MEANS FOR CHARG-ING REFUSE-DESTRUCTORS AND OTHER FURNACES.

Be it known that I, HENRY NORMAN LEASK, British subject, and resident of Egre mont, county of Chester, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Charging Refuse-Destructors and other Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the charging or stoking of the furnaces of refuse destructors and other steam generators and also of other furnaces kilns and the like and is designed to provide an improved arrangement whereby the labor of stoking is simplified and reduced and whereby the period during which the furnace door need be open may be're duced to a minimum.
In refuse destructors as at present constructed two or three openings are generally necessary one in the top or arch of the furnace through which the charge is inserted and which very considerably weakens the arch and the necessary usual opening in the front of the furnace for access thereto and through which the rake or other device for spreading the charge is inserted and through which it is also clinkered, or another door at the side or back through which the refuse is shoveled or otherwise introduced or through which the charge dropped through the first opening may be spread.
The invention consists essentially in constructing a channel or chamber which may be inclined, in front of the furnace charging door or doors, which during charging may or may not be inclosed by a cover or door and which is lled with the charge of combustible material in any suitable manner preferably from a hopper or hoppers arranged above one or a series of such chambers, and a ram or other pusher operated either by hydraulic or steam pressure mechanically or by hand to push the charge forward into the furnace.
The invention will be fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings which show the invention as applied to a refuse destructor.

In that form of the invention shown in Figs. l and 2 a platform A is arranged along one side of the furnace B, or a series of fur Specification of Letters Patent.

naces, and on a level above that of the feeding doors C. In the platform A channels or chambers D are formed opposite the door of each furnace, which may or may not be provided with lids covers or doors E which when closed form part of the platform A.
A hopper or hoppers F are conveniently arranged above the platform through which the combustible material is fed thereto and from which it is fed to the various channels or chambers D in the desired quantities. If desired a separate hopper F may be arranged over each channel D to feed directly into same. A passage or chamber G is provided in front of the channels D along which runs a trolley H carrying a hydraulic or other ram J to push the charge into the furnace, and if necessary spread it. If desired instead of employing a movable ram, separate fixed rams may be employed for each furnace, or again instead of employing a ram, a man with a pusher or rake may push the charge into the furnace and spread it.
In a modification instead of the channels D being made below the level of the platform A they may be constructed so as to rest upon it. Or one channel mounted upon runners or a truck and running along the platform A may be employed to feed a number of cells or furnaces. In this case if desired the ram J may be mounted on the same runners or truck as the channel D.
The furnace door C is provided with a lip L hanging therefrom which when the door is opened or raised, rises with it and closes the narrow space l/I between the end of the channel D and the front of the furnace into which normally the door fits to prevent any of the charge entering same and fitting it up.
What I claim as my invention and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a furnace, a chute eX- terior of and spaced from the furnace for supplying said furnace with fuel or the like, the furnacephaving an opening to receive the fuel, a door for closing the furnace opening and elevatable above the latter, and means connected to the door for closing the space between the chute and the furnace and movable simultaneously with the door to occupy a position around the furnace opening or be depressed below the latter opening.
Q. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a furnace having a charging opening, a chute spaced from the furnace and adapted to receive a charge, the charge being movable from the chute into and through the furnace opening, means movably connected to the upper part of the chute for closing the upper portion thereof, and means simultaneously operative for closing the space between the chute and the furnace with the door when the latter is opened, the said means being moved away from the space between the chute and furnace when the door is closed.
3. In an apparatus of the class described, a furnace having a charging opening, a vertically slidable door coperating with said opening, a chute leading to said opening and spaced from the furnace, the chute being adapted to support a charge prior to its entrance through the furnace opening, and means simultaneously movable with said door for closing the space between the chute and furnace around the furnace opening when the door is opened.
4. In an apparatus of the class described, a furnace having a charging opening, a sliding door coperating with said opening, a chute exterior of the furnace and spaced from the latter, means for pushing a charge from said chute through the furnace opening, and means connected to the door for closing the space between the chute and the furnace when the door is opened.
5. In an apparatus of the class described, a furnace having a chargin-gopening, means leading` to said opening for supporting a charge and spaced from the furnace, and a door movably cooperating with the charging opening of the furnace and provided with a depending lip, the door being adapted for vertical movement to uncover said opening and to move said lip to a position to close the space between the chute and the furnace.
6. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a furnace having a charging opening, a chute exterior of and spaced from the furnace and leading to the opening, means for closing the upper portion of the chute, a door for the charging openingof the furnace and provided with means for closing the space between the latter and the adjacent end of the chute, and means consisting of a ram for pushing a charge from the chute into the furnace.
