STEPHEN F. ,HAMBLETON, OF SYOAMORE, KANSAS.
COMBINED PLUMB AND LEVEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 17, 1908.
Application filed January 4, 1908. Serial No. $093M.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN F. HAMBLE- row, a citizen of United States, residing at Sycamore, in the county of Montgomery,
State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Plumb and Level; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has relation to a combined plumb and level that is useful wherever a plumb and level may be employed, and particularly in building, bridge, and similar constructive work.
It is the object of the invention to provide such improvements in devices of the kind mentioned as will enhance their durability,
efficiency and general usefulness.
The invention is embodied in the device illustrated in the annexed drawings, forming a part of this specification, in view of which it will first be described in detail and then pointed out in the appended claim.
Of the said drawings: Figure 1 is a face view of my invention, shown as boxed in. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a face view of one member of the frame.
Fig. 4 is a similar view of the dial, rim and outer frame. Fig. 5 is a side View of the indicator, showing the manner of formation of the same.
In the drawings, 1 designates the body or casing of the combined plumb and level, and
Between said frame members is disposed the indicator 8 which swings on a pivot-bolt 9, extending through the center of the body frame and through the indicator itself. The bolt 9 will be arranged in its bearings in the frame and in the indicator with the greatest preciseness and nicety, and will be surrounded by two alining sleeves 10 and 11 also made and fitted with great exactness so that the indicator will be rendered highly sensitive and yield to the slightest variation from a plumb or level poistion. The sleeves above referred to are secured centrally to the inner faces of the frame members from which they project laterally inwards towards each other.
The point of the indicator is bifurcated, as at 12 so as to extend astride the dial 3 which is scribed with a scale of 860 degrees, divided into fractions or parts, or not, as may be desired.
The weighted end of the indicator is bifurcated or notched, as at 18, to enable it to be arranged astride of the inner edge of the dial 3, and to facilitate this construction, the lower end of the said weight may be made in two parts, 14 and 15, connected by a pin 16, as shown in Fig. 2, the notch 13 being formed in the part 14, which is formed on or secured directly to the stem of the indicator. This manner of guiding the weight as it swings around, insures it against becoming bound in any way and injured in case it should fall on its side.
The frame a which includes an outer plate 17 and a pair of laterally-projecting flanges 18, may be adjusted bodily by means of a pair of screws 19, to correct any deviation of the instrument from plumb or level consequent upon its casing becoming worn or otherwise injured, the screws passing through said plate, as shown, the free edges of the flanges 18 being soldered or otherwise secured to the rim.
XV hat is claimed is- In a combined plumb and level, the combination, with a dial, of an indicator having one end pointed and the other end weighted, the pointed end of the indicator being bifurcated for engagement with the dial, and the weighted end comprising two connected parts, one of said parts having a notch formed therein, into which the dial extends.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
STEPHEN F. HAMBLETON.
WVitnesses J. G. HAMBLnToN, JOHN River.
