To all whom it may concern.- Be it known that I, GEORGE CASE CHER- BONNIER, a citizen of the United States, ie
siding at Ferguson, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Door-Operatin Mechanism, of which the following is a %u tion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accom-- panying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a top plan View of a portion of acar provided with a door-operating mechanism constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view'of one of the door-supporting devices and the bracket on the door to' which said device is connected; and Fig. 4 is a detail view showing the tooth on the winding shaft which is adapted to engage a 006p crating tooth onthe door-supporting device to move it into an inoperative position.
This invention relates to door operating mechanisms for dump cars, and has for its object to provide a mechanism of the char.- acter described that is of simple construction and which will remove the strain from the door-operating chain when the door is in its closed position.
Referring to the drawings which illustrate the preferred form ofmy lnvention, 1 designates a hinged door that closes an opening 1n the bottom of a car, and 2 designates a rotatable winding shaft to which the dooroperatin chains 3 are fastened. The door is provi ed at its front edge with members that rest on the winding shaft 2 when the door is closed so as to remove the strain from the winding chains, said members consisting of devices 4 ivotally connected to brackets 5 on the un erneath side of the door, as shown in Fig. 2. The devices 4 are preferably formed from cast metal and each base shoulder or bearing surface 4 that is adapted to rest upon a collar 6 onjthe winding shaft 2 when the door is closed. A housing 7 projects laterally from one side of the device 4 to receive an eye-bolt 8, to which the windin chain 3 is c0nnected,'as shown in dotted ines in Fig. 2, and the top wall of sa d housing is curved upwardly at 9 to form I a guide for the chain, said upwardly curved portion 9 also operating to prevent the de:

The device 4 is provided at its rear side with a laterally projecting flan e 10 and one of the depending ears 11 on t e bracket 5 is provided with a laterally proljecting lug 12 that cotiperates with thefiange I 10 on the device 4 and thus forms a stop that limits the swinging movement of the device .4 outwardly or toward the shaft 2, the lug '12 on'the bracket being strengthened by a ,rib 13 formed integral with the car 11 of the bracket.

device 4 and swings it away from the winding shaft 2 when said shaft is moved in the direction for'permitting the door to swing downwardly It should be understood, however, that various other means could be employed for swinging the device 4 away from :thewinding shaft without departing, from the spirit of my invention. For example, the. sleeve 6 on the winding shaft could be provided with a ratchet that engaged the device 4 and moved it away from the Shaft, or the sleeve 6 and the device 4 could be rovided with cooperatin roughened suraces that would causesai device to swing away from the shaft when the shaft was rotated. I
The operation of the device is as follows: The winding shaft 2-is rotated to cause the chains 3 to be wound onto same and thus move the door into its closed position and when said door arrives in its closed position the devices 4 on the door enga'ge the collars 6 on the winding shaft and thus remove the strain from the chains 3.
The lugs 12 on the brackets limit-the outward movement of the devices 4 toward the winding shaft while the door is. being raised and the upwardly curved portions 9 on the housings 7 bear against the chains 3- as the door is moving into its closed position and cause the devices 4 to swing rearwardly away from the winding shaft as said devices 4 approach the shaft, thus pre-- venting the devlces 4 from catching or becoming wedged underneath the winding shaft. Thebearin face 4* on each ofv the devices 4 is preferably formed on,the arc of a circle, the center of which is the pivot that connects said device to the bracket 5. The
advantage of providing the device 4 with a curved bearing face 4; of this form is that said device can occupy various positions relatively to the collar 6 on the windinshaft and still retain the door in its closed position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let- 1. In a dooroperating, mechanism, a hinged door, a rotatable shaft, a device pivotallv connected to the underneath side of the oor adjacent its front edge and depending downwardly from said door, and a flexible member connected to the shaft and to said device, said device being so'formed that it rests upon the shaft when the door is closed and thus transmits the Weight which the door carries directly to said shaft which lies in a lower horizontal lane than the door; substantially as described.
2.,In a dooroperating mechanism, a hinged door, a rotatable shaft, a flexible member connected to said door and shaft for moving the door into its closed )osition, a bracket on the underneath side of the door, a device pivotally connected to said bracket and adapted to rest upon said shaft when the door is closed, and cooperating means on said device and bracket for limiting the movement of said device in one direction; substantially as described.
3. In a door operating mechanism, a hinged door, a rotatable shaft, a flexible member connected to said door and shaft for moving the door into its closed osition,"a bracket on the underneath side of the door, a device pivotally connected to said bracket and adapted to rest upon said shaft when the door is closed, cooperating means on said device and bracket for limiting the movement of said device in one direction, a tooth projecting laterally from one side of said device, and a 006 crating tooth. on the shaft which is adapte to engage the tooth on said seams device and move the device out of engagement with the shaft when it is rotated in one direction; substantially as described.
4:. In a door-operating mechanism, a
hinged door, a rotatable shaft, a bracket connected 'to the underneath side of'said door,
a device pivotally connected to said bracket and provided with a laterally projecting housing having its top wall curved up- Wardly, a chain secured to the shaft and to the housing on said device, said device having a bearing face which rests on the shaft when the door is closed, a flange on the rear side of said device, and a lug on the bracket which coiiperatcs with the flange on said device and limits its swinging movement in one direction; substantially as described.
5. A door-operating mechanism comprising a winding shaft, a hinged door, a device pivotally connected to the door and adapted to rest uponthe winding shaft when the door is in its closed osition, a flexible member connected to sai shaft and to the pivotally mounted device on the door to raise said door, and means on said device which bears against said flexible member so as to prevent said device from wedging under neath the shaft when the door is being raised; substantially as described.
- (3. A door-operating mechanism comprising a winding shaft, a hinged door having a device pivotally connected thereto which is adapted to rest on said shaft when the door is closed, a flexible member connected to said shaft and to the device on the door, and an upwardly curved flange on said device which bears against said flexible member when the door is moving into its closed position; substantially as described.
7. Ina door-operating mechanism, a hinged 'door, means for raising said door, and a pivotally mounted device arranged on the underneath side of said door and providedwith a curved bearing face that rests on a support when the door is closed, said curved bearin face being concentric with the pivot of said device so that the doorwill remain in its closed position whenever any portion of said curved bearjn face rests on the support; substantially as escribed.
