THOMAS P. TAYLOR, OF BRIDGEPOBT, CONNECTICUT.
COMBINED ABDOMEN-COMPRESS AND HOSE-SUPPORTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 2'7, 1908.
Patented Nov. 10, 1908.
Serial No. 435,305.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS P. TAYLOR, a citizen of the -United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Abdomen Compress and Hose Supporter; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to combined abdomen compress and hose supporters intended for use in connection with a corset, and has for its object to provide a serviceable and economical device of this description, and with this end in view my invention consists in the arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and then particularly pointed out in the claims which conclude this description.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is an elevation of my improvement, Fig. 2 a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing the pads connected to the resilient strip by means of metal clips. Fig. 3 a vertical central section of my improvement as it appears when in use on a corset, the latter being illustrated upon a human body as shown in outline.
Similar numbers of reference denote like parts in the several figures of the drawing.
In my application, Serial No. 455,303, filed on even date herewith, I have claimed a structure suspended by an elongated means of support immediately in front of the lower central portion of the hypogastric region of the abdomen, and I do not wish to be understood herein as laying any broad claim to such construction, the end aimed at by my presentinvention being to secure Letters Patent for a specific form of construction.
1 is a strip preferably made from thin resilient sheet metal, and having an opening 2 at the top for attachment to the stud of a corset clasp. 3, 4t, are suitably shaped cloth pads which are secured independent of each other to the bottom of the strip 1, and from these pads depend hose supporter webbings 5, 6. 7 is any ordinary buckle secured to the upper outer portion of the pad t, while 8 is a waist band strip secured to the similar portion of the pad 3.
I prefer to cut a triangular shaped opening 9 in the lower portion of the strip 1, and
to secure the pads thereto by passing the inner ends through this opening and then folding them back and stitching them to the main body of the pads as shown at Fig. 1, since in this construction the sides of the triangular shaped opening afford a good bearing surface so that the pads are not apt to tear free from the strip. But of course the inner ends of these pads may be eyeleted or otherwise secured to the bottom of the strip 1, although I do not consider this construction as good as that shown at Fig. 1.
If desired, additional security and strength 'may be given by introducing metal clips 10 through the opening 9, and then securing the inner ends of the pads directly to these clips as shown at Fig. 2.
hen the device is in position for use the strip will act as a long point of support and the lower portion thereof together with the pads will be suspended immediately in front of the lower central portion of the hypogastric region of the abdomen, and the tension of the waistband 8 will force the strip 1 upwardly thereby causing the same to assume a bowed form, the result being that the lower portion of the strip 1 will be forced inwardly against the bottom of the corset so as to exert a sustaining effectupon the abdomen.
The pads 3, 4t, are independent of each other and when they are held down by the strain from the stockings with which the webbings 5, 6, are engaged in the usual manner there can be no distortion of thepads and the latter will lie smoothly against the corset.
WVhile I prefer that the strip 1 should be made of thin sheet metal, I would say that the material from which said strip is made might be celluloid, bone, horn, or, in fact, any substance that has the necessary stififness and resiliency, and I therefore do not wish to be limited in this respect.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A device of the character described, comprising a stiff resilient elongated strip adapted at its upper end to be secured to a stud of a corset fastening, flexible pads independently secured to the lower extremity of said strip and carrying hose supporter webbings, and a waistband and fastening means secured to the outer ends of said pads, the length of said strip being such that when it is in position on a corset said pads will be suspended immediately in front of the lower central portion of the hypogastric region of the abdomen.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a still resilient elongated strip provided at its upper end with a suitably shaped opening for attachment to a stud of a corset fastening and having in its lower end a triangular shaped opening, flexible pads independently secured to the lower extremity of said strip by passing their inner ends through said triangular shaped opening and then folding them back and stitching them to the bodies of their respective pads, hose supporter webbings carried by vsaid pads, and a Waistband and buckle secured to the outer ends of said pads whereby the device may be secured around the waist of the wearer, the length of said strip being such that when it is in position on a corset said pads will be suspended immediately in front of the lower central portion of the hypogastric region of the abdomen.
In testimony whereof I affix my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS P. TAYLOR. WVitnesses F. W. S ITH, Jr., M. T. LONGDEN.
