Specification of Letters Patent.

To alt 'whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, MILTON SCHNAIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Disinfecting Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to improvements in apparatus for disinfecting and fumigating, and the same has for its object more particularly to provide a simple, eflicient and readily transportable apparatus by means of which large volumes of dense gaseous or vaporous disinfecting fluids may be quickly generated or produced, and thence conducted, under pressure, from said apparatus to and into the room, chamber or `receptacle to be disinfected or containing the matter to be disinfected, and there liberated.
A further object of said invention is to provide means whereby a dry gaseous disinfecting fluid and a moist, vaporous disinfecting fluid, may be produced or generated either simultaneously or each one separately and independently of the other.
A further objectof lsaid invention is to provide means for introducing air into said apparatus, and heating the said air without necessitating or causing the mixing of said heated air with smoke, gases or other products of combustion.
To the accomplishment of these ends my invention consists in the novel details of construction, and in the combination, connection and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and 'then pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like numerals Vof reference indicate like parts,- Figures 1 and 2 combined form a central, longitudinal section taken on the line 1-1 of Fig. 4, illustrating an apparatus made according to and embodying my invention; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a top view of the apparatus with the storage receptacle at its left-hand end removed, and Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the entire apparatus, on a reduced scale.
In said drawings 10 designates the apparatus as a whole comprising a base 11 supported in a slightly elevated position upon legs 12, 12. At the left-hand end of base 11 is arranged a platform 13 which is bolted to the upper ends of standards 14, 14 extending from the base 11, and provided with a centrally located circular recess 15, adapted to receive the bottom of a cylindrical receptacle 16, whose upper portion is held duly in position by an annular band 17 supported near the upper portion of said cylindrical receptacle 16 by rods 18 extending from the platform 13.
19 denotes a lid which is removably secured to said receptacle 16 by bolts 20, and provided with a screw-threaded aperture 21, and a plurality of air vents 22 arranged around said aperture and a screw plug 23 having a projecting flange, which plug and flange are adapted to seal said aperture and said air ports or vents. Below said platform 13, and arranged transversely of the base 11 is bolted a blower 24, and to the rear of said blower 24 is bolted an electric motor 25 of any suitable construction, to the projecting end of whose shaft 26 the fan i wheel of the blower 24 is directly connected.
27 denotes an air supply pipe disposed below the base 1l which extends through said base and connected at one end to the blower 24, while its other end extends through said base 11 adjacent to its opposite end, and communicates with the vaporizing portion of 'the apparatus. 28 denotes a valve arranged in said pipe 27 intermediate the blower and vaporizing portion aforesaid.
The vaporizing portion of the apparatus is arranged at the right-hand end of the base 11,.
(see Fig. 2) and consists of an outer cylindrical casing or receptacle 29 bolted at its lower edge to the base 11, and provided at its upper end with a top 30, bolted thereto, having a neck 31 projecting from the upper surface of said top 30 provided with a detachable cover 32 which is bolted to said neck 31. 33 denotes a gasket or packing interposed between said cover 32, and the edge of said neck 31.
The casing or receptacle 29 is divided about midway of its height by a horizontal partition 34, thereby forming two independent air- tight compartments 35, 36, with the lower of which compartments 36, the air pipe 27 leading from the blower 24 communicates.
Within the upper compartment 35 is disposed a fumigating receptacle 37 inclosed by a steam jacket 38, which is connected with a source of steam supply by a pipe 39 provided with a valve 39 extending through the top 30, and connected to said steam jacket 33 within the compartment 35.
40 denotes a bushing arranged in the bottom of the fumigating receptacle through which extends a pipe or ue 41 whose upper end extends upwardly within said receptacle almost to the top thereof and is provided with a deflecting hood 42, while the lower end of said pipe or flue 41 projects beyond the bottom of said receptacle 37 and through an aperture in the partition 34 below which it is secured by a nut 43.
ln the center of the cover 32 is arranged a discharge or outlet pipe 44 having a valve 45 for controlling the passage of the generated or produced gases and vapors therethrough. The upper end of said outlet pipe 44 is screw-threaded and adapted to receive one end of a hose or other flexible pipe by means of which the fumigating or disinfecting agents may be conducted to the receptacle or chamber to be disinfected. To one side of said outlet pipe 44 is arranged a thermometer 45X the upper end of which is inclosed in a suitable housing and holder whereby the thermometer may be secured in position in the cover 32 and its lower end and bulk permitted to extend downwardly into tie fumigating receptacle 37 and 46 denotes a filling pipe provided with a valve 47, and also secured in said cover 32, which pipe 46 extends downwardly into the receptacle, while its upper end is adapted for connection with one end of a pipe 77, provided with a check valve 7 8, and connected at its other end with a pump 79 secured to the supply receptacle 16 at the aperture 21.
From the bottom of the fumigating receptacle 37 extends a drain pipe 48 which passes through the steam jacket 38, partition 34 and outer casing 29, and has its end connected to the horizontal member of a T- joint 49 to the lower end of whose vertical member is secured a valve 50, and outlet 51, and to the upper end of the vertical member of said T-joint 49 is secured a fluid gageglass 52 provided at its upper end with a pet-cock 53.
Hthin the lower compartment 36 of the casing 29 is centrally arranged an inner substantially circular casing or receptacle 54 open at its top and having a forwardly projecting portion 55 extending to the inner surface of the outer casing 29 and secured thereto, and provided with an opening 56 which registers with a similar aperture in the outer casing 29, and 57 denotes a door frame secured upon the outer surface of said casing 29 about the opening 56, and provided with a hinged door 58 having fastening screws 58X, the sides and rear of said receptacle 54 being supported by stays or braces 59. Within said receptacle 5 4 is disposed an electric heating apparatus or stove 60 having an open receptacle or vaporizing pan 61 arranged thereon, and 62 denotes a conical-shaped deflecting hood provided at itsrapex with an aperture 63, said hood 62 being suspended in position a short distance above said pan 61 by stays or straps 64 secured thereto and the underside of the partition 34.
n the space intermediate the inner wallA of the casing 29 and the receptacle 54 which forms an annular receptacle or cell are a plurality of superposed steam coils or pipes 65 which are connected at their ends to the vertical headers 66, 67. From the header 66 extends a pipe 68 which passes through the partition 34 and is connected to the steam jacket 38 surrounding the fumigating receptacle 37, and from the lower end of the header' 67 extends a pipe 69 which passes through the base 11, and has its end connected to the vhorizontal member of a T- joint 70, to the lower end of whose vertical member is secured a drain pipe 7l provided with a valve 72, and to the upper end of the vertical member of said T-joint 70 and the lower end of a joint 7 2X are secured the ends of a gage-glass 73. 74 denotes a steam pipe leading from the upper end of said gage-glass 73, and passing thence through the casing 29, into the inner receptacle 54, between the upper edge of the pan 61 and its cover 62 and having an upwardly bent end 75 terminating within the aperture 63 of the hood 62. The said pipe 74 is provided with a valve 76-above the gage glass 73 whereby the passage of steam through said pipe may be controlled.
8O denotes an attaching plug whereby the conductor S2 leading to the electric stove 60, and a second conductor not shown leading to the motor 25 may be connected with a source of electric supply.
The operation of the apparatus is as follows: After closing the valve 45 in the outlet 44, valve 50 in the drain pipe 4S, and valve 72 in the condensation pipe 71, the valve 47 of the pipe 46, and the pet-cock 53 of the gage-glass 52 should then be opened and a solution of'formaldehyde transferred from the storage receptacle 16 by the pump or other suitable means to the pipe 46 and the fumigating receptacle 37 filled to the extent desired which may be determined by reference to the gage-glass 52. As soon as the requisite amount'of solution has been introduced into said receptacle 37, the valve 47 and pet-cock 53 should be closed, and hereupon the valve 39X of the steam supply pipe 39 opened and steam permitted to circulate in and through the steam acket 3S, and steam coils 65 in the compartment 36, andas soon as the solution in the receptacle 37 has been sufficiently heated to vaporiZe the same and roduce the gas, (which may be determined y reference to the thermometer 45X) the valve `28 in the air pipe 27 leading from the blower 24 to the compartment 36 should be opened, and the blower 24 set in operation. Hereupon air will be forced into the compartment 36 through the space intermediate its inner wall and the outer wall of the receptacle 54 and cause the air to become heated in its passage by impinging upon and contacting with the steam coils or pipes 65, 65 and the heated surfaces of the apparatus contiguous thereto, and expanded in consequence of such heating. Thereupon the air is forced from said compartment 36 through the flue 41 into the fumigating receptacle 37 and there caused or permitted to mix with the vapor and gas produced therein and be thence forced from said receptacle 37 through the outlet 44, and the pipe or hose connected thereto to the receptacle or chamber to be disinfected.
vVhen it is desired to produce a greater volume of more dense and more penetrating gas than it is possible to obtain from a solution of formaldehyde which is usually about 40 per cent., I place, in addition to the solution in the receptacle 37, a quantity of pure polymerized formaldehyde or tablets in the pan 61 land thence vaporize the same by the heat developed by the electric heater or stove 60. At the same time that the heater or stove 60 is put in operation the valve 76 of the steam pipe 74 may be opened and a jet of steam permitted to issue from its upturned end 7 5 and cause the same to create a partial vacuum in the hood 62 and draw up the gas liberated or produced in the pan 61 to mix with said steam and force the same into and through the flue 41 and receptacle 37 where the same may mingle with the aqueous gas generated in said receptacle, and the entire volume of gas, vapor and heated air then forced through the outlet 44, and the conducting pipe connected thereto,
, and discharged therefrom into the chamber or receptacle to be disinfected.
Any condensation of steam occurring in the jacket 88, the coils 65 and connected pipes whichcondensation will be indicated at the gage-glass 73, may be drained off by opening the valve 72.
Any fluid or residue remaining in the receptacle 37 after the operation of disinfecting has been completed may then be drained off by means of the pipe 48 and valve 50.
Without limiting myself to the details of construction which may be varied within the scope of the invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is zl. A disinfecting apparatus comprising a closed casing, a plurality of communicating receptacles therein adapted to receive fumigating agents, separate means for heating each of said receptacles to vaporize the fumigating agents therein, means for introducing air into the casing, means independent of the heating means aforesaid for heating said air, and means for conducting the heated air and produced fluids from said receptacles, substantially as specified.
2. A disinfecting apparatus comprising a closed casing, a plurality of compartments therein, a receptacle arranged in each of said compartments adapted to receive fumigating agents, separate heating means for each of said receptacles to vaporize the fumigating agents therein, means for introducing air into one of said compartments, a receptacle in said last-named compartment, a heating apparatus disposed adjacent to said receptacle, and means for conducting theiair over said receptacle and through one of the receptaclesadapted to receive t-he fumigating agent and discharging the said air together with the produced iiuids from the apparatus, substantially as specilied.
3. A disinfecting apparatus comprising a closed casing, a partition dividing said casing into an upper and a lower compartment, a sealed receptacle arranged within the upper compartment having a valved inlet and outlet, a steam jacket inclosing said sealed receptacle,a flue arranged within said sealed receptacle and extending through the partition, an open receptacle arranged in the lower compartment of the casing, a heater for said open receptacle, a blower and a pipe extending from said blower to the lower compartment of the casing, substantially as specified.

A disinfecting apparatus comprising a closed casing, a partitionA dividing said casing into an upper and a lower compartment, a sealed receptacle arranged in the upper compartment having valved inlet and outlets, a steam jacket inclosing said sealed receptacle and communicating with a source of steam supply, `a flue arranged in said sealed receptacle and extending through the partition aforesaid, a detlector arranged upon the upper end of said flue, a receptacle arranged in said lower compartment, a ra-A diator disposed about said receptacle and communicating with the steam jacket inclosing the sealed receptacle aforesaid, a heater within said receptacle, a pan arranged upon said heater, a deflector arranged above said pan, a blower, means for operating the same, and a pipe extending from said blower to the lower compartment of the casing, substantially as specified.

A disinfecting apparatus comprising a closed casing, a partition dividing said casing into an upper and a lower compartment, a receptacle arranged within said upper compartment and projecting above the top thereof, a cover arranged upon the projecting upper end of said receptacle and provided with a valved inlet and outlet, a steam j aeket inelosing said receptacle, a pipe eonn 'neoting said j-aeket with a source of steam supply, a valve in said pipe, an outlet pipe extending from said receptacle and provided with a valve and gage-glass, a flue arranged in the base of said receptacle having its upper end extending into said receptacle and provided with a defleetor, and its lower end extending through the partition aforesaid and into the lower Compartment of the oasing, a receptacle supported in said lower compartment free from the walls and base thereof, an opening in said easing communicating with said receptacle, a door for said opening, a radiator in said compartment substantially surrounding said receptacle therein and Connected to the steam jacket of the receptacle in the upper Compartment, a
