APPLICATION FILED NOV. 13, 1907.
Patented Jan. 12, 1909.

Application filed November 13, 19-37.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Anna BELLJRIVE, a subject of the King of England, residing at St. Elizabeth, in the Province of Manitoba, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grain-Drills; and I do hereby declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention has reference to grain drills and it aims generally, to provide an exceedingly simple inexpensive and effective machine of that class including a yieldingly mounted colter wheel, a boot disposed in the rear thereof and a furrow covcrer yieldingly connected to the boot.
With the above and other ends in view, the invention consists in the particular construction. combination and arrangement of parts, all. as hereinafter fully described specifically claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which like parts are designated by corresponding reference numerals tl'iroughout the several views.
Of the said drawings: Figure 1 is a fragmental side elevation of a grain drill constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line :22 thereof. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the boot. Fig. 1 is a horizontal section through the colter wheel and the boot, parts being removed. Fig. 5 is a per spective view of the furrow coverer.
Referring more particularly to the drawings. designates the rearwardly-extending trailbar which is pivoted at its forward end to the frame beam 6 of the drill and is further connected therewith by an expansible coil spring 7, which embraces a rod 8 secured at one end to said bar and having its other end extending through an opening 9 formed in said beam. Towards its rear end, the trail-bar is bifurcated as shown in Fig. 2 and is provided at such point with a colter wheel 11 rotatably mounted upon a journal pin 10 extending across the bifurcation. The colter is thus held yieldingly Specification of Letters Patent.

against the surface of the ground by the tension of the spring 7 as will be understood. The colter is of the ordinary construction and its beveled edges are cleaned by a pair of forwardly-extending scrapers 12 which are secured at their rear ends to the heel portion of a boot 13, on opposite sides thereof, said scrapers being held against the colter by means of a pair of curved springs 17, disposed upon opposite sides of the trail-bar. The lower end of each spring is secured to the adjacent scraper, while the upper end thereof is attached to the adjacent end of a pin 18, which passes through a horizontal opening formed in the rear end of the trail bar. The boot is provided with a forwardly-projecting lug 19 which fits between the free ends of the arms formed by the bifurcation above referred to, the pin 18 passing through. said arm ends and through the lug, so as to efiect a pivotal connection of the boot with the trail-bar. The rear face of the boot has secured thereto the shorter arm of an inverted c -shaped bracket 14, to the free end of which arm is hinged a covering plate 15. This plate is held yieldingly in position by an expansible coil spring 16. which is interposed between said plate and the other arm of said bracket and embraces a pin 20 which is formed upon or secured to the plate 15, said pin extending through a perforation formed in the last mentioned arm of said bracket.
From the foregoing description, it will apparent that the seed will be fed from the boot into the furrows drilled by the colter, the furrows being subsequently closed by the coverer.
l i hat is claimed is:
The combination, with a frame, of a rearwardly-extending trail-bar pivoted at its forward end to said frame and provided at its rear end with a bifurcation; a journal pin extending across said bifurcation; a colter rotatably mounted upon said pin; a boot pivotally connected with the rear end of said. trail-bar; a pair of scrapers secured to the heel of said boot and bearing against opposite sides of said colter; a spring disthe other arm of said bracket and said plate, posed upon each side of the trail-bar and for yieldingly holding the latter in position. 10
connected with the adjacent scraper for hold I n testimony whereof, I afiiX my signaing the same in place against the colter; an tnre, in presence of two Witnesses.
inverted V-shaped bracket having one arm AIME BELLERIVE. thereof secured to the rear face of said boot; Witnesses:
a covering plate hinged to the free end of PHILIAS AUGER, sald arm; and a spring 1nterposed between i JOsEPI-I LAMOUREUX.
