Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 17, 1908.
- Application me@ september is, 1907'. sum N5. 393,487.
To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, URIAH G. PoTTs, a resident of Martinsbur in the county of 'Berkeley' and State of gVest Virginia, have inventeda new and useful Improvement in Rails; and I do hereby declare the following to lbe a full, clear, and exact description thereof. V
My invention relates to rails, and has special reference to the class of rails for use on railroads, traction roads, etc. f
The object of my invention is to provide a rail which can easily and quickly be renewed in case of wear or breakage without disturbing a solid track, and one which will always be rm and rigid when in position and use.`
My invention consists, generally stated, in
the -novel arrangement, construction and' combination of parts, as hereinafter more specifically set forth and described and particularly pointed out in theclaims.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to construct and use my invention, I will describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawing, in which z- Figure 1 is a cross-section of a track employing my improved rail. Fig. 2 a longitudinal section of ay track showing a side elevationof the rail. Fig.- 3 is an enlar ed cross-section of the rail. Fig. 4 is a lke view showing another form of the rail. Fig. 5 is an end view of another form of the supporting base.Y Fig. V6 is a cross-section of another form of base.
Like symbols of reference herein indicate like parts in each of the figures of the draw` ing.
As illustrated in the drawing, 1 re resents the base section of the improved rai which is intended to be secured in position by bein embedded in the concrete a or can be secure upon theties of the road-bed according to any of the approved manners of securing rails. The ends of each of the base sections 1 are cut square across, so that they will abut against each other when the rail is laid down in order that the rail may be built up in position without diiiiculty. The 'baseange 2 of the section 1 .is of the usual shape and size, with the web 3rising up from the same for some distance, and the up r end'of said web isisplit or openedl out Vto orm a channel Abase 4, which thereby forms a.- space 5 and the vside-webs 6. This space or hollowed out portion 5 is 4intended to receive the tongue or flange with which the tread section is supplied and-the tops or upper ends of the webs 6 arerounded, as at 7 in order to conform to the under face ofthe upper part or head of .the tread section. v
Y The tread section is shown at 8, and is' rovided with the tongue or Hange 9 exten ing down from thev head 10 thereof, which flange' 1s of the size and shape tofit in and conform to the space 5 in the channel base 4 ofthe base-section 1. These tread sections are out square across attheir ends, and the under faces 11 ofthe head portions rest against the 'rounded ends 7 onl the webs 6.
formed in the webs 6 and tongue 9 respectively on the base sections and tread sections, and. such ,keys are 'heldin place b means of nuts 15 engaging with the ends o said keys.-
These keys 1-2 are provided with an inclined upper face for engaging with a. likeface in the holes 13011 .one of thewebs 6` and with a "like -face on the holes-14 in the tongue 9,
While a-strai ht portion is formed on said keysforsai nuts and for fitting in like holes inthe other holes 13 in the other web 6, .so that said arrangement will hold the two sections of the 'rail together in a solid and rigid manner by drawing the tongue downward and will prevent any movementof the sections or vibrationor noise of one part upon the other.
In layin the rails 1 for forming a track such as is s own in' Fig. 1, a tie-beam 16 eX- tends between such rails, being connected to -the web 3 of the base sections 1 by means of bolts 17 passing throughv said web and` through iianges 18 on said' beam, and such beam is embedded in the' concrete a around therails. n
In the use of the rails for traction purposes, the inner web 6 on the base sections 1 is .provided with zin-inwardly projecting liange 19 for forming a girder rail to act as a ve-4 I. in the base sections,a s is shown in Fig. 4.
The base section 1 can also be provided with track 4flange 19 on both sides ofthe webs i 6 on the same to lform a double 'girder rail,
:as shown in Fig,v v and.- the space 5 can 'extend entirely through the web 3 of the base section l, asl shown in Fig. 6. Itwill thus lbe seen that the sections of'my improved raged by the Contact of there ith.
rail are of such a shape and'form that they may be rolled in an ordinary rolling mill,
vvand thusv produced without any unnecessaryl or additional cost, and when soproduced and properly perforated to receive the wedgebolts, they can be readily 'laid'upon theroadbed and secured thereon as may be desired. The base sections may be made of cheaper,
metal than the tread sections as the latter alone are subjected to beingworn or damthe traveling wheels The tread sections are' inade to break joints with thev joints in the base sections if ,desired, ,and when they are finally bolted to place lther'ail is quite as rigid, firm and sev-cure at allpoi'nts as if'made in' a. single piece, and this, of course, Will occur throughout the entire length of the vrail construction.` The concrete a can be provided withl are not required to be removed from the as they will not be liable to breakage, -while' '35. any'- of the tread sectionsv may beremoved` road-bed, and will seldom need repaving,
' and replaced when-necessary, 'and any such.
section when removed may be cut and re-v placed in divisions, if desired, it being onlyl necessary to have the holes Properly punched through the flange and properly spaced. It Will thus be obvious that the rail may easilv and quickly'be repaired upon the 'tread sections in place.
road, as all the. joints are of extreme sim plicity and .will not get out of order.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A rail having a base section formed with a channel web and a girder flange eX- tending out from said web, .a tread section having a tongue fitting within said web, and wedge #shaped bolts passing through in? clined faced4v holes in one of said web portions and tongue and through a straight hole in the other web portion by astraight portion thereon, 'for holding said base and tread sections in place.
2. A rail having a base section formed with a channel web having inclined interior sides, a tread section having an inclined sided tongue fitting within said web, and wedge shaped boltsv passing through ini elined facedholes in one of said web ortons and tongue and through` a straight hole in the other web portion by a straight portion thereon, for holding said base and 3. A rail having a base section formed vvlth a channel web having inclined lnterioi" sides and a glrder flange extendlng out from Asaid web, a tread section having an inclined sided tongue fitting within said web, and
"\ln testimony whereof, I the said URIAH G.
Por'rs, have hereunto' set my hand.,y
