To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB FELBEL, citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Manhattan, city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Type-Writing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates more particularly to the ribbon mechanism of that class of typewriting machines employing a vibratory ribbon carrier or ribbon vibrator which normally maintains the ribbon awayfrorn the printing" oint and is automatically'rnoved or car so to be thrown to bring the ribbon opposite the printing point when the printing keys are operated;

By means of the devices just briefly described I am enabled to control end vary the normal position of the operating lever, ribhon vibrator and therrbbon without chang ing the normal positions of the devices for actuating them, with the result that while the throw or amount of movement of the ribbon vibrator isalways the same, yet the points at which said movement begins and code may be altered so that different widthwise portions of the ribbon may be-presenied to the types.
While I have shown one form of my invention as embodied in a Monarch. machine it is to be understood that the varior s features of said invention in whole or in part may-be adapted to other forms of Writing machines.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of a typewriting machine embodying my invention, parts of the machine being omitted and parts broken away. Fig. 2 is a traginentary sectional view corresponding with Fig. '1 but showing various parts of the rib- I bon mechanism in different relations from those in which they appear in si rig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view of the machine taken on a plane forward of the top plate, parts of the machine being omitted and parts broken away. In the drawings, the base 1 of the machine is surmounted by corner posts 2 which in turn sustain a top plate 3. A front plate 4 extends across the front of the machine and is secured to the front corner posts by screws 5. That portion of the ribbon which extends between the spools passes through and is uidedby a vibratory ribbon carrier or rib on vibrator 49 which is supported and guided on the upright arms 50 of a guide bracket 51, said guide bracket being secured to the. top plate by screws 52. The lower end portion of the vibrator is bifurcated and the arms 53 of the bifurcated portion are curled or bent to receive and hold across pin 54 which works in the slotted forward end of an operating lever 55, the cooperation being such that the vibrator and its operating lever may always be moved freely relatively to each other. In the present instance the operating lever, instead of having a fixed fulcrum as is usual in (he Monarch machine, is fulcrumed on a fulcrum pin 56 which is carried by a fulcrum block, plunger or slide 57, the lattter, as best shown in Fig. 5, being cylindrical in form and being formed with a kerf or slot 57 in which the operating lever is received. The fulcrum block isprovided with an enlargement or head 58 which is received in an opening or depression'59 in a guide member 60, said guide member resembling a socket or a' hollow screw. The guide member is formed with an opening which receives the body ortion of the fulis provided with a slot or kerf 62, for a purpose presently to be explained, and the exbeveled pinion 44 meshing with a 'beveled o crate with a threaded opening in the top 65 driving pinion 45 fixed to a horizontal drivp ate 3, said member being preferably screwed down into said opening until a flange movements of the operating lever.

At either side of the slot 62, the bottom portion of the member 69 is provided with cutaways or notches .65, said notches being oppositely disposed and being adapted to receive the projecting portions of the fulcrum pin 56 when the fulcrum block or plunger 57 is raised in the guide member 60, in a manner presently to be described. The shorter rear arm 66 of the operating lever has its top face 67 preferably-flat. As best shown in l ig. 5, the face 67 normally contacts with the'closed end of the slot-57 at the rear thereof so that bodily longitudinal movement communicated to the fulcrum block will also be communicated to the oper ating lever without affecting the normal relation of the latter and the fulcrum block. Forward of its fulcrum the operating lever is inclined downwardly so that it will not be in contact with the forward part of the closed end of the slot 57 during vibratory The arrangement is such that the fulcrum block serves as a stopffor the rear arm of the operating lever but not for .the forward arm. It does not act as a stop forthe forward end of the lever inorder that there may be no sudden. arrest of and shock .to the finger in the upward or printing movement of the lever. If desired, however, the lever may be stopped in its upward 'throw. I prefer, though, if any such stop he used that it be an adjustable one whereby the throw of the ribbon may be nicely regulated. Such a stop is shown in connection with Fig. 5 and consists of a lip 67 extending laterally from the shorter arm of the operating lever and a screw 67 b arranged in an arm 67 formed on i or attached to one fork of the bifurcated end of the fulcrum block 57.
In operation, when the operating lever is pulled down the lip strikes the point of the screw and limits the upward throw of the lever and the ribbon. 'lhese devices are operable in' both positions of the fulcrum block and the stop screw 67 may be adjusted to regulate the extent of the throw. Thus it will be seen that the upward movements of the ribbon vibrator and its operating lever may be limit ed for each field-of the ribbon so that there may be no overthrow of the ribbon,

Arranged below the fulcrum block 57 is a rock shaft 75, said rock shaft being journaled in arms or lugs 76 (1* ig. 3) depending from the under. side of the top plate, one near the right-hand side of the machine and one near the middle thereof. Of course other projections or lugs on the fulcrum block, but not connected withthe fulcrum pin, might be employed to engage the cam slots if preferred. Arranged between the arms 77 is a curved cam late 82, said cam l plate being provided'wit ears or tabs 83 which are suit ably secured to the inner walls of the arms 77, as by rivets 84. -'lhe curved cam plate 82 is provided with angularly disposed cam slots 85 and 86 which are joined by a dwell 87, forming a continuous opening I which is adapted to receive the upper portion .tof the link 70 below the rear arm 66 of the l operating lever.

constitute a rotary cam member and so port block 65 and the operating lever 55 and also guides the link 70. The rotary member, comprising the arms 77 and plate 82, is adapted to turn with the rock shaft 75 about the axis of said rock shaft as a center, in order to raise and lower the operating lever 55 and vary its relation with the actuating link 70. The de vices for controlling the position of the rotary member comprise a crank arm 88 having a collar portion 89, which is secured by a pin 90 to the rock shaft 75 at the right of the right-hand cam piece or arm 77. The crank arm 88 is pivotally connected at 91 with a push bar or rod 92, the front end portion of which passes through and bears in an opening being provided with a finger button 93. A spring detent '94 is suitably secured, as by a screw 95, to the back of the front plate 4 and cooperates with notches or depressions 96 and 97 to maintain the push bar 92 and through it the rotary member and the parts controlled'thereby in adjusted positions.
Referring now to the operation of the mechanism and assuming that the parts are normally related as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 4, it will be understood that when the universal bar frame is depressed by the printingkeys, it will draw the link 70 longitudinally downward, causing the engaging device or lug 68 to pull doun the rear arm 66 of the operating lever and to swing the forward arm of said lever upward, the latter carrying with it the ribbon vibrator 49. The parts are so proportioned that this upward movement of the vibrator will bring the upper field a of the ribbon opposite the printing It-will be understood that during this actuation of the operating lever the latter Will turn on the fulcrum pin 56 as on an axle, 'sai'd fulcrum in remaining motionless, seated in the dwel s 81 in the arms 77 and contacting with the rear closed ends of said dwells. When pressure on a finger key is removed the parts are restored to normal position by gravity and the usualrestormg springon the universal bar; but if desired the operating lever may have a separate returning spring. As will be apparent,-with the parts. normally related as in Fig. 1, the throw or upward movement of the vibrator will always be the same in extent and will always start from the same point, so that the ribbon will always be raised to the same height and the t e impressions will follow in a path alon t e upper field or portion of the ribbon an longitudinally thereof.

In a ribbon mechanism, the combination of a ribbon operating lever, an actuating link therefor having two engaging fingers, a cam for shifting the lever fr'dm one normal. position to another to change the ribbon field, and a cam for shifting the actuating link and bringin into cooperation with said lever one or t e other of said fingers according to the shift of said lever.

23. 1n a ribbon mechanism, operating means comprising a universal bar, and alink and a lever normally engaging each other and operable 'from said universal bar, said link being constructed and operative to engage With said lever at will at different points in the length of said link.

In a ribbon mechanism for typewriting machines, the combination of a ribbon vibrator, and operating means therefor comprising a link and a lever normally engaging said link being provided with a lot plurality of engaging devices arranged at different points in its length and being operative to engage at will with said operating lever at any one of said different points.

In a ribbon mechanism for typewriting machines, the combination of a ribbon vibrator, operating means therefor comprising an operating lever ivotally connected with the vibrator, and a linknormally engaging with said lever, a key actuated universal bar with which said link is pivotally connected, and means for shifting said link and said lever and causing said link to engage said lever at different distances from the connecting point between said link and said universal bar.

In a ribbon mechanism for typewriting machines, the combination of a ribbon vibrator, operating means therefor cdii prising a link and a lever normally engaging each other, said link being provided with a plurality of engaging devices arranged atdiflerent points in its length, a key actuated universal bar with which said link is pivotally connected, and means for shifting said link and said lever at will and causing one of said engaging devices on said link to be disengaged from said lever and another one to be engaged therewith.

In a ribbon mechanism for typewriting machines, the combination of a ribbon vibrator, an operating lever therefor, a link said link to cause one of its engagingdevices to be disengaged from said operating lever and another to be engaged therewith, said device comprising pivoted cam plates by 1 which the operating lever is supported and shifted and also comprising a cam plate by which said link is shifted.
