Be it known that l, .Horus ll. (li-nuern- LAIN, a citizen of the United States, residing` at Depew, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Storage Batteries, of which is a sectional elevation of a battery receptacleor tank provided with my improve ments. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof with the cover partly removed. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary vertical section through the cover and the upper part of the tank at right angles to Fig. l, in line 3-3, Fig. 2. Fig. el is a fragmentary vertical section through the cover and upper part of the tank lining, in linel 4 4, Fig. 2, on an enlargedscale.

A represents the outer portion of a foursided battery tank or vessel, preferably of wood and provided with supporting rollers a and spacing side pieces a of porcelain or other non-conducting material, two of these tanks A A being preferably secured together' side by side in a well known manner.
B represents the inner portion or lining of the tank which is preferably constructed of antimonial sheet lead and secured in the outer or Wooden portionby a layer of cement in the usual Way. YThis lining is provided above the outerl portion with a. .top flange C comprising an outwardly-extending bottom portion or horizontal shoulder c and an up- Wardly-extending marginal portion c having at its upper end an inwardly overhang ing lip c2. The horizontal shoulder,l c supports the cover D which rests withits marginal portion d on this shoulder. The lip c? extends inwardly only over the outer porA tion of the horizontal shoulder c, leavingthe inner portion of the shoulder exposed, und the cover D does not extend outwardly to the upright portion c. This permits a solid or undivided cover to be placed upon the Specification of Letters Patent.

The cover is provided inside of its marginal portion or flange (l with an upright shoulder nl, formed preterably' by arranging the marginal portion d of the cover at a lower level than the body portion of the cover, The channel or groove which is formed above the horizontal shoulder 0 or the lining and the horizontal marginal flange (l of the cover, and which is bounded on the outside by the upright portion o of the lining and on the inside by the upright shoulder d of the cover, is iilled with a cement packing E which is applied in a plastic condition and hardene and secures the cover securely in place. rlhe inwardly overhanging lip G2 of the lining prevents this packing from being raised out of its seat by the shocks to which the receptacle may be subjected when used' on vehicles. Any suitable asphalt or petroleum con'iposition or cement may be used for this packing.
The cover, which may be made of any suitable material, for instance, hard rubber or antin'ionial lead, is provided with upright collars or short tubes F, through which the terminals G or' the plates G entend upwardly. rilhese collars or tubes preferably taper upwardly and are considerably larger in diameter than the terminals. The space between these collars or tubes and the ternir nale Ais filled by bushings or packing sleeves H of yielding, non-conducting material which hold the terminals yieldingly in po sition and close the openings so tightly that the electrolyte is not liable to spattcr or leak through the same. These bushings are ref# erably made of sponge rubber which 1s so vulcanized as to have a smooth nish on the inner and outer sides, as-indicated at 7L h, to fit closely against the terminals and collars. These soft and impervious bushings are so y thick as to allow of considerable lateral movement of the terminal in the opening of the cover under the jarring which the battery is liable to receive when used on a railway car or other vehicle, and capacity of yielding in a lateral direction is greater than the possible lateral play-of the plates in the vessel and prevents the jars or shocks Jfrom being transmitted to the cover and the cement packing and injuring or destroying the same.
