To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB CLovE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pendleton, Umatilla county, Oregon, have in: vented a new and useful Automatic Leveling Combined Harvester, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings as constituting a part thereof.

The latter are held' against-shift ing longitudinally on their shaft g by set grooves made on saidshaft. A detail of this arrangement is shown in Fig. 5. By observing the latter, it willbe seen that the shaft g is made with splines g at its ends, on which are slidably mounted the friction gears r, 1', having bevel rims adapted to engage with the hollow faces of the friction gears s, s, when moved into contact with the latter by theo eration of the/pivoted yoke, t. It will also e noted that the movement of'o'ne of the friction gears r, r into contact with its mnltaneously move the otherfgear (1' or 1") out of suchcontact. Theshaft g has an extension (1 on which is rigidly mounted a' sprocket-gear g, operatively connected by a sprocket-chain g (of which a part only is shown) with some convenient, sprocket-gear (not shown) on the projecting end of one of the driven shafts of the harvesting-mechanism. Thus the jointed connections between the wheel-frames and the housing frame of the machine cause the wheelframes to follow the movement of the former,
.or in other words, cause the wheel-frames to be moved up and down in correspondence with the movement of the housing frame, due to a transverse inclineof the ground over which the harvester is being operated.
Supposing now the shaft g to be continuously driven during the operation of my harvester, it will be apparent that so long as the harvester travels over substantially .level ground, there will be no eifect, but as soon as the harvester begins to travel over ground sloping to some degree, the pendulum will assume a relative position, thereby operating the yoke t, so as to bring one or the other of the friction gears r, 1" into operative contact with one of the corresponding friction gears s, 8; upon which the power of the shaft will be transmitted through the bevel-gears q,
l to the gear p, driving the latter during the period of time that the pendulum remains out of plumb; and thus driving the shaft 0, and thereby the pinion 0, which, meshing with the arched rack-bar 'n, will move the housing-frame relatively to the incline of the body-frame due to a transverse slo e of the ground, and thereby maintain the ousingframe in substantially vertical position notwithstanding said slope of the ground. It is further ap arent that after the housingframe has een moved relatively to the incline of the ground, and the latter again begins to return to a more horizontal plane, the pendulum will make a relative movement and in so doing operate the described devices, and thereby cause a corresponding movement of the housing-frame. And as a result of the described action, the body or housing of my machine inclosin the harvesting devices will maintain a suhstantially vertical position throughout the operation of my mac inc, and. the bearings of its operating parts relieved of any undue strain;

To restrain the lower end of the pendulum in case of a forward or rearward dip of my machine, while in action, I provide'a pair of transverse guide rods w between which the pendulum swings. To increase the arc of motion of the housing-frame the corners x, x thereofare beveled.
I-claim:
1. In a combined harvester, the combination of a body-frame, Wheel-supports pivoted to the lateral ends thereof, a housingframe pivoted to the body-frame, intermediate of the wheel-supports, a transversely oscillating member and means thereby controlled adapted to move said. housing-frame relatively to the transverse incline of the body-frame, so as to maintain said housingframe in perpendicular position, and movable connections between said housingframe and the wheel-supports, adapted to cause the latterto follow said relative movement of the housing-frame.
2. In a combined harvester, the combination of a body-frame, wheel-supports pivoted to the lateral ends thereof, a housingframe pivoted to the b'odyframe, intermediate of the wheel-supports, a transversely oscillatin pendulum and means thereby controlle adapted to move said housingframe relatively to the transverse incline of the body-frame, so as to maintain said housing-frame in perpendicular position, and movable connections between said housingframe and the wheel-supports adapted to cause the latter to follow said relative movement of the ,housing-frame.
3. In a combined harvester, the combination of a body-frame, wheel-supports pivoted to the lateral ends thereof, a housing-frame pivoted to the body-frame, intermediate of the wheel-supports, a transversely oscillating pendulum and means thereby controlled adapted to move said housing-frame relatively to the transverse incline of the body-frame, so as to maintain said housingframe in perpendicular position, vertical circle segments aflixed to tneexterior of the housing-frame, and movable connections between said circle segments and the wheelframes, adapted to cause the latter to follow said relative movement of the housingframe.
4. In a combined harvester, the combination of a body-frame, Wheel-frames pivoted to the lateral ends thereof, a housing-frame pivoted to the body-frame, intermediate of the wheel-frames, a transverse arched bar, affixed to the lateral ends of the body-frame and a pinion thereon, meshing with said cogs of the arched bar, a driven shaft, means, including clutching elements and a transversely oscillating pendulum, the latter arranged to control such clutching elements, wherebythe power of said driven shaft is i and the housing-frame is moved relatively l to-the transverse incline of the body-frame, and maintained in perpendicular position, and movable connect ons between said housing-frame and the Wheel-frames adapted to cause the latter to follow said relative movement of the housing-frame.
5. 7. A combined harvester, comprisin a body-frame, wheel-frames pivoted to the ateral ends thereof, a housing-frame ivoted to the body-frame, intermediate of t e wheelframes, a transverse arched bar consisting of two concentric members, a plurality of'radially disposed cog-like rods in the upper part of said arched bar, a revoluble shaft, and a pinion thereon, meshing with said coglike rods, a driven shaft, means, including clutching elements and a transversely oscillating pendulum, the latter arranged to control such clutching elements, whereby the power of said driven shaft is transmitted to drive said revoluble shaft, and the housingframe is moved relatively to the transverse incline of the body-frame, and maintained in perpendicular position, vertical circle segments affixed to the exterior of the housingframe, and movable connections between said circle segments and the wheel-frames adapted to cause the latter to follow said relative movement of the housing-frame.
8. A combined harvester, comprising a body-frame, wheel-frames pivoted to the lateral ends thereof, a housing-frame ivoted to the body-frame, intermediate of t e wheelframes, a transverse arched bar aflixed to the lateral ends of the body-frame, and provided with cogs, a vertical shaft and a inion thereon, meshing with said cogs, a beveled gear on said vertical shaft, a horizontal driven shaft, clutching elements horizontally movable on the ends of said horizontal shaft, a pivoted yoke, and a pendulum controlling the same, the former arranged to move said clutching elements into and out of operative position, a pair of beveled pinions loosely mounted on said horizontal shaft, intermediate of and provided respectively with parts adapted to be engaged by said clutching elements, when the latter, are moved into contact therewith by the swing of said, pendulum, vertical circle segments affixed to the exterior of the housing frame, and movable connections between said circle segments and the wheel-frames adapted to cause the latter to follow thehousing-frame in its movement relative to the transverse incline of the bodyframe.

A combinedharvester, comprising a body-frame, wheelframes pivoted to the lateral ends thereof, a housing-frame pivoted to the body-frame, intermediate of the wheel-frames, a transverse arched bar affixed to the lateral ends of the body-frame, and provided with cogs, a vertical shaft and a pinion thereon, meshing with said cogs, a beveled gear on said vertical shaft, a horizontal driven shaft, clutching elements horizontally movable on the ends of said horizontal shaft, a pivoted yoke, and a pendulum controlling the same, the former arranged to move said clutching elements into and out of operative position, guide bars restraining the oscillating pendulum to a transverse path, a pair of beveled pinions loosely mounted on said horizontal shaft, intermediate of and provided respectively with parts adapted to be en aged by said clutching elements, when the atter are moved into contact therewith by the swing of said pendulum, vertical circle segverse incline of the body-frame.

A combined harvester, com rising a body-frame, wheel-frames pivote to the lateral ends thereof, a housing-frame pivoted to the bodyframe, intermediate of the wheel-frames, the'bottom transverse ends of the housing-frame being beveled for the purpose specified, a transverse arched bar affixed to the lateral ends of the body-frame, and provided with cogs, a vertical shaft and a pinion thereon, meshing with said cogs, a beveled gear on said vertical shaft, a horizontal driven shaft, clutching elements horiengaged horizontal shaft, intermediate of and provided res ectively with parts ada'pted tobe by said clutching elements, when the latter are moved into contact therewith by the swing of, said pendulum, vertical circle segments affixed to the exterior of the housing-frame, and movable connections between said circle segments and the wheelframes adapted to cause the latter to follow. the housing-frame in its movement relative to the transverse incline of the body-frame.
