To a/ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be itknown that I, GEORGE C. HuTcHINGs, of the city of St. Louis, Stateof Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Extinguishers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof'.
This invention relates to tire-extinguishers; y
and it consists of the novel construction,
combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter shown, described, and claimed.
Figure 1 is a view, partly in elevation and partly :insection, of my improved fire-extinguisher. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section of the acid-bottle, cap, and bottle-holder, taken approximately on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 isa side elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 2 and showing a modified form of spring. Referring by numerals to the drawings, the main tank consists of the hollow cylinder 5, closed at its bottom and having the iiange 6 projecting outwardly from its upper end. The upper end oi' the tank is'closed by the concavo-conveX plate 7 having the flange 8 projecting outwardly from its edge, said flange 8 being secured to the flange 6 by means of rivets. An exteriorly-screw-threaded annular flange 9 projects upwardly from the center of the plate 7, and the cap 10 is screwseated upon said ange. There is a vertical opening in the center of the cap 10, in which the hard-rubber tube 11 is secured, and the sliding bolt 12 operates through said tube 11. A head 13 isformed upon the upper end of the bolt `12 for operating the bolt, anda circular plate 1/1 is rigidly fixed upon the lower end of the bolt 12. A packing-ring 15 is placed around the bolt 12 below the cap 10 and above the plate 14. Apacking-ring 16 is placed within the cap 10 and engages the upper edge of the iiange 9 to form a close joint between the cap and the tank. The arms 17 and 18have pins formed upon their upper ends, and said pins are inserted 'through the cap 10 in alinernent with'the bolt 12 and upon opposite sides of the bolt and securely riveted in position. The ring 19 is formed integral with the lower ends of the arms 17 and 18. An annular interiorly-screw-threaded ange 20 extends downwardly from the edge of the plate 14.
The acid-bottle 21 is screw-threaded on its closed end and screw-seated in the flange 20.
A disk 22,of fraugible material, suchas mica,
is placed in position to close the mouth of the bottle, and the cap 23 is screw-seated upon the neck of the bottle, as required to hold the disk 22 in position. An opening 24 is formed through the cap 23, said opening being in alinement with and substantially the same size as the passage through the neck of the bottle. L-shaped slots 25 are formed from the lower edge of the ring 19. A ring 26 fits within the ring 19, and pins 27 project outwardly from the ring 26 and operate in the slots 25, as required to form a bayonetjoint connection between the ring 26 and the ring 19; Arms 2,7 project downwardly from the ring 26, and a perforated plate 28 is atA tached to or formed integral with the lower ends of said arms 27 A hollow cylindrical lug 29 projects upwardly from the center of the plate 2S in alinernent with the openings through the cap 23 and the neck of the bottle, said lug being of such a size that it will readily pass through said opening, and teeth 30 project upwardly from said lug. An eX- pansive coil-spring 31 is placed above the plate 28 and around the neck of the bottle, as required to hold the bottle normally elevated.
When it is desired to fill the bottle with acid, the pins 27 are disengaged from the slots 25 and the plate 28 removed. Then the bottle is removed from its connection with the sliding bolt 12 and filled and then replaced. When it is desired to discharge the fire-eX tinguisher, a blow or suitable pressure is applied to the head 13, thus forcing the bottle downwardly and bringing the frangible seal into engagement with the teeth 30 and breaking the seal.
In the modification shown in Fig. 3 the coil-spring 31 is placed around' the bolt 12, between the head 13 and the cap 10, instead of being placed around the neck of the bottle. Otherwise the construction is the same.

By locating the plug 1l of non-corrodible material in the cap the push-rod 12 will not become rusted in said cap and will always remain free to operate through said cap.
I claim- 1. In a tire-extinguisher, a receptacle, a cap closing said receptacle, a vertically-apertured non-corrodible bearing located in the center of said cap, the push-rod 12 operating through said bearing, the plate 14 carried by the lower end of said rod, the compressible packing-ring 15 passing around said rod and located between the plate and the non-cor rodible bearing, the screw-threaded fiange 2O carried by said plate, an inverted sealed acidbottle seated in said liange, and an expansive coil-spring for normally retaining the acid-- ,packing-ring l5 passing around said rod and located between the plate and the non-corrodible bearing, the screw-threaded flange carried by said. plate,an inverted sealed acidbottle seated in said ange, the arms 18 depending from the under side ot' the cap, a cage removably carried by the lower ends of said arms, the hollow cylindrical lug 29 projecting upwardly from the center of the bottom of the cage, the teeth 30 formed in the upper edge of said lug, and an expansive coil-spring 31 interposed between the bottom of said cage and the shoulder of the inverted acid-bottle, substantially as specified.
