Be it known that I, HARRY E. CHIPMAN, a citizen of the United Statearesiding at ew Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Cormecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Molds for Casting Wheels; and I do hereby declare u when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be afull, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in'

This invention relates to an improvement in molds for casting Wheels, and while articularly adapted for casting trolley wheels, is applicable for casting similar devices.
The object of the invention is to form the molds from metal so that they can be used over and over again without being destroyed as in the case of sand molds; and the invention consists in the construction and combination of parts as will be hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In carrying out my invention as herein shown, I employ a bed 2 having trunnion bearings 3 mounted upon or formed integral with it. Also mounted on the base is a brace 4tand a stop 5 for the purpose as will hereinafter appear. The part of the mold corresponding to the bottom mold, but which, for convenience, I will refer to as the back mold 6, is provided on its lower edge with perforated arms 7 adapting it to be mounted upon a shaft 8 passing through the trunnions 3. The front mold 9 is similar in form and has correspdnding perforated arms 10 by which it is also mounted upon the shaft 8 and so as to rock thereon. The back mold is adapted to rest against the brace 4 and so as to stand in an inclined pofipecifieation of Letters Patent.

In the center of the face of the front mold 9 is a correspending recess 14 to receive a die 15 which is held in place by screws 16.
Secured to the upper and lower edges of the mold 6 are strips 17 and 18 forming guide ways for slides 19 and 20, the edges of these slides having-tongues 21 to engage with the strips 17 and 18. The center of the inner edges of the slides 19 and 20 are formed with semicircular ribs 21 which form the groove in the edge of the trolley wheel 22. Through ,the'center of the dies 12 and 15 and through the molds 6 and 9 is a tapered opening 23 through which a core pin may pass to form the central opening through the trolley wheel. In the upper edge of the die is a pouring hole 24. As a convenient means for moving the slides line with the rack 25 I arrange gears 26 which are mounted on shafts 27 which extend up through the top of the mold and which are provided with hand wheels 28 by which they may be turnedand so that by turning the hand wheels the slides 19 and 20 will'be moved into or out of position. As a convenient means for locking the molds together I provide one of them with a hook 29, and the other with a stud or pin 30 with ing to the size of the wheel to be cast having been placed in their respective molds, and suitable slides 19 having been turned into position with relation thereto so as to form a mold forthe wheel, the mold 9 is raised and hooked to the mold 6. Metal may then be oured into the mold and the wheel forms When the casting is sufficiently cooled the molds are unlocked and the front mold turned down against the stop 5 which forms a rest for it. The hand wheels 28 are then turned to force the slides 19and 2O outward, leaving the casting free to be removed from the mold 6.. I' thus provide simple metal molds for casting trolley or, other wheels having grooved edges.

A 'mold for casting trolley wheels comprising a bed, trunnion bearings extendmg upward therefrom, a= shaft extending through said trunnions, a back and front mold, said molds having perforated arms at their lower edges through which said shaftpasses, said molds formed with recesses in their inner faces, dies mounted in said recesses, slides adapted to be moved transversely on the face of the back mold, said slides providednear their lower edges with racks, pinions mounted in said mold for engagement with said racks, vertical shafts on which said pinions are mounted, said shafts projecting above the upper edge of the back mold, and hand wheels secured "to the upper ends of said shafts, substantially as described.
