IMPRO'VED WASHINGMACHINE.

This invention relates to improvements in washingmachines, and consists in the arrangement of a pair of `vibrating wash-boards operating in conjunction, the

one having a surface corrugatedhorizontally and vertically, andthe other composed of vertical bars arranged at suitable distances apart, the spaces between coinciding with the vertical lines of protuberances on the first-mentioned board.

Figure 2 represents a plan View of the same.

A represents the case, preferably of rectangular form in the horizontal plane, but having bottom inclined with respect to the horizontal line.

IB represents a wash-board, corrugated vertically and horizontally, supported in an edgewise position transversely of the case, and connected to a sliding frame, O, resting on the bottom of the case, and deriving motion from the crank-shaft D.

E represents a wash-board composed of bars F, arranged side by side at regular intervals, and sup ported at each end by the rails Gr. The said board is pivoted iu the axis of the upper rail G, by the `ends thereof, to the sides of the case, on which pivots it is oscillated by a conuectingrod, also operated by the -main shaft.

The vertical lines of protuberances of the board B are coincident with the spaces between the bars F of l i thus, in conjunction with'the latter, cause the clothes to change position by an intermittent rotary motion.

The two boards4 are so arranged as to have a mov'ement in one direction, in unison, 01 nearly so, while in the other direction the movement of the board E is more rapid than the other, moving away from it, and taking against the clothes in a new position when starting into the first-mentioned movement, in unsonwith the board B. c

,'By pivoting the boardE at its upper endand connectingit with the crank-shaft D at the same point, it is enabled to oscillate for the purpose of moving the clothes, and become stationary when the squeezingoperation is performed.

I am aware that hinged or pivoted squeezers have heretofore been operated from a double-crank shaft, but in all cases the oscillating squeez'er has been hinged` at its lower end to the suds-box, and its upper end attached' to the connecting-rod from the crank-shaft; both s queezers, therefore, move from and toward each other uniformly.

Having thus described my invention,

I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Pattenty The board E, when pivoted at its upper end, and connected to the crank-shaft D at the same point, by means of the pitman H, in combination with the board B, also connected. to the crank-shaft D, all operating as described, for the purpose specilied.
