Description

T. L. A. HELLWIG.
WINDOW SCREEN. v
APPLIOATION FILED FEB. 2a, 1908.

A T/"OHNE X ;WEN.ESSZE mmwmg v I I Q By THE uunms PETERS co, WASHINGTON, 0' c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THEODORE L. A. HELLWIG, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
WINDOW-SCREEN.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE L. A. HELL- WIG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Screens, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates especially to window screens employed for excluding insects from rooms, and has for its object the provision of a window screen adapted to cover the entire exterior of a window, permitting the opening of either top or bottom sash, or both sashes at the same time, to secure proper ventilation, said screen being so supported by its top rail as to permit sliding away from the window frame When it is desired to clean the outsid of the glass of the window sash.
To attain the desired end, my invention consists in a window screen adapted to cover the entire exterior of a window frame, in which is comprised a frame over which netting is secured, in combination with means for slidably hanging said screen by the top rail; all of Which will be hereinafter first fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is an inside view in elevation of my improved window screen. Fig. 2 is an exterior elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical, sectional view at line aa of Fig. 2.
Similar numerals of reference, wherever they occur, indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
1 is a frame, preferably made of light, strong wood. 2 is a netting secured to said frame.
3 are perforations through the top rail of the frame 1, and 8 are flat metal strips fixed thereover.
4 are eyes for the reception of hooks fixed in the window frame.
5 are handles for holding the screen while Specification of Letters Patent.

being placed in position, in removing the screen, and while moving it on its supporting hooks.
6 is a window frame.
7 are throat hooks screwed into the top of the window frame on the outside.
In placing my improved window screen in position, the hooks 7 are turned horizontally, the screen put out of the window and then brought inward until the hooks pass beneath the metal strips 8, when the said hooks are given a quarter turn, to the position shown in Fig. 8 of the drawing. The screen is then drawn inward against the window frame, and firmly hooked in place. WVhen it is desired to wash the window, the holding hooks are released and the screen pushed outward to the position indicated by the dotted line in Fig. 3 of the drawing, where it is securely held by the throat hooks, making ample room for cleaning the sashes and glass on the outside.
Having now fully described my invention, What I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A window screen for covering the entire exterior of a window, in which is comprised a frame which rests against the outer sashsto when in a closed position, the upper rail of t e frame being cut away to form longitudinal slots, plates secured to the top of said rail over the slots, flush with the top face of the rail, and elongated hooks passing from the horizontal exterior sash-stop through the slots in the screen-frame, the upturned ends of the hooks being located beneath the window cap when all parts are in position, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THEODORE L. A. HELLWIG.
