Lena-s Paten; No. 90,591, daad May 25, 1869.
INIPROVEMENT IN -.APPARATUS FOR MOULDING PIPE.'
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same..
To alli/whom t may coneern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK Serenna, of St.V Louis, in the county of St. Louis, and State of Missouri, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Moulding Pipe, and for similar purposes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and true description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
For the purpose of forming an improved mould for casting pipes, columns, and similar cylindrical bodies, the nature of this invention is in supporting the pattern-frame and flasks, or moulds in a vertical position, upon hinges, in such Wise that the relative position of the parts shall be determined by said hinged adjustment, to insure accuracy of `joint and fit in the iinished mould; secondly, to permit the operator to prop- Aerly ram the sand about projecting flanges, or bell-ends Y 'lhe nature hereof is in the arrangement of the flask, or pattern, with exterior openings, to allow the intro' duction of llammers.
To enable those herein skilled to make and use my said improved device in moulding pipe, or similar bodies, I will now more fully describe the same, and the application thereof, referring to .I *igurelv as a plan view, with certain parts re-Inoved to'develop others underlying; to
Figure 2 as an elevational frpnt view; to
Figure 3 as a horizontal sectional elevation at (the bell-end ofthe frame, say) the line a: y of fig. 2; to
Figure .4 'as a vertical sectional elevation ofy the hinged support for the flask and frame.
I arrange a pit, in which the moulds are operated. Said pit is surrounded by the wall A, to which are secured, by a strong cast-iron frame, the pivot-bearings 13,l1alviug a pioper rest, B,v upon which the Weight of the moulding-devices is taken. v
Connecting with the pivots B, and resting upon the shoulders B', I arrange the exterior' case, or liask O O', divided into equal parts, 'C and C', each connected by separate loops, c and c, respectively, to and wit-h the pivots B. When the flask G C is thus hung, and rests with its parts openedwide, then the inner pattern-frame D is connected, by its hinges d, with the pivot B.
` In the frame Dare arranged the patterns E, conforming, by their outer surface, accurately to the interior of the casting to be produced, and the juxtaposition of the parts O CandE is then to be such, that when the parts are properlyrin contact, the semiannular space between the pattern and ask shall be sufficient to admit the proper quantity of mouldingsand.
For this purpose, the ask C G will be' swung to meet the radial ribs F F', the joint being made a close fit, and secured by proper clamps f.
The gate, or runner G will be left at the ribs F F', and as said ribs accurately terminate the semi-cylindrical space of cach half ask C C', when the sand is rammed in the mould thus formed, it will form edges along the ribs F F', which, when the half flasks are joined, will actually fit tocomplete the cylinder ofthe mould, as required. v
In order to preserve the edges of the sand at the ribs F F', I have arranged to withdraw the patterns E from the sand, and for this purpose the shaft H is secured in proper bearings in the frame D.
Upon said shaft are the cams h, operating (by suit able straps) the cam-rods I, which attach directly to the patterns E. V
By turning the shaft H by a hand-crank, (or other means,) the patterns E are receded, and thus leave the sand in the half flasks, a true impression of the outer surface of the-pattern E.
As it is advantageous to cast gas and water-pipe Withthe swelled bill-ends down, I arrange the flask C in such wise, that the operator may ram the end from without. v
For this' purpose, the ask O G'has,'at its base, the openings c?, in* such position, that the operator may introduce and ram the sand about the projecting end of the pattern E. A l
A proper cover, c", is then placed to close the openings cz, and held down by keys ci, or any other suitaf ble devices.
The exterior mould being completed, and the pattern E having been receded by the Voperation of the shaft H, the clamps f are released, and the flasks C G are swung back, to disengage from the patternsE. The pattern-frame D is then lifted off the pivot B,by
suitable derrick, or lifting-devices, and may'be at once used in a second flask, inthe manner hereinbefore described.
The moulds in the flasks are then blackened or 3. The'fiask C C', arranged with4 openings cz, forramming the sand-about bell-ends, and similar projectious, substantially as set forth.
I`n witnessy of said invention, I have hereunto set my hand, in the presence of'- FREDERICK SHIOKLE.
Witnesses l GnonenP. HERTHEL, Je, WILILIAM W. Hnn'rnnn.
