Description
HANS T. WIDGREN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SHOE-POLISH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
-Patented Nov. 17, 1908.
Application filed January 13, 1908. Serial No. 410,504.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HANS T. WIDGREN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe-Polish, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to shoe polish and the object of my invention is to provide a shoe polish which may be readily and easily applied to the ordinary leather shoes to color them any desired tint. to match or harmonize with the costume of the wearer.
A further object of my invention is to provide a shoe polish as mentioned which may be readily removed from the shoes when it is desired to change the color thereof.
A further object of my invention is to provide a shoe polish characterized as mentioned which shall not be deleterious to the leather but which on the contrary shall serve to keep the leather soft and pliable.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
In carrying out my invention I prefer to provide the shoe polish or dressing in the seven positive colors namely: yellow, red, blue, green, brown, black, and white, the user to compound the desired tints therefrom as needed. However, the dressing may be prepared in an endless variety of tints without departing from the scope of my invention.
The shoe dressing is compounded as follows Powdered coloring matby weight.
ter 4 parts Water, containing a small quantity of salt, sodium carbonate and an egg 8 parts by weight. ard oil 1 part by weight.
Syrup (corn or cane or mixture of both) 1 parts by weight. Mucilage formed of gum arabic and water 8 parts by weight.
4 parts by weight of dry powdered pigment is ground well into 8 parts of vehicle com-v red, ultramarine blue, chrome green, burnt umber, bone black, and zinc white. To twelve parts of the compound thus formed is added 1 part of lard oil well stirred in after which is added four parts of syrup and eight parts of mucilage. The syrup used is preferably ninety per cent. (90%) corn syrup and ten per cent. (10%) cane syrup, althou 'h either may be used separately or in difi'erent proportions; and the mucilagc is formed by dissolving one pound of gum arabic in two and a half pints of water. The compound is allowed to stand for one week after which it is ready for use.
The egg is added to the water to form a vehicle for the color and also helps to keep the leather soft and adds luster to the polish. The salt preserves the egg and the soda neutralizes the acids in the color. The lard oil preserves the leather and keeps it soft and pliable and also prevents the dressing from cracking. The syrup and mucilage are added for an adhesive and to give luster to the polish.
In using the polish or dressing two or more of the colorsmay be mixed together to form a dressing of the desired tint. Usually two applications of the dressing will give an even color although sometimes three or more may be preferred. Unless the dressing has remained upon the leather for a great length of time it may be readily washed off to be replaced by another tint.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A dressing for shoes or leather articles comprising a suitable coloring matter; a vehicle formed of water, salt, sodium carbonate and egg; lard oil; syrup and mucilage, substantially as described.
2. A leather dressing comprising a suitable powdered coloring matter four parts; a vehicle consisting of water into which is dissolved salt, sodium carbonate and a well beaten egg, eight parts; lard oil, one part; syrup four parts; and mucilage eight parts.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HANS T. \VIDGREN. lVitnesses:
HELEN F. LILLIS, HOWARD S. AUsTIN.
