Description

A. CANNON, Jr.
DUMB WAITER.
No. 90.422. Patented May 25, 1869.
/ffZzW ARNOUT CANNON, JR.,-'OF POUGH'KEEPSIE, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 90,422, dated May 25, 1869.
IMPROVED Dm WAII'ER.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the some.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Annou'r CANNON, Jr., of the city of Poughkeepsie, in the county of Dutchess, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dumb Waiters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, forming'part ofthis specification, in which- Figure l is a front View of my improved dumb waiter, the front wall of the well being removed.
Figure 2 is a horizontal section of the well, taken through the line 21-11:, fig. 1,, and showing a top view of the mechanism.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to improve the construction of dumb waiters, so as to make them stronger,
safer, more'durable, and more easily controlled, so that they will remain stationary in any position in which they may be placed, both when loaded and when empty; and
It consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of various partsof the hoisting-device, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the well, in which the waiter moves up and 1 down.
B is the waiter, in which the articles to be carried up and down are placed, and which is constructed in the ordinary manner.
0 is the rope, by which the waiter B is suspended, and the end of which is securely attached to the top of the said waiter B.
As the rope 0 passes up, it passes over the guidepulley D, around the large pulley, E, attached to the shaft I around the guide-pulley G, over. the pulley H, and into the weight-chamber I, where it is attached to the weight J, which should be about one and a half time heavier than the waiter B.
K is the hoisting-wheel, which is attached to. the.
same shaft, F, with the large pulley, E, as shown in fig. 2. i
L is the endless hoisting-rope, which passes over the hoisting-wheel K, down along thelsides of the well A,
around the guide-pulleys M, and around the weight-- pulley N.
The pulley N should, be from eight to twelvepounds weight, more or less, and its journals enter and work in slots in standards 0, whichare placed and secured in the lower part of the well A, in such positions that the axis of the pulley N may be in the same vertical-plane with the axis of the hoisting-wheel K, so that the weighted pulley N may not only keep the hoistingrope I J taut, but may act as a balance-weight, in connection with the friction of the rope O, to hold the waiter stationary at any desired elevation.
The grooves in the hoisting wheel K and in the large pulley E, should be made V-shaped, to prevent the ropes L and G from slipping.
' Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination 'of the heavy, or weighted pulley N with the endless hoisting-rope L and hoistingwheel K, substantially as herein shown and described, that is to say, in such a way that the axis of the suspended heavy pulley N maybe in the same vertical plane with the axis of the hoisting-wheel K, as and for the purposes set forth. 7
2. The combination and arrangement of the rope O,
guide-pulley D, large pulley E, guide-pulleysfG and H, and weight J, with each other, with the hoistingwheel K, and waiter B, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
