APPLIOATION FILED NOV.' Z9, 1907.

HENRY E. KNAUST, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
B OX-LID.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 10, 1908.
Application led November 29, 1907. Serial No. 404,403.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY E. KNAUST, a citizen of the United States, and resident of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Lids, of which the following is a specilication containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to a lid or cover for receptacles, such as boxes or cases for containing bottles and the like, my object being to provide a simple, inexpensive lid which forms a temporary cover for a box or the like, and which lid or cover is easily shifted from one position to another, and which may be readily fastened while in a closed position se that the bottles-or contents of the box are held therein, even though the box be upset while being handled or in transit.
To the above purposes, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a plan view of a box of my improved construction, with parts thereof broken away in order to more clearly illustrate the same; Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. l; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of the corner of a box equipped with my improved lid, or cover; Fig. t is an enlarged detail view taken on the line 4:-4 of Fig. l.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings z-l designates the body of the box, which is of ordinary construction, and provided with the rack or partitions 2, which divide the interior of the box into compartments, which receive the bottles, or like containers, and which partitions are usually located some little distance below the top of the box.
3 designates the lids or covers for the box, which are provided in their top sides with grooves 4, and seated in the outer ends of these grooves are plates 5, the outer ends of which terminate in hooks 6. Seated in the inner faces of the side walls of the box, adjacent the top thereof, are staples 7, which are so positioned as to be engaged by the hooks 6 when the lids are closed and in ahorizontal plane. Fixed to the inner faces of the end walls of the box are cleats 8, on which the ends of the lids 3 rest when said lids are closed; and arranged for rotation in the centers of the cleats are the vertically disposed keepers 9, the upper ends of which are adapted to engage on top of the adjacent inner edges of the lids to latch and hold the same when closed. Spaces, such as 10, are formed between the ends of the cleats and the side walls of the box, which spaces accommodate the lids 3 when the same are shifted into vertical positions adjacent the side walls of the box.
l/Vhen the lids of the box are open, they are vertically disposed adjacent the side walls of the box, with the outer edges resting on top of the partitions 2; and after the box has been filled with the bottles, or like containers, the lids are moved vertically upward, during which time their ends pass through the spaces l0.
Then the lids have been elevated to such a degree as that the hooks 6 engage the staples 7, said lids are swung into horizontal planes, with their ends resting on the cleats 8, after which the keepers 9 are rotated so as to bring their upper ends on top of the ends of the lids, and thus the box is closed.
Box lids of my improved construction are simple, inexpensive, easily operated, offer protection to the contents of the box, and prevent the dislodgment of said contents in case the box is upset.
I claim The combination with a box of a pair of lids adapted to combine to form a cover for the box, in the tops of which lids are formed transverse grooves, hooks seated in the outer ends of said grooves, staples seated in the sides of the box, with which staples the hooks engage when the lids are closed, cleats fixed to the ends of the box, the ends of which cleats are cut away to permit the lids to move vertically, and keepers journaled in said cleats and adapted to engage over the meeting edges of the lids when the same are closed.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
