UNITED STATES PATENT QFFTCE.
ANDREW .T. VAN DOREN, OF BUNKER HILL, INDIANA.
I-EEA'IING- SYSTEM.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW J. VAN DOREN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bunker Hill, in the county of Miami and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Heating Systems, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in hot water heating systems, particularly with reference to the construction of the furnace and with reference to the construction of the boiler, and it consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
One object of my invention is to simplify the construction of the furnace.
Another object is to simplify and cheapen the construction of the boiler.
Another object is to provide an improved form of furnace and boiler, which will enable the furnace and the water tubes of the boiler to be readily cleaned in a very short time, and to adapt the furnace to burn any kind of fuel.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of boiler and furnace for hot water heating systems embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sec tional view of the same, taken on the plane indicated by the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the water-back of the furnace which also forms the main body of the boiler.
The side walls 1 of my improved furnace may be made of. any suitable material. At a suitable distance from the upper side of the furnace, and over the portion thereof constituting the fire box 2 is a baffle 3, which is horizontally disposed, is of suitable length and has its side edges seated in grooves 41 in the inner surfaces of the side walls 1.
The front end of the furnace is formed by a plate 5, which is provided near its upper end with a manhole opening 6, is provided at a point opposite the fire box with a fuel feeding opening 7 and is provided near its lower end with an ash or draft opening 8. The doors 9, 10, and 11 are provided for the said openings. The rear end of the furnace is formed by a plate 12, which has an opening 13 extending in rear of the fire box and also extending above the baffle 3 into the smoke chamber 1& above the fire box. The front plate 5 and rear plate 12 are provided Specification of Letters Patent.

011 their inner sides with angle brackets or flanges 15, which support the front and rear ends of the grate 16 that divides the fire box 2 from the ash pit 17. The top 18 of the furnace may be made of plate or cast metal, and the same is provided in its front end with a smoke escape opening 19 for connection with a smoke pipe 20.
The boiler comprises a box or body 21 and a plurality of water tubes 22. The said box or body forms a water-back for the furnace proper, and said body is provided with a projecting surrounding flange 23 that bears against the back of the furnace and is secured thereto by bolts 24. The water tubes, which are attached to the front side of said body or water-back extend longitudinally into the furnace, some of them entering and extending longitudinally through the fire box, arranged at the sides thereof and under the bafi le 3, and others extending longitudinally through the smoke chamber 14, over said baffle. Any suitable number of flow pipes 25 and of return pipes 26 may be attached to the said body or water-back. The front end of each water tube is closed by a suitable screw plug 27.
It will be observed by reference to Fig. 1 that all of the water tubes may be rendered distinctly visible by opening the doors in the front side of the furnace, that access may be readily attained to all the interior parts of the furnace and to all of the water tubes, and hence that the furnace may be very readily cleaned of accumulations of soot, so that the furnace may, with very little trouble, be kept in perfect working condition. It will be further understood that the furnace and boiler are extremely simple in construction and that the same may be readily manufactured at comparatively small cost.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is
The herein described furnace comprising a casing having side walls, front and rear plates, and a top plate, said front and rear plates and top plate being attached to and connecting said side walls, said front plate having openings and closures therefor, said top plate having a smoke escape opening and said rear plate having an opening substantially coincident with the fire box and a portion of the smoke box formed above the fire box, grate bars extending longitudinally of the furnace supports for said grate bars on the inner sides of the front and rear plates, a
Water-back detachably secured on the outer 0f the front side of the furnace and having side of the rear plate and covering the said removable closures for their front ends. 10 opening therein, said Water-hack having In testimony whereof, I affix my signature flow and return pipes and being further proin presence of two Witnesses.
