UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE H. BARNUM, OF GOLDFIELD, NEVADA.
TRUNK-ROPE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. BARNUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Goldfield, county of Esmeralda, and State of Nevada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trunk-Ropes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to trunk ropes.
The present invention has for its object the provision of a trunk rope of novel arrangement, which on being applied. to a trunk of any of the usual sizes and tightened, will automatically adjust itself around the sides, ends and top and bottom of the trunk and lash it in. an improved manner.
The invention contemplates the provision of a main or ring-rope, straining ropes, and a double hitch or strap tightening means, all arranged in a novel manner, as fully set forth hereinafter and recited in the appended claims.
The invention is shown in the accompanying drawings as applied to a trunk which is illustrated in dotted lines.
The ring or main rope 1 is intended to be disposed under the trunk, the latter, which is shown by dotted lines 2, being first placed thereon. This ring-rope has knots 3 and 4 at its ends which slip loosely through one of the loops of one of the straining ropes, permitting its size to be reduced by taking it up when intended for use on a smaller trunk than the one shown, but it could be made in a single continuous piece if desired.
The straining ropes are in two sets, for the respective end parts of the trunk, each set consisting of side ropes 5 which have loops '6 capable of slipping on the ring-rope, and an end straining rope 7 also having a slip loop 8. The side ropes 5 are made in one piece, the intermediate part of which is connected to a buckle 9 in one instance and to a metal loop 10 in the other instance.
A strap 10 has one end 10 connected to the loop 10, thence passes around the cross bar 9 of the buckle 9, back and throu h the loop 10, thence around another cross ar 9' and is engaged by the tongue 9, this arrangement providing a double purchase and insuring great strength and stability of the tightening means thus provided. The end Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 8, 1908.
Patented Dec. 15, 1908.
Serial No. 409,764.
ropes pass loosely through the center parts 11 of shackles 12 which have eyes 13, through which the side ropes loosely pass. The ends of the end ropes are provided with knots 14 to prevent them from pulling out of the shackles. The trunk is placed on the ringrope and the side ropes 5 are then brought up over the front and rear sides of the trunk, while the end ropes 7 pass up over the ends of the trunk. The strap is then passed through the buckle and all of the straining ropes adjust themselves automatically and evenly, their loops slipping on the ring-rope. A trunk can be roped or unroped very readily with this device.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a trunk rope, the combination with a ring-rope, of straining ropes having a slip connection to the ring-rope and adapted. for connection together.
2. A trunk rope comprising a ring-rope and sets of straining ropes for the respective end parts of the trunk which are attached to the ring-rope by slip connection and adapted for connection together.
3. A trunk rope comprising a ring-rope and sets of straining ropes for the respective end parts of the trunk which are attached to the ring-rope by slip connection and adapted for connection together, said sets of straining ropes comprising side ropes to go around the sides of the trunk and end ropes to go around the ends of the trunk.
4. A trunk rope comprising end straining ropes and side straining ropes connected together where they will lie under the trunk, slip connections to which the end straining ropes are attached where they will lie above the trunk and to which the side straining ropes have an adjustable connection, and means for drawing said adjustable parts of the side straining ropes toward each other to tighten them.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afIiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE H. BARNUM.
