FOOT-REST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 1, 1908.
Application led. September 28, 1908. Serial No. 455,108.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. RossMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bloomington, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foot-Rests, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to foot-rests, and it has particular'reference to an improved adjustable foot-rest adapted to be used in connection with steam and hot-water radiators and` with other heating apparatus of a like nature, although the use of the ilnproved foot-rest is by no means limited or confined in this respect.
The invention has for its objects to provide a foot-rest which may be easily `and quickly applied in position for operation upon a support, such as would be afforded by the pipes of a radiator of ordinary conventional construction; a further object is to provide for the adjustability of the footrest; a further object is to construct a footrest including a supporting member which may be readily mounted in position upon the pipes of a radiator and upon which the foot-rest proper mal)I be detachably mounted so as to be capab e of being removed and set out of the way when not in actual use; the supporting member being unobtrusive and not unsightly or otherwise objectionable when left in position upon the radiator.
Still further objects of the invention are to simplify and improve the construction of this class of devices.
With these and other ends in view, which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention; it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the invention may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawings-Figure 1 1s a erspective view showing the improved oot-rest mounted upon a radiator in position for operation. vF 1g. 2 1s a perspectlve view of one of the supporting members, detached;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the brackets and a portion of the foot-rest, detached. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken through one of the brackets and supporting members. Fig. 5 is a lhorizontal sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 5-5, in Fig. 4:. Fig. 6 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 6 6, in Fig. 4. Fig. 7 is a sectional detail view taken on the plane indicated by the line 7-7 in Fig. Al.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of references. The improved device in its preferred form includes two supporting members 5, 5, each consisting of an elongated body provided at its upper and lower ends with heads or enlargements 6, 7, which are approximately V-shape in horizontal section, being tapered or Wedge-shaped in a rearward direction so as to be capable of abutting upon proximate pipes, as 8, 8, of a radiator of conventional construction, a specimen of which has been shown at R in the drawings. The upper head 6 is provided in its upper end thereof with a recess or socket 9, which is preferably of the triangular shape indicated in the drawings; the lower head 7 is provided in the front side thereof with a recess or socket 10, which is preferably of square or rectangular outline. The body of the supportmg member 5 is provided intermediate its ends with an aperture l1, for the passage of a securing member suchas a bolt 12, which extends rearward between the radiator pipes and is provided with a nut 13 enga ing a cross-piece 14, which latter is fitted a jacent to the rear sides of the radiator pipes and is preferably provided with a recess 15 affording a seat for the nut; it will be readily seen by tightening the bolt, the supporting member 5, will be forced in a rearward direction between the pipes of the radiator which will be engaged by the tapering wedgeshaped heads at their upper and lower ends of said supporting member, which latter will thus be securely retained in position owing to the friction between the heads and the pipes. The improved foot-rest device ordinarily calls for the use of two of the supporting members herein described, the same being mounted upon the radiator a suitable distance apart.
The supporting members 5, 5, serve to support a pair of brackets B, B, which may consist of light ornamental castings provided at their upper ends with rearward projecting arms 16, having downward projecting triangular lugs 17, adapted to enter into the recess 9, in the upper heads of the supporting members. These lugs 17, it will be observed, are slightly reduced or rounded at their front corners as indicated at 17a so as to permit them to readily engage the recesses 9 without danger of binding. Near their lower ends, the brackets B are provided with rearward extending lugs 18, adapted to enter into sockets or recesses 10 in the front sides of the lower heads of the supporting members. Said lower heads may be provided with vertical apertures 19, intersecting the sockets 10, Yfor the passage of keys 20; the lugs 18 being provided with grooves 21, forming seats for the reception of said keys: these keys, however, would not be absolutely indispensable inasmuch as the brackets would be retained in position upon the supporting members by gravity, but as a matter of security the use of the keys is preferred.
The brackets B, B, are preferably formed with ornamental slots or apertures QQ and they are provided adjacent to their upper ends with inclined lugs or ribs 23, having apertures Q4, for the passage of bolts 25 equipped with nuts 26, which are accommodated in the slots Q2. The twobrackets B, B, serve as direct supports for the footrest which has been shown as consisting of a strip 26 of suitable length, seated upon the ribs 23, and provided at its edges with downturned flanges 27, engaging the ends of the ribs; said strip 26 being provided with slots 28, affording seats for the heads of the bolts 25, wlereby it is adjustably mounted upon the brackets.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood. The supporting members 5, may be readily mounted in position upon a steam or hotwater radiator of conventional construction, and said supporting members, being practically concealed between the pipes of the radiator, may be permitted at all times to remain in position. The brackets B, B, may be very readily mounted upon the supporting members by simply placing the lugs 17, 18, in engagement with the sockets or recesses 9, 10, and by the insertion of the keys 20, the said brackets will be retained very securely in position. The foot-rest member 26, is finally placed in position upon the brackets; the slots 28, enabling said member to be readily adjusted in the proper and the desired position. It is evident that the height of the foot rest may be regulated by raising or lowering the supporting members 5, 5.
The improved device affords a very l convenient and comfortable means of support for the feet'of a person seated in front of the radiator. Vhen it is not desired to use the foot-rest, the member 26 and the brackets B, B, are very easily and quickly detached and stored behind the radiator or in'some out-of-the-way position; the supporting members 5, 5, being permitted to remain in position upon the radiator as long as may be desired.
As hereinbefore stated, the use of the improved device is not confined to connection with radiators, but it may be utilized in any position that may be found convenient and desirable. It is simple, inexpensive, easily applied and thoroughly efficient for the purpose for which it is provided.
