Description

c. J. SPRUCB @a P. H. DBKNATEL. GARMENT HANGER. APPLICATION FILED NOV. 6, 1907.

w/T/vsfs v i UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLIFFORD J. SPRUCE AND FREDERICK H. DEKNATEL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNORS TO THE MACKIE-LOVEJ OY MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A COR- PORATION OF ILLINOIS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
GARMlENT-HANGER.
Application led November 6, 1907. Serial No. 400,942.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that we, CLIFFORD J. SPRUOE and FREDERICK H. DEKNATEL, citizens of the UnitedStates, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain Vnew and useful Improvements in Garment-Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
The object of our invention is to produce a hanger for coats or other garments formed of a minimum number of parts, such parts being of a simple form, and capable of being folded into compact form when the article is not in use.
In the drawings-Figure l is a view of our improved hanger in open or operative position. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view, partly in section, showing the connection of the central member and the side members. Fig. 8 shows the device folded up. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view showing a slight modification.
Our improved hanger comprises three parts only, a central member designated generally by the numeral l and side arms 2, 2. These parts are preferably formed of stiff wire bent to the proper shape, but other material may be used if found desirable. The upper portion takes the form of a hook 3, which is provided for the purpose of suspending the hanger. In the form of the invention illustrated in Fig. l, we have also shown a lower hook 4 from which a garment can be suspended beneath and inside of a garment supported by the side arms 2. Near its lower end the central member l is deflected in the form of a U-shaped bend 5 having an upper member 6 and a lower member 7 disposed at substantially a right angle to the axis of the main portion of said central member l.
` Each of the side arms comprises a large loop 8 designed to support a garment, and the ends of the wire forming the side arms are bent to form small loops 9. The small loops 9 surround one of the members of the U-shaped bend 5 of the central part 1. In the present instance we have shown the loops 9 surrounding the upper member 6 of the U-shaped bend. The end portions of the wire forming the side arm 2 engages, in the present instance, the lower member 7 of the U-shaped bend 5 when the arms 2 are opened to operative position, thus retaining said arms securely in proper relation to the cen tral part l. rPhe form of the device shown in Fig. 4 is identical with that above described with the exception of the omission of the lower hook 4, in place of which the lower end of the central part l is bent up, as shown at 10, into proximity with the upper member of the U-shaped bend.
rIhe construction illustrated and described comprises only three parts each of very simple form, and so assembled as to readily permit the entire structure to be folded into compact shape or opened to and securely held in operative position.
From the foregoing description, it will be apparent that we have provided means whereby the suspending hook is firmly held in upright position when the garment supporting arms are opened to operating position.
As will be apparent by reference to Fig. l, the central member l is held against movement to either the right or left by means of the engagement therewith of the co-acting parts of the side arms 2, and downward pressure upon the side arms due to the weight of a suspended garment only serves to increase the firmness with which the central suspending hook is held in place.
We claim:
l. In a garment hanger a central member consisting of wire bent to form a suspending hook at one end and having a U-shaped bend comprising an upper pivot member and a lower stop member, wire U-shaped support ing arms, the ends of said U-shaped arms passing first above said pivot member and being then bent around and beneath the same, the free ends of said U-shaped arms lying on the side of said stop member toward said U-shaped arm.
2. In a garment hanger a central member consisting of Wire bent to form a suspending lying on the side of said stop member toL hook at each end and 11a-ving a U-shaped Ward said U-sha'ped arm.
bend comprising an upper pivot member and CLIFFORD J SPRUCE :i lower stop member Wire U-shaped support- Y ing arms, the endso` said U-shaped arms l FREDERICK H' DEKNATEL' I Vitnesses:
passing first above said pivot member and being then bent around and beneath the l CARL HANSEN, same, the free ends of said U-shaped arms 1 N. P. EMOND.
