HOUSEHOLD BOILER AND STEAM APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 17, 1908.
Application filed May 3, 1907. Serial No. 371,612.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NOAH l/V. THARP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elkin, in the county of Surrey and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Household Boilers and Steam Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a culinary article and relates more particularly to a boiler or canning apparatus especially adapted for preserving fruits and vegetables in glass jars, cans or other containers.
The invention has for one of its objects to improve and simplify the construction and operation of devices of this character, so as to be comparatively easy and inexpensive to manufacture, thoroughly reliable in use and convenient to manipulate.
A further object of the invention is the pro vision of a boiler having means for efiect ively heating water and generating steam and equipped with trays or holders, whereby the jars or cans can be conveniently inserted or removed and supported in position during the steaming operation.
With these objects and others in view, as
will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises the various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, which will be more fully described hereinafter and set forth with particularity in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates one of the embodiments of the invention :F igure 1 is a perspective view of the apparatus. Fig. 2 is a plan View thereof. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 83 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4C is a central longitudinal section. Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view.
Similar reference characters are employed to designate similar parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawing, 1 is a sheet metal receptacle or container of rectangular or any other suitable form and'having a rim 2 in the form of a square bead that serves to materially strengthen the upper edge. Arranged within the receptacle at the bottom thereof are two transversely extending chambers 3 and 4, located at the end walls and connected by a central duct 5, the chamber or head 3 is open at itsbottom, as indicated at 6 so as to permit the fire gases to enter the chamber 3, and pass to the chamber 4 by way of the duct 5. By this arrangement a large heating surface is provided by which heat is transmitted to the body of water contained in the receptacle 1. The chamber a is provided with an outlet or neck 7 on which is fitted a stack 8 having an elbow of suitable form for connection with the neck, the said stack being equipped with a hood 9. @n opposite sides of the duct 5 and between the under chambers 3 and 4E are pockets 10, in which water is contained.
The cans or jars are placed in holders, designated generally by 11, whereby a large number of jars or cans can be conveniently placed in the receptacle and removed therefrom. Each holder has an inverted U-shaped handle or bail 1a, the vertical portions of which are provided with a series of notches 15. Arranged in the receptacle 1 at the rim thereof are cross bars 16 for supporting the holders 11, any pair of notches 15 of the arms of the bail being engaged on its respective cross bar to support the holder and contents in the receptacle. In this manner the holders can be supported at any desired height.
In practice the apparatus is placed on a furnace in such position that the products of combustion can pass through the chambers 3 and 4 and duct 5, and thereby effectively heat the water which is placed in the receptacle for generating steam. The cans of fruit or vegetables to be preserved are placed on the holders 11 and the latter inserted in the receptacle. A suitable cover may be then placed on the receptacle so that the contents of the cans or jars can be thoroughly steamed and sterilized, after which the sealing is done in the usual manner.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention together with the device, which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, is
1. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a receptacle having a fiat bottom provided with an opening extending transversely across one end thereof, a horizontal wall in the receptacle at =one end thereof and disposed over the opening, a vertical wall cooperating with the first wall to form a chamber and provided with an opening, a'chainber in the opposite end of the receptacle and provided with an opening, a duct formed on the bottom of the receptacle and having its ends connected with the openings of the chambers, a short tube extending out of the receptacle and communicating with the second-mentioned chamber, and a stack removably supported on the said tube.
2.111 an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a receptacle having a fiat ing with the bottom and sides of the receptacle and wallsof the chambers to form water-containing pockets, and a fine removably supported on the receptacle.
In testimony whereof, I attix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
