`l"'"` `GEORGE ALBERT SWINEFORD, OF CANTON, OHIO.
Doon-HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 5, 1909.
Application filed March 9, 1907. Serial No. 361,445.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LGEORGE ALBERT SWIM:- ronD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented an Improvement in Door-Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hinged hangers for use in suspending a door on a track; and the objects of the invention are to provide a hanger which can be easily assembled on or otl the track, and when connected with the door can be easily and readily placed on and removed from the track from the side thereof, and` when on thetrack will be uarded against being accidentally remov therefrom. These general objects and other minor ones relating to details are attained by the construction and arrangement illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view of a piece of track and sections of two doors, one of which is suspended vertically and the other swung outward on the hinge pivot; Fig. 2, a side elevation of one hanger located on a section of track;` Fig. 3, a vertical section on line 3-3, Fig. 2;` Fig. 4, a perspective View of the several parts of the hanger separated from their assembled position; and Fig. 5, a detached perspective view of an alternate form of the yoke.
Similar numerals refer to similar throughout the drawings.
The track 1 may be of the usual type and is preferably formed of a vertically disposed fiat bar which may be attached on the side parts `of a building above the door opening (not shown) lby means of the T-shaped bracket 2, the stem of which is connectedwith the middle part of the track bar, thus leaving the edges, the outer side, and the upper and lower parts of the-inner side of the track bar free from any obstruction.
The track member of the hanger is preferably composed of the frame or hood 3 in which the vertically disposed roller 4 is journaled. The roller is provided with the peripheral groove 5, which is adapted to engage over and to travel on the upper edge of the track bar. These features of construction may be of any ordinary and wellknown form and do not comprise any part of the present invention.
The straps 6, of which there are prefer- `the hanger bearings.
ably two, one being located at each end of the hood, `depend from the outer side of the hood, and on the lower ends of these straps are formed or attached the bearings 7 for the pivot-pins 8, the straps being bent or inclined so that these bearings are located directly under the track bar when the roller is mounted thereon, as shown more particularly inFig. 3.
The yokes 9 are suspended from the hanger bearings by means of the-pivot-pins, the same being passed through the journal apertures 10 in the arms of the yokes, and Each pivot-pin is preferably provided with a head 11 on one end, and when inserted through the hanger bearing and the yoke-arms, are conveniently held in place by the ordinary key 12 inserted through the aperture 13 in the protruding part of the other end. The yokes are pre erably` secured to the door by means of the U-shaped straps 14, as shown, which straps are adapted to be fastened to the door by means of the bolts l5 passed through the apertures 16 in the branches of the strap and into and, if necessary through, the door. The upper ends of the said branches are bent over the upper edge of the door 17 and thence downward along the other side thereof, thus forming the loop or bail 18 which is engaged over the horizontal bar 19 of the yoke 9,; and the downwardly extending portions 20 of the door straps may be providedwith the apertures 16 through which the bolts 15 may also be passed, thus firmly securing the bail formed straps to the door.
It is evident that by fastening the yokes against the upper edge of the door by means of the strap bails, as shown in Fig. 1, the yokes are rigidly fastened to the door, and that the yokes and straps together comprise two-piece door members of the hangers; and it is also evident that the yokes can be formed integral with the straps, if desired, as shown in Fio. 5, thus forming one-piece door members, tbut the separate yokes and straps are preferred for convenience and economy in manufacture.
The upper and outer edges 21 of the arms of the yokes are curved so that when the parts are assembled said curved portions will be located adjacent to the lower edge of the track bar, and on the inner parts of the arms of the yokes are provided the fingers 22 which normally extend upward and in rear of the lower part of the track bar. rlhe upper edges of the yoke-arms being adjacent to the lower edge of the track bar and the yoke-fingers being extended behind the track bar, it is impossible for the wheel to be raised sufficiently to jump the track; and furthermore it is impossible for the hanger bearings and the yokes to be swung outward so that the rollers can be lifted from the track. But, by swinging the door outward on the pivotpins, as shown at 17 in F ig. l, the yokeiingers, being fixed on the door members, are rotated downwardly far enough to clear the lower edge of the track bar, whereupon the hanger bearings and the yokes are free to be moved outward to clear the track bar, and the rollers can be readily lifted off the track. It is also evident that the track member and the door member of the hanger can be assembled or taken apart by merely inserting or removing the pivot-pin.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A hanger for suspending a slidingdoor on a track-bar comprising a hood having a grooved-roller journaled therein adapted to engage and travel on the trackbar and having pendent-bearings located under the same, yokes pivoted to the pendent-bearings having the upper portions of their sides curved and.located adjacent to the track-bar and having fingers normally extending upward behind the same, and straps fastened to the sides of the door and engaging the yokes.
2. A hanger for suspending va slidingdoor on a track-bar comprising one member having a grooved-roller journaled therein adapted to travel on the track-bar and having pendent-bearings normally located under the same, and yokes secured to the door and detachably pivoted to the pendentbearings, the upper edges of the yokes being curved and located adjacent to the track-bar and having fingers normally extending upward in rear of the same.
3. .A hanger for suspending a slidingdoor on a track-bar comprising one member having a grooved-roller journaled therein adapted to travel on the track-bar and having a pendent-bearing normally located under the same, and another member secured to the door and detachably pivoted to the pendent-bearing including an arm having its end curved and located adjacent to the track-bar and having `a finger normally extending upward in rear of the same.
4. A hanger for suspending a slidingdoor on a track-bar comprising one member having a grooved-roller journaled therein adapted to travel on the track-bar and having a pendent-bearing normally located under the same, and another member secured to the door and detachably pivoted to the pendent-bearing and provided with an arm having' its end located adjacent to the track-bar and having a linger normally extending upward in y:ear of the same.
5. A hanger for suspending a slidingdoor on a track-bar comprising a member adapted to engage and travel on the trackbar and having a pendent-bearing normally located under the same, and another member secured to the door and detachably pivoted to the pendent-bearing and provided with an arm having its end located adjacent to the track-bar and having a finger normally extending upward in rear of the same.
6. A Vhanger for suspending a slidingdoor on a track-bar comprising one member adapted to engage and travel on the trackbar and having a pendent-bearing normal-ly located 'under the same, vand another member secured to the door and pivoted to the pendent-bearing and provided with an arm having its end located adjacent to the trackbar and having a finger normally extending upward in rear ofthe same.
7. A hanger for suspending a slidingdoor on a track-bar comprising one member Vadapted to engage and-travel on the trackbar and having a pendent-bearing normally located under the same, and another member secured to the door and detachably pivoted to the pendent-bearing and provided with a finger normal-ly extending upward in rear of the track-bar.
8. A hanger for suspending a slidingdoor on a track-bar comprising one member adapted to engage and travel onthe trackbar and having a pendent-bearing normally located under the same, and another member secured to the door and pivoted to the pendent-bearing and provided with a finger normally extending upward in rear of the track-bar.
