STATES DUMPING-WAGON.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 9,050, dated June 22, 1852.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM V. CRoss, of the city of Washington and District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dumpingagons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the wagon the body slightly run back), resting upon the framing, the adjustable lever bar or incline depressed. Fig. 2 is a view of the wagon, the body tilted or dumped, exhibiting more distinctly the adjustable lever bar or incline, and friction rollers.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in each of the figures.
The nature of my invention consists in so arranging a wagon as to adapt itto the ordinary purposes of road use, and by a mechanical device enable the person having it in charge to readily discharge the load by dumping, the body by its own weight causing it to sink on an adjustable lever or in cline plane, simply arranged and not liable to the objections and difficulties of complex contrivances.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A in both figures represent the body of the wagon, constructed with suitable sills or bottom rails G G. A cross piece H placed at the front of the body unites the rails; (when the wagon is in use, and until it is to be dumped) the sills or rails rest on the ends of the front bolster E; F is the hind axle and bolster, B the perch or coupling, C, C, side rails of the framing united to the bolsters and extending beyond the front bolster; D a cross piece unit-ing the side framing, and intended as a support for the point of the screw 0; I, I, are rollers inserted in the upper and rear edge of the hind bolsterand upon which the sills G G of the body at all times rest: I is a roller placed in the crosspiece H of the body and is intended to support the body when the adjustable lever bar or incline K is raised by the screw 0; L L are two strong elbow plates of metal placed on each side of the bar K and united thereto with rivets or bolts, they support between them a screw nut N suspended by projecting arms formed on the sides of the nut, said arms pass through the upper part of L L thus giving the nut play when the screw raises the lever bar or incline.
In the use of my invention, the body of the wagon rests upon the ends of the bolsters, the screw having been sufficiently turned to permit the lever bar K to sink and leave the roller I; after the load is received and drawn to the desired place, the driver simply by turning the screw 0 brings its bearing on a plate on the cross piece I) and elevates the front end of the adjustable bar or incline K and with it the front of the body sufliciently high to clear the pins P, P, from the front bblster and produce a slight incline plane of the bar K: the friction roller I is brought in play and the load descends the plane by its own weight requiring the slightest assistance, the friction rollers I, I, on the rear bolster, facilitating its descent; attached to the sills of the body are projecting stubs or pins, which striking against hooks united to the hind bolster and axle, arrests its further descent, and tilts up and delivers the load; the screw is then partially withdrawn the lever bar descends and the body is run upon the rollers to its place, when another turn of the screw relieves the roller I and the sills G, G, rest on the front bolster.
The adaptation of this wagon to take the place, and as a substitute for carts in hauling heavy articles as brick, coal, &c., will be apparent, the same number of horses being able to draw a larger quantity, and at the same time dispensing with half the drivers: its simplicity admitting of ready repair may also be adduced.
What I claim as my invention and desire .to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of the adjustable bar or incline K, and screw 0, in combination with the rollers I and I, I, all operating in the manner substantially, as shown and set forth in the foregoing specification and accompanying drawings.
