OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A QORPORTION OF WEST VIRGINIA.
To all it may concern:
Beit known that I, RUSSELL Horn, a cititroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have' invented certain new and useful Improvements inv Oil-Pumps, of which the ,fol-v lowing is a speciication.
' 'l'he present invention relates to improvements in oil pumps, especially adapted for use with motor vehicles, and will be described `in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a vertical;v sectional view through a pump constructed in accordance with the present invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are, respectively, transverse `sections through one of the pump barrels and the connecting 'f rod between the pump plungers and driving.
' shaft. Fig. 4.is a plan vview partly in section.

tetex-ruig to the drawings, 1 deslgnates the body ot' the pump within which are formedj two barrels or chambers 2, each communicating with supply ducts 3 and discharge ducts' it, said ducts communicating through valve controlled passages withcouplings 5, 6,-for supply'and feed pipes. A
The shaft 7 is mounted in suitable bearings inthe pump body 1, and provided at one end with a worm wheel 8 which engages a suitable worm 9 On a lshaft 10 gearedlto the driving or propelling mechanism ofthe vehicle in the ordinary manner.`
The plungers 11 extend above the body l, and the upper portion oi eaclris externally threaded as at'12 and provided With a longitudinalv slot 13. .Into said slots 13 in the the shait7.' The pin 14 is preferably pro-- vided with van'intermediate section 17 -polygf f onal in cross section, which tits `in a correL spondmgly shaped passage inthe rod 15,'
and said pin and rod are connected by a key or Cotter pin 18.v The connecting rod l15 is guided and held fromv lateral motion toward either plunger 1l, by Walls of the slot in the body l through which it moves and the end et the eccentric pin 16 bears, against a smooth surface termed on said body.' The length of Speccation of LettersiPatent. Application led March 23, 1907. Serial 110.664,142.

)usted position by a 'clampingbolt 20 which -is screwed therein and provided at its. inner-l end with a tapering portion 21 adapted to fit the correspondingly tapered seaty formed at the upper ,end of the plunger, -whereby when said pinis screwed into the sleeve and caused to bear against said `seat the upper end of the plunger is held in' 'close engagement with the sleeve 19. Said sleeves 19 are guided by suitable passages in a cap or cove'r 22 detachably connected with vthe pump body 1,V as by screws. f
should be provided-With a stuiiing box at the upperendof the pump barrel, even if the parts-are madewith. the greatest care and accuracy. By the resent invention ,such stuiiing'box is provi ed by a gland 23 screwed into the u per end of the ump barrel, and said glanc is held secure y in pla-ee by the engagement between inwardly ex- 22v-and the ro'ecting head or end of the gland. Pre era ly saidv projecting header end 25 is' made polygonal in cross section, andthe projections 24. are so posltloned that said head is engaged on opposite sides,
whereby it is e'eetually held from turninfr i when the cap 22 is Vin position on the body vThe valves lcontrolling the passage of, oil to .and from the pump barrels have. been speciallyl designed in order to prevent any leakage. A'sshown7 the valves eachv com It has 'been found that pumps fof 'this type the slot 13 is readily varied -by adjizsting'a tendingprojeetions 24 on the cap or cover `prise a ball 26 held against a suitable seat f by a spring 27.A The seat is made in the such as lead, are arranged betweentheinner ends ofthe vvalve seats 'and the.. pum' body, between the .lock nuts 29 and said bo y, and
vbetween the vplugs 30 and the outer ends oit the valveseats. This construction positively prevents any leakage of oil backward around :the balle `2G, or leakage at. any other pointl abontf the valiel The ope `ation ot the pump will be readily understoodironi the foregoing description. [t will be seen that by connecting' the rod 15 with the pump plungers through the pin 14:
which delaeliably connected with said rod i it is poseible to readily remove either pninp plungerl 'from the pump without disconnect ing the other, or if desired the .rod 15 may be removed withoutA aii'eetiug,r either of the plungere., The friction of the worin gear `holde` theeccentric pin 16 against the i'iiaehined face of the body l; but to preventy 1. ln an oil pump, the combination of ai;
