are adapted to actuate a vertically movable endless ribbon 8 which has printed thereon the twelve months of the year, and for the name of each month a specially arranged, row of figures, the name of each month and its specia y arranged row of Patented Jan. 12, 1909.

figures being equidistant apart. Upon the upper roller 6 aforesaid, and at one end thereof, is a button 8', thus enabling the user to neadily manipulate the endless ribbon as desired. A pair of similar rollers 9 and- 10 respectively are referably vertically mounted within said ca endar frame, and are adapted to shift a calendar strip 11, and as shown in Fig. 4, has the various months printed thereon, said strip being shifted from one roller to the other by means of the buttons 12 near the lower corners of the calendar frame.
As indicated in Fig. 3, a mat 13 is placed over the working parts of the calendar, and in the construction shown has an upper elongated slit 14, an intermediate squared opening 15 and a lower rectangular opening '16 at the base of the frame. This arrangement not only permits the inner parts of the calendar to be concealed from view, but enables the particular month which will appear in the cated in the intermediate opening, and the various years as indicated in the loweropening to be readily examined and the exact desired information obtained.
In Fig. 4 is shown a section of ribbon having the various days of the month imprinted thereon, as well as a hand 17 having its index finger pointing downwardly toward the years appearing in the opening below. In order that the calendar may readily indicate when it is properly set to re resent any month for any yearfor which t e calendar may be intended to be used, I prefer to print, for example, the months having thirty-one days t erein, and the figures in section 18, ina particular color or style ol' type, the months having thirty days therein and the figures in section 19 in a-peculiar and distinctive manner as distinguished from those ol' section 18, and likewise the month of February and the figures in section 2() in still anotherl manner or style lin order that months having different numbers of days therein can be readily designated and shifted as desired when in use.
Referrin now to FiO. 3, by turning the button 8 t e endless ribbon strip 8 is shifted until the name of the month desired registers through the opening 14 and at the same time the speciall arranged row of figpearance with. month indicated will register through the lower opening 16. It will be observe that each row of figures on this strip,

It is to -be understood that the particular method of identifyin .-lar means for accomplishing this result.
This intermediate opening 15 is just large enough, as indicated, to show seven columns of the laterally movable ribbon strip 11 at one time, and referring to Fig. 4, section 18, it will be seen that any seven contiguous columns of this section will form a com lete calendar table of thirty-one days. pon the various sections of this laterally movable ribbon strip 11 aforesaid, and upon the lower border thereof, is an index hand 17 at the bottom of one column in each section, the position of this column being such in each section that it will always be one of any seven contiguous columns formin a calendar table. As the laterally movab e strip 1 1 is shifted Within the intermediate opening 15 aforesaid the index hand will always travel just above the lower elongated opening 16 of the calendar frame, pointing downwardly; and the arrangement of the printed matter on the two strips is such that if the colors in the name of the month and calendar table correspond the calendar table will accurately represent the month indicated at the to for every year found in the section at thel ottom which the index hand is pointing to. Any other suitable designating mark will, of course accomplish the same purpose, but for general use I prefer to use the index hand in connection with various colors as one of the objects aimed at in this invention is to produce a calendar good for a number of years and yet eflicient and simle in operation, and at the same time convorming so closely in ap ter of readin to the a of commercia calendars now in use that the public will readily adopt it.

In the table 0f years for the month of February, the leap years may have some distinguishing mark, as indicated in Fig. 4, section 20, so that anyone reading the calendar 'table may know when to count the 29 days. y
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a calendar, a movable ribbon having thereon the months of the year and a table of years divided into seven columns, a movable transverse ribbon havin the days of the month thereon divided into columns, any seven consecutive columnsfjshowing a complete calendar table adapted to rregister with the seven columns into which the table of years is divided, and means for regulating the,

In a calendar, a frame, a mat secured to the face of the frame, said mat having upper, intermediate and lower o enings, tWo prlnted ribbon strips adapte to move at right angles with respect to one another, one ofthe str1 s having printed u on its face the names of t e months and a tab e of years divided into seven columns, the other stri having upon its face sections of different ca endar months divided into columns, any seven consecutive columns showing a complete calendar table adapted to register with the seven columns into which the table of years is divided, the respective strips, when properly adjusted, being adapted to display a common distinguishing mark, substantially as described.
4. In a calendar, upper and lower ribbon rollers, a movable ribbon having the months of the ear and a table of years thereon divided into seven columns positioned upon said rollers, a air of ribbon rollers mounted in the sides o the frame, a movable transverse ribbon having the days of the months thereon divided intocolumns, any seven consecutive columns showing a com letel calendar table adapted to register wit i the seven columns into which the table of years is divided, positioned upon said rollers and adapted to be actuated therefrom, and means I for regulating the movable ribbons for readily ascertaining a particular date, substantially as described.
5. ln a calendar, a movable ribbon having thereon the months of the year and a specially arranged table of years divided into seven sections, a movable transverse ribbon having thereon the days of the months divided into columns, any seven consecutive columns showing a complete calendar table adapted to register with the seven columns into which the table of years is divided, said transverse ribbon having the figures divided iiito three sections of 13 columns each, one section being adapted to-show a complete calendar table of 31 days commencing on any day of the Week, another section being l adapted to show a complete calendar table of 30 days commencing on any day of the week, another section being ada ted to show a complete calendar table of tlie month of February commencing on any day of the Week, each section having, in its seventh column, a suitable designating mark adapted to register with one of the year sections thereunder, to indicate when the saine is properly adjusted, and means for regulating the ribbons, substantially as described.

In a calendar, a movable ribbon having the months of the year printed in colors corresponding to the colors of the correct calendar tables therefor and a table of years divided into seven sections, a movable transverse ribbon having the days of the months divided into three differently colored calendar table sections,` any seven consecutive columns in any one section showing a complete calendar table adapted to register with the seven columns of the table of years, each section of the transverse ribbon having the days of the months divided into thirteen columns and having. in its seventh columnv a suitable designating mark adapted to register with one of the year sections to indicate when the same is roperly adjusted,and means for regulating tie ribbons for readily ascertaining a dparticular date, substantially as describe 8.
