DRILL.
Be it known that I, DAVID W. Rowmnns,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Minersville, in the co ty of Schuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Im rovements in Drills, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in v drills such as are employed for coal or other mining, one object 0 the invention being to effect an improvement in the construction of the drill bits; another object being to improve the construction of the socket member to which the drill bits are attached; a further object being to combine with the socket member a revoluble locking member having wed e-shaped fingers to engage the shanks of the its and detachably lock the bits to the socket member.
With these and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction of elements and their arrangement 11]. o erative,
combination claimed.
In the accompanying-drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a drill constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section upon the line 33 of Fig. 1 on an enlarged scale.
hereinafter fully descri ed and Fig. 4 is aside elevation ofthe locking member. Fig. 5 is a perspective view illustrating different forms of chisel bits employed with the present invention.
In the accompanying drawings the numeral 1 designates the main stock of the drill. This stock 1 comprises a lurality'of tubular members having their ends provided with male and female threads whereby a number of members may be successively cofipled together to enlarge the stock of the dr' when desired. The hollow members 1 are provided with longitudinally extending transverse alining. slots or openings 2, the urpose of which will hereinafter be set forth. he upper member of the stock 1 is adapted for the reception of a tamping element 3. This tamping element or member is constructed of copperand is provided with a longitudinal'slot 4, adapted to provide a means forthe insertion of a needle while the powder is tamped in the hole made by the drill.
The lowermost member of the main stock 1 is provided with a reducing coupling 5.
This coupling 5 is provided with a central Bpociflcation of Letters Patent.
Application filed s a-11.17, 1908. Serial No. 127,714.
the interior threads of t Patented. Jan. 5, 1909.,
ing exterior threads ada ted to engage with lie lower member of. the main stock, and wherebyv the two elements are connected, The coupling member 5 is also provided with an interiorly threaded portion 8, adapted for the reception of a threaded extension 9 provided upon a socket member 10. This coupling member 10 is provided with a central opening 11 alining with the opening 6 of the coupling 5 and the bores of the members of the main stock 1. series of s aced vertical bores or channels 12, positione adjacent the perimeter of the socket. These bores 12 are adapted for the reception of a reduced shank 13 provided upon the bits 14. The'shanks 13 are-provided with transverse slots or cut away por-' tions 15, and these cut away portions are adapted to be engaged b the tapering fingers 16 provided upon a ocking member 17 positioned upon the thimble 9 of the coupling 10 between the body of the coupling and the member '5.
By reference to 3 of the drawings itgers whereby the shanks 13' of t'he'bits 14. ma be positioned within the bore 12 of the soc et 10 and the slot 15 brought into position to be engaged by the wedge shaped fingers 16 when the locking member 17 is rotatedto securely retain the bits upon the socket.
The bits 14, it will be noted by reference to Fig. 5 ofthe drawings, may be constructed. in any variety of shapes, but each is provided with an upper rectangular portion 18, and the lower base of the socket 10 is also provided with a pluralit of rectangular openings radiating from t e center and communicating with the bores 12 and adapted for the ,rece tion of the rectangular portions 18 of ,will be noted that the inner edges of the bits The socket 10 is provided with a sel bits 19 are positioned are spaced a slight distance away from each other so as to provide a passage communicating with the central bore of the device, thus roviding means whereby the material in which the drill is worked is forced through the bore and out through the longitudinal openings 2,. thus providing means whereby t e formation of the substance is readily determined and whereby the bore is effectively cleaned.
Havin thus fully described the invention what is c aimed as new is: 1. In a drill, a main stock, a socket member connecting with the main stock, a locking member upon the socket member provided with spaced wedge shaped fingers, the socket member being provided with a plurality 0t longitudinal bores, chisel bits havmg reduced shanks provided with transverse channels for the bores of the socket member, and the transverse channels of the shanks adapted to be engaged by the wedge shaped fingers of the locking member.
2. In a drill, a main shank having a central bore, a cou ling also provided with a central bore an having a threaded extensoonest sion connected with the main shank, a-socket member having a reducedextension and provided with a central bore connected with the cou ling the socket member bein provided wit a lurality of spaced longitu al openings a jacent its perimeter and having radiating passages at its lowerface communicating wit the openings, a locking member rotatably mounted upon the extension of the socket member and shaped fingers, chisel Sits having their body portions provided with reduced shankshavlng transverse slots, for the bores of the socket member, and the transverse slots of the shanks adapted to be engaged by the wedged shaped fingers of the locking member to dposition the bodies of the bits within the ra iating passages provided upon the face of the socket member.
rovided with. wedge In testimony whereof I afiix my signature Witnesses:
