G. J. KEPPLINGER. FLOOR PLANER AND SGRA'PER.
APPLICATION FILED'HAB.. 21, 1908.
GEORGE J. KEPPLINGER, OF DWIGHT, ILLINOIS.
. l:FLOOR PLANER AND ySCRAPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 17, 1908.
Application led March 27. l9081 SiiltNo. 423,768.A
To fell; athena may comme:
' Beit known. that I, GEOGREJ. Kenianen,
a citizen. ofethe .United vStates, residing at Dwight, Ain theacounty. of Livingston and State .o Illinois, haveinvented a new and useful Floor; Planerand Scraper, vof which the ,following is a specication...v
This invention relates to an :implementifor planng-.and.scraping.oors; and has for its vobject to provide; atoolwhichshallbe strong and simplev in construction `and capable by its own. weightof holding the planing bit or scraping blade work.
"Another object ,fj invention.. pertains-to the-mannerof mounting sthe holder for the raf-merwherebyy it m y be r uickl changed. from an. inclined. to; substlentially vertical positioneto enablcthe tool to beoperated respectively :asa floor planer or scraper.
With-these andother objects in view the 'inventing consists of. the novel construction combination and arrangement-of arts heredescribed.- and claimedand illix'strated .in :the: accompanying drawing .in .whiche- Figure -1' is a perspective'view; of the improvedrplanerand scraper; iFig. .2 a longitudinal sectional; .view ofA the 'same adjusted as.;aplaner; a, transverse sectional view in the line13-3-of Fi .2; -Fig. 4 a longitudinal sectional .view- -o the bit holder .on the-linel44 oifFig.: 3. arranged. as a scraper, looking :in .the direction. .ofthev arrows, and Fig.. a view: ofa detail of construction.
Similar reference numerals are used for s the same parts in all the figures.I l,
In the drawing the numeral-1 indicates a heavy rectangular open.frame,`made preferably lof c ast iron, with parallel side walls 2 and 3 and a rear wall 4 ha vertically disposed outer and inner faces w en in osi'- tion on the floor, and a front wall 5, the aces of which incline in opposite directions from the topto the wider bottom. The interme-4 diate portion of the bottom of the sides 2 and 3 are arallel to the top of the frame but incline sllightl'y upward at their front and rear ends to prevent contact with the lloor when the tool is in operation.
The rear end of the frame is supported at each side on a wheel 6 mounted on a bolt 7 passing through the respective side walls of the frame and held by a nut. The y dg;-
vent. the latter dragging the tool is pushed or pu l von the iioor when ed thereover.l
Within the frame l is placed the holder 8 for^ the planer bit and scraper blade and comprlses two parallel side bars 9 and 10 cross connected atthe .top by bar 11 andat its lowerend by a plate 12. These parts are preferably cast ln-tegral but they may be built up if desired. The. side bar has a rearwardly extending lug or projection 13 near its lower end provided with a threaded opening Afor a fastening bolt 14 which eX- tends through a vertical slot 15 in the side wall-3 of the frame 1. A nut 16 threaded on the bolt 14 outside the frame secures the holder in xed position when htened, and
when loosened, the position o- -the 'holder' rear face, opposite the olt hole in the lug or projection' 13, in which notch is seated the head of a bolt 17 for supporting the holder 8 on that side of the tool. The bolt 17 extends through a vertical slot 18 in the side 3 of theframe 1 and is held immovable by a nut 19 on the outside of the frame and opposite the nut 16.
. The numeral 20 indicates the plane bit or iron, the lower end of its rear slde bearing against thecross plate 12v of the holder 8 and 'clamped to said holder by a front-plate 21 and bolts 22 passing through slots 23 'in the ends of plate 21 and into the side bars 42v and 3..' .On tightening these bolts the plate 21: presses the bit" 20 against the holder and prevents thebit being moved. When the bit 2G-is to be raised. or lowered -in the holder,
this movement is accomplished by means of` a screw stem 24 extending through a lonfritudinally disposed threaded socket 25 on t e.`
top cross bar 1l of said holder and swiveled in a coupling 26 connected to the upper end of the blt. Thescrew stem 24 is provided onits upper end with a hand wheel 27 or other means for turning it, while its lower end is journaled in the upper end ofthe coupling 26 and retained 1n rotatable connection therewith by a yoke shaped key 28.
fitted into a slot in the coupling, the legs 29 of said key straddlin a reduced neck 30 on the lower end ofsai ,screwI stem. The up.
per .end of the bit 2 0 extends between 31 on the coupling and is detachably tened thereto'by a 32. .j
lmade in the edge of the blade holder 8.
The tool is operated by a handle 33 bolted to the sidesof the frame near the front and extends rearwardly at an upward inclination vto such height as to be grasped by a person standing erect. A brace 34 is fastened to the rea'i` wall of the frame and to the handle to give it steadiness and rigidity.
When the tool is to be used as a floor planer, .the holder is set at an angle as shown in Figs. l and 2 and pushed over the floor, its Weight holding the bit to its Work, but When a floor is to be scraped, the bit is re-v moved by loosening'the clamping plate and disengaging the coupling 26 by removing the pin 32. Ay scraping blade is then inserted in the holder, and the latter adjusted to vertical position, see Fig. 4, by loosening the i nuts on bolts 14, 17 and 37. The holder when chan ed to an erect osition raises the bolt 14 an causes the bo t 37 to move for Ward'hence the necessity for the slots 15 and 18. After the holder has been fastened by tightening' the nuts on the aforesaid bolts, the bolt 17 is raised in its slot until its head is seated in ,the notchA 9a, the nut is then tightened andv after adjusting the edge of, the blade the tool is ready for use as a scraper. y i
