Description

.l. ROBERTS.
Carriage Step and Fender. No. 90,584. Patented May 25, 1869.
4 0435 W I I etaa JOHN ROBERTS, or
CINCINNATI, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 90,584, dated May 25, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEP-COVERS AND WHEEL-FENDERS FOR CARRIAGES,
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To whom c't may concern Be it known that I, J OHN Ronnn'rs, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Combined Step-Cover and Wheel-Fender; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, making part of this speeification.
This invention relates to a cheap and simple device for keeping the steps of carriages clean, and also for preventing the clothes of persons from coming in contact with the rear wheels, on entering and leaving the carriage. I
Figure l is a perspective view of a carriage-door and step, provided with my improvement, the door being closed, and
Figure 2 is a side view of the same, the door being open. 7
A represents a portion of a carriage-body.
B, its door.
C, a portion of the rear left wheel.
I) is the step on that side, the same being preferably of the kind known as a box-step, that is, having wings d d, and hangers E E ET.
The step has a gum or leather covering, F, whose front edge may serve as a cushion, or anti-rattler, to the step-cover, in its closed condition.
The step-cover and wheel-fender G consists of a piece or pieces of sheet-steel, or other flexible material, of the form represented, the same being attached at its upper edge by bolts 'H, or equivalent devices.
The outer side of the cover and fender G has two guards or cushions, I and J, of gum or leather, or other elastic material, which guards impinge against the wheel when the door is opened, and prevent the marring of the surface of the door and fender by contact with the wheel, and also act as anti-rattlers.
I have described the preferred form of my improvement, but may vary the same in some particulars; for example, the cover and fender G may be fastened to the under side of the door, by a block of wood or iron, or in any other preferred manner, and a single guardor cushion may be employed.
I claim herein as new, and of my invention- The combined arrangement of the flexible fender G, attached and strengthened at its upper end, the guards or cushions I J, and step D E E, all constructed to operate as and for the purposes set-forth.
In testimony of which invention, I hereunto set In hand.
