WHEEL ATTACHMENT.
No. 903,845. Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Nov. 17, 1908.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LnMUnL L. CURTIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Geary, in the county of Blaine and State of Oklahoma, have invented a new and useful Wheel Attachment; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains 'to make and use the same.
This invention relates to wheels generally; and the invention in its broadest latitude resides in a new and novel device especially adapted for repairing, strengthening and tightening wheels, and when used for tightening wheels, it serves an excellent purpose for removing the dish from wheels which is caused from constant use thereof.
Furthermore, the invention aims as the most particular and essential object to provide a device of this character comprising flexible rods, spliced together by brazing, or other means, as shown, also so as to form elliptical loops, closed at their extreme ends;
' the rods forming the loops being designed to engage annular grooves, formed about the hub of the wheels, at the time when it is desired to utilize the device for the purposes and objects as above set forth.
A further object of the invention dwells in the simplicity and the inexpensiveness of construction thereof as will be readily manifest.
The features and elements and the arrangement thereof, for accomplishing the objects of the invention, may be changed and varied that is to say, in a practical application of the device, with an understanding that the changes and variations accruing from said application are limited to the scope of the appended claims.
To obtain a full and correct understanding of the details of construction, combinations of features, elements and advantages, reference is to be had to the hereinafter set forth description and the accompanying drawings in connection therewith, wherein,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wheel, upon which, the invention is applied. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of the strengthening and tightening means, which consists of rods brazed together in such wise as to form an elliptical-shaped loop. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through the tightening nut.
Like reference characters are used to indicate similar features and elements throughout the several illustrations of the drawings. In regard to the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in the several illustrations, by figures, 1 designates rods which are brazed together near their ends, as at 2, so as to form an elliptical-shaped loop 3, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. Each one of the rods is severed as at 4, and the severed ends are threaded as at 5, which ends are engaged by a right and left threaded tightening nut 6 as clearly shownin Fig. 3. The extreme ends of the rods as at 7 are threaded, as
clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3; these,
threaded ends as at 7 are adapted to be inserted through apertures 8 formed in the rim of the wheel, that is, when said rods are appliedto a wheel for tightening, strengthening and removing the dish from a wheel, after which, nuts 9 are threaded to said ends 7 whereby the rods may be tightened, as will be clearly manifest. To rotate the nuts 9 so as to tighten the rods, aspanner is em ployed, which is adapted to engage apertures in the outer face of said nuts, as will be clearly understood.
In applying a device as above set forth, to a wheel to be strengthened, the wheel is first provided with apertures in its rim, to receive the ends as at 7, of the rods, and also nuts 9; secondly, the hub of the wheel 011 either side thereof, is provided with a pair of annular grooves 10 which receive the rods forming the sides of the loops 3, so as to prevent displacement thereof, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
A wheel equlpped with a device of this character as shown in Fig. 1, can be readily strengthened, tightened and the dish therein can be also readily removed by adjusting the nuts 9 and 6, as will be clearly evident.
From the foregoing, the essential features, elements and the operation of the device together with the simplicity thereof, will be clearly apparent.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful by the protection of Letters-Patent, is:
1. In combination with a wheel rods brazed together near their ends, each of said rods being severed, nuts joining the severed rods, said rods adapted to engage the hub of said wheel, and means for connecting the outer free ends of said rods to the rim of the wheel.
2. In combination with a wheel, ods brazed together so as to form an ellipticalshaped loop, the rods forming the sides of said loops being severed, nuts joining the severed ends, the rods forming the sides of the loops being adapted to engage the hub of the wheel on either side of the spokes of the wheel and means for connecting the outer free ends of the rods to the rim of the wheel.
3. In combination with a wheel, rods brazed together near their ends, so as to form elliptical-shaped loops, the rods forming the sides of said loops being severed, nuts joining the severed ends, the hub of said wheel being provided 011 either side with a pair of annular grooves, the rods forming the sides of the loops being adapted to engage'said grooves upon either side of the spokes, and means for connecting the outer free ends of the rods to the rim of the wheel.
4. In combination with a wheel, rods brazed together near their ends, so as to form elliptical-shaped loops, said wheel having its hub provided on either side with a pair of annular grooves, the rods forming the sides of the loops being adapted to engage said grooves upon either side of the spokes, and
means for connecting the outer free ends of the rods to the rim of the wheel.
5. In combination with a wheel, rods brazed together near their ends, so as to form elliptical-shaped loops, said wheel having its hub provided on either side with a pair of annular grooves, said wheel having its rim provided with a plurality of apertures, the rods forming the sides of the loops being adapted to engage said grooves, the apertures of the rim being adapted to receive the extreme ends of said rods and nuts mounted in said apertures and engaging the said ends of the rods.
6. In combination with a wheel, rods brazed together near their ends, so as to form ellipticalshaped loops, the rods forming the sides of said loops being severed, nuts joining the severed ends thereof, said wheel having its-hub provided upon either side with a pair of annular grooves, said wheel having its rim provided with a plurality of apertures, the rods forming the sides of the loops being adapted to engage said grooves, and nuts mounted in said apertures, and adapted to engage the extreme ends of said rods so as to tighten them.
