To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY GRENoN, of the city and county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Holders for Cans and Similar Articles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a art thereof.

This invention re ates to holders for cans, and similar articles, particularly for cans which are being opened by a tool working round the edge.

The apparatus has for its object the production of a holder which may be quickly adjusted to the desired size of can, and which will grip the can firmly from turning.

To this end, the invention consists of a frame adapted to be secured to a table, or similar article. On the frame is rigidly mounted one part of a clamp, the other part of which is movable. The movable clamp is operated by a member by means of a cam or eccentric. The operating member is provided with a series of steps or teeth adapted to engage the movable part of the clamp, so that the latter may be adjusted in its relation to the rigid part.

To this and other ends the invention consists of the several improvements and combinations of parts set forth and claimed hereinafter.

Referring to the drawings for a more partieular description, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a holder embodying my invention in the act of gripping a can, Fig. 2, a similar view when the holder is not enga ing a can, Fig. 3, a top view of the holder w en in the osition shown in Fig. 1, Fig. 4, a longitudina central vertical section of the holder when in the position shown in Fig. 2, Fig. 5, a bottom view of the movable part of the clamp, and Fig. 6, a top view of the sockets by means of which the holder is secured to the table, or other article.

In all figures, similar letters of reference represent like parts.

The part designated by the letter A in the drawings is intended to re resent the top of a table, or similar article, "or supporting the holder. At one edge is secured a plate B having one or more sockets C into which depelrilding lugs D of the holder are adapted to ta e.

The holder consists of a frame having two parallel bars E terminating in a cross piece F,

with teeth G, which forms the rigid or immovable portion of the clamp. At the other end of the holder is a cross piece H through which is adapted to roject a movable ratchet bar I, having teeth One end of the ratchet bar I is reduced to form a cylindrical bar K adapted to project through the cross piece F at t e end of the holder. A coiled spring L bears against the cross piece F and the shoulder M on the ratchet bar I so as to clam the holder and bar in the position shown in igs. 2 and 4.

The holder is provided with two parallel projections N, between which is pivoted a handle 0, provided with a clamp or eccentric P adapted to bear against the end B of the ratchet bar I. When the handle 0 is swung into the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the eccentric P forces the ratchet bar I to the left against the tension of spring L. When, however, the handle 0 is swung to the position shown in Figs. 2 and 4, the bar is released and is forced toward the right by the spring L.

Loosely mounted on the ratchet bar I is a movable part S of the clamp, having teeth T. This movable part S of the clamp is provided with a shoulder U adapted to engage the teeth J of the ratchet bar I, while below the ratchet bar is a cross piece W of the clamp adapted to hold it from being removed from the ratchet bar I.

The operation of the device is as follows: When it is desired to hold a can or similar article against movement, the can X is placed on the holder in substantially the position shown in Fig. 1, so that it bears against the teeth G of the stationary portion F of the clamp. The movable portion S of the clamp is then moved up near the opposite side of the can, and its shoulder U will engage one of the teeth J of the ratchet bar I. The handle O is then swung on its pivot to substantially the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3, when the cam or eccentric P will push the ratchet bar I to the left against the tension of spring L. This movement makes the teeth T of the movable portion S of the clamp engage the cam on the opposite side of the teeth G of the rigid portion of the clamp. The can is therefore held between the two parts F and S of the clamp. To release the can it is merely necessary to swing the handle O to the position shown in Figs. 2 and 4 when the spring L will force the ratchet to the right, and the can will be released from the engagement of the movable part S of the clamp.

Having now described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A holder for cans and similar articles, the combination with a frame; of a ratchet bar movably mounted on said frame; a clamp, one part of which is rigidly secured to said frame, and another part loosely mounted on said ratchet bar, and adapted to be engaged thereby; a spring normally holding said bar in one position; and means for moving said bar against the tension of said sprin substantially as described.

2. In a holder for cans and similar articles, the combination with a frame; of a ratchet bar movably mounted on said frame; a

" clamp having one part rigidly secured to said frame and another part loosely mounted on said ratchet bar and adapted to be engaged thereby; a spring normally holding said bar in one position; and a lever handle having a cam adapted to bear against said bar to move it against the tension of said spring, substantially as described.

3. In a holder for cans and similar articles, the combination with a frame having parallel bars; of a art of the clamp secured to one end of sai bars; a ratchet bar movable longitudinally between said bars, the other part of said clamp being loosely mounted on said bar and adapted to be engaged thereby; a spring normally holding said bar in one position and means for moving said bar against the tension of said spring, substantially as described.
