Application flledAugust 8, 1966: -Serial No. 329,679.'-
T all whom it may concern:
Be. 1t knownthat I, FREDERICK J. RADLER, a citizen of the l,United States, and a resident of lJersey City, inthe county of Hud` son and State-of New Jersey, haveinvente'd a new andImproved Hose-Nozzle, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description;
This invention relates to improvements in water-hose nozzles, and 'its connections are particularly adapted for use with hose on fire water-towers, stand-pi es and the like, the object being to providb a nozzle with connections whereby it may. be readily turned'in various directions, the connections being -so constructed that no leakage can occur at the joint.
I will describe a hose nozzle embodying my invention and then point out the novel' features in the appended claim.
Reference is to b had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this speci-4 fication, in. which similar characters of reference mdicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 -is a side elevation of .a hose noz-- zle and its connections, embodyin `my invent 1on;.Fig. 2 is a plan thereof; 'g. 3 is a sectlon on the line of Fig. 2; Fig. 4
is a section on the line yf-y ofFig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the nozzle attached to a barrel 2 having rotary movement in a casing 3. The said casing 3 has cylindrical body with a slot 4 which extends circumferentially, and through which the nozzle 1 passes, the slot of course, permitting the nozzle to be swung circumferentially of the casing. The barrel 2 has an 'inlet slot 5 through which water passes to the nozzle and to permit the water to pass freely through said slot as said nozzle is in any of the suggested positions, the casin at one side is depressed to form a cham er 6 which projects laterally from the cylinderof the case, as shown. Seated in the channels formed in the'wall of the casing adjacent to said chamber, are packing strips 7 which will prevent leaking of water between the barrel and casin The barrel extends practically the full ength of the casing and removably engaging with the endsV ofthe casing are caps 8, which cover the heads of the barrel; and packing material 9 is laced in the caps to engage snugly against the ends of the barrel,.thus preventing leakage at these points; The casing 3 has screw-thread 'connection with a' hose coupling consistingof a short tubularV neck 10,with the outer end of which a ring 11 removably connects as here shown, the connection being made by screw-threads; and
on this ring vllfis an annular flange 12 for engaging in the channel 13 formed in the mner side of la collar 15, and withthis col' In the drawings I :have shown the invention as attached to a water-tower or ladder 18, which of course, is to be supported on the usual truck. As a means for attaching the device to the ladder, a frame or arm 19 is secured to a rung of the ladder as here shown, by' means of clips 20, and on this frame or arm is a ring 21 which surrounds the tube .10 between the annular shoulder 22 on said tube and-the end of the interiorly threaded section 23 on the casing 3. A rod 24 extends upward from the frame or arm 19 through a frame or arm 25 attached to a rung of the ladder, and on the upper end of this rod 24 is a pulley 26, over which halyards 27 pass, the saidhalyards lbein attached to lugs 28 on opposlte sides o the nozzle, land the said halyards may extend down to the ground so thatA the nozzle may be turned from such a point; that is, by pulling on one of the halyards the nozzle may be pulled into different positions. By pulling upon both halyards the nozzle may be move with relation to the casing 3, or circumferentially thereof. On the frame or arm 25 are spring ngers 29 designed to receive and hold the nozzle, when not in use, as clearly indicated by dotted lines in Fig.
1 and full lines in Fig. 2.. lOf course when the casing carrying the nozzle is turned laterally, the turning will take place between the ring 11 and the collar 15, and such turning in connection with the movements of the nozzle relatively to the casing as before mentioned, makes practically a universal joint connection between the nozzle and a hose. f It will befbserved that the two packing strips- 7 are.disposed substantially diametrically opposite to each other in the wall of the case; the slot 4 extends around on one side of the case, its ends being disposed near the packing strips; the water chamber 6 is formed on the op osite side of the case; the upper side of this chamber extends nearly claim as new,
`to the upper packing stri while the lower Fig. 3, the upper edge of the inlet slot 5 is substantially 1n alinementwith the upper.
wall of the water chamber; in the other extreme position of the nozzle the lower edge ofthe slot 5 is substantially in alinement withv the.1ower edge of the water chamber. From this arrangement it will be seen that I obtain a great range of movement for the nozzle.
Having thus described my invention I and desire to secure by Letters Patent: y
In combination, a case having a cylindrical body and an enlar ed water chamber formed on the side thereo a tubular neck communi- -eating with said water chamber and adapted vto lead water thereto, said body having a circumferential slot in the wall thereof o lposite said 'water chamber, a barrel rotatab y mounted in said cylindrical body, a nozzle attached to said barrel and projecting through said slot., said barrel having an opening in 'the wall thereof oplkalosite said In testimony whereof: I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
