. f Application led January 15, Serial No. 410,991.
To all whom it may concer/:
Be it known that I, citizen of the French Republic, residing at Paris, France, and Whose posit-oiliceliiaddress 'is 2 7 Rue de Londres,
in the [said city, have` A invented certain new and -,.i'iseful Improve- E ments in Pawl Transmissio'h-,Gearfor Taximeters, of which the following is a specification. ,l f 1o This invention has for'itsobjectthe appli- -f dcation to taXimeter's' of arpavvl transmisaon gear intended to replace the ,toothed Wheel gear generally used. The varrangement formingthe object of the l/invention may 5 also be used in other. apparatus, such as water meters, gas meters and tlielike.
Driving arrangements consisting of toothed wheel gearhave a number of disath vantages, such as-'high cost, diilicultyL'ad` justment and friction caused-by a incre, or less, amount of eccentricity' of the wheels; the latter often-'causing the stoppage of the clock in the taximeters working on lboth time and dist-ance tariff. In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 shows the application of the pawl-c`ontrollng .rrange'ment working according to time tariifyfandvFig. 2 shows an arrangement' Working according to time and distance tariffs. y f l;
In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the l`arbor lof the clock mechanism indicated diagrammatically by the boxino' 23 carries a ratchet'wheel 2. A lever 3 helsd in position by a spring 4 and capable/of turning on an intermediate pivot 5 has at que end a 'tooth serving as a pawl which comes into engagement .Withthe ratchet wheel 2 said lever having attached 'to its other end by' a pivot pin 7 another pawl 8; This pawl is held by spring 9 to engage a ratchetwheel l10l lwhich controls the registering apparatus. A l second pawl 11 tion of the whee 10. Y The operation of the mechanism is as fol- 'l lows: The rotation of the ratchet wheel 2 in the direction of the arrow causes the lever '8 to turn on the pivot 5 so' that the ratchet' wheel 10 is also rotated-in the same 'direction by means of. the pawl 8. This principle of power transmission is also applicableito taxlmeters working according to time and distance tariffsv and allows the greater part of the complicated members ofthe double' wheel to be dispensed with. The time and distance arrangement illustrated in Fig. 2
CHARLES Misoann revents the backwardmoy comprises, in addition to the hereinbefore, AV
described time tarii' gear, a mechanism which imparts to the ratchetwheel 10 aro@ by the vehicle.
tation proportional to the distance coveredgip Qn they" spindle l2 driven by'ione-of tlief'V vehicle aiyheels'as 20, through the intermediary of/connecting bevel gears as 21 and, 22,
is mounted a cam 13 acting which is and held in on the lever 14';
.its initial position by a spring pivoted between its ends as at 15 16; The said lever '14 carries by means of a pivotf'pin 17 a pawl 18 whichA is kept in engagement withy the ratchet wheel l0 controlling the registering apparatus by the.
spring 19.
The object of the apparatus is to indicate price proportional to the time occupied whenever the speed ofthe vehicle is lessthan a given speed and proportional to the distance covered/,when thespeed of the vehicle exceeds the given speed.' The wheel 2 is controlled by the clock mechanism and the spindle 12 turns at a Ispeed proportional to the speed of the vehi'cle. The ratchet wheel 10 is actuated by one, or other, of the levers 9 rapidly. If'the apparatus is properly adjusted, thel ratchet wheel 10 will revolve at a speed proportional to that of the .ratchetwheel 2 when the vehicle moves forwardy at a i speed -less than t e predeterminated speed'. But when the chicle' moves more rapidly than this predetermined speed the lever 14 will cause 'the ratchet wheel -10 to o and 14, whichever oscillates the more' revolve and its speed will be 'proportional to' that ofthe spindle 12,; and consequently A,toi
according totime inthe former case'andaccording to distance in the latter case.
`the speed of the vehicle. The taril will be,` I A I Having now/particularly described and ascertained the nature'of-my lnvention and in what manner the same is to be performed,
I declare-that what I claimisf 1. Transmission means of the ty e set forth, comprising, in combination, a dliiving ratchet Wheel andits shaft,`a driven ratchet wheel andits shaft, said shaft being parallel, i
a member connecting said ratchet wheels to drive the latter from the former, said member com rising a lever pivoted midway of its lengt and provided with va tooth at one end to enga e said driving ratchet wheel and with a paw at its other end to engage said driven Wheehsaid tooth and said pawl engaging said wheels at corresponding sides Y thereof, and a spring 'for holding said lever with its toothed end in Constant engagement with said driving ratchet wheel.
2. Transmission means ot' the type sety forth, comprising, in combination, a driving ratchet wheel and .its sha'lft, a driven ratchet wheel and its shaft, said shatts being parallel,` mechanism for rotating; said drivingy ratchet wheel, a rotatable Cam, lnetlianism for rotating,r said (fain, transmission members` for rotating` said driven ratrliet wheel from said driving' wheel and also from said Cain, one member being a lever pivoted midway of its length, and having' a tooth at one end l15 to en `a fe said drivino wheel and a rawl aty b G 'D its` other end to engage said driven wheel, saidtooth and said pawl engaging' said wheels on corresponding sides thereot', a;
springfor holding.;Y said lever with its toothed end in constant engagement with Said driving Wheel, and the other member being a lever pivoted mid vay of its length and havinl@Y one end vformed for engagement by said am and having its other end provided with a paw] toengag'e said driven wheel,` said levers being angular-lv disposed, and e spring tor holding' said last'. named lever vvith its end in tonstant engagement 'with said Cam.
ln testimon)7 whereof 1 have hereunto set my hand in presence oleE tivo subscribing 'Witnesses.
