and State of New York, have inventedicer tain' new and useful Improvements in Fire-'- Extinguishers, of which therfollowin'g is a specification.
My invention relates to fire extinguishers and more particularly to means for positively tilting the acid bottle to spill its contents into the gas generating compound in the fire extinguisher receptacle.
In the accompanying drawings which show one of the forms which my invention may take, Figure 1, is a side elevatlon of my device applied to the tilting bottle of a chemical engine the tank of which is broken away; Fig. 2, is the same showing the device operated to tilt the bottle; and Fig. 3, is a side elevation partly in section of the tilting device itself with part of-the cap through which it projects broken away.
Describing now my invention with special reference to the devices illustrated and reserving it to the claims to point out the novel features, 1 is intended to represent in section the tank of a chemical engine but may be substituted by the container of any. other fire extinguisher, for example that of the wellknown portable kind. No attempt has been made to show the various pipe and other connections to complete the chemical engine, these being superfluous and no part of my present invention.
A flanged cap 2 with internal screwthreads 3 and provided with operating handles l4, is adapted to screw-connect with the externally threaded neck 5 of the tank 1. Depending from this cap is a frame 6 between the sides of which an acid bottle 7 of any ordinary type is supported on pivots 8, located preferably as shown below the center of gravity of the bottle to make it unstable in upright position.
A vertically adjustable stopper 9 is provided in any well known manner to removably seal the mouth of the bottle. This is accomplished in the device shown by operating the handle 10 on stem 11 which pro:.

strike-the bottle and positively throw it out of its upright position. Inv the actual construction shown, this plunger 14 passesthrougha hole incap 2 and through a stuifing box 15' to prevent leakage through said hole in. thercap=about the-plunger.
The head 16 of the plunger is preferably rounded on the top to adapt it to the hand in striking it and between said head and the stufling box the plunger is surrounded with a spiral spring 17 acting to hold the plunger normally in elevated non-striking positlon relative to the bottle.
The plunger is located on the cap 2 preferably as shown at a point mid-way between the pivot-bearing arms of the bottle supporting frame 6. ,Also preferably at a point where the end of the plunger will strike the corner of the bottle. For this purpose the striking end of the plunger is preferably provided with a head 18 having inclined sides. As a further assurance that the plunger when depressed will properly strike the bottle to throw it out of upright position, I preferably provide an inclined strip 19, secured to the bottle and inclining from its mouth downwardly to its shoulder and located at a point where it will be struck when the plunger is depressed. WVith this inclined strip or part 19 provided, it is practically immaterial where the hole is made in the cap to receive the plunger 14, provided it is somewhere on a radial line over the strip. In other words said strip makes absolutely accurate positioning of the plunger on the cap unnecessary and therefore facilitates manufacture. Moreover the strip itself being on an incline makes the upsetting action of the plunger all the more positive and effective.
The stufiing box 15 through which the plunger passes may be of any usual construction and in the device shown, consists of a hollow nut 20, having an externally screw-threaded shank 21 which engages corresponding internal threads in the plunger opening through cap 2. This shank has a bore through it just large enough to snugly receive the plunger. The cavity in the hollow nut 20 is provided at the bottom with packing material 22 surrounding the plunger. Above the packing material said nut 20 is internally screw-threaded to receive the threaded shank of the gland 23. Tightening up the gland, compresses the packing in obvious manner to any desired degree.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
. 1. In combination with the tilting-bottle of a fire-extinguisher, a plunger disconnected from said bottle, projecting through the Wall of the extinguisher, and adapted to be brought into tilting contact with the bottle.
2. In combination with the tilting-bottle of a fire-extinguisher, a plunger disconnected from said bottle, projecting through the wall of the extinguisher to come in tilting contact with the bottle when the plunger is depressed; and means adapted to hold the plunger normally in elevated position.
3. In combination with the tilting-bottle of a lire-extinguisher, a part on said bottle inclining in a direction from the mouth of the bottle to its shoulder, and a reciprocating plunger projecting through the wall of the extinguisher to contact with said inclined part on the bottle, when the plunger is depressed.
4:. In combination with the tilting-bottle of a fire-extinguisher, a reciprocating plunger disconnected from the bottle, projecting through the wall of the extinguisher and having an inclined head within the extinguisher adapted to come in tilting contact with the bottle when the plunger is depressed, and means adapted to retain the plunger normally in elevated position.
