Description

G. DARE t vBelg Holder. NG. 9o44. Patented May 25,1869.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
GEORGE DARE, OF AUBURN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN BAG-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Leiters Patent N0. 90,344, (lated May 25, 1869.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE DARE, of Auburn, in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which is represented a side elevation of my invention.
The nature of this invention consists in providing a serrated vertical bar or standard with a sliding cross-bar, to one end of which is attached a holder or ring for holding an adjustable funnel-shaped vessel or month, and furnished on its opposite portion with a metal bar bent so as to engage with the serrations on the vertical bar or standard, the outer end of said metal bar acting as a lever for operating it, the object of the above arrangement being designed to furnish a cheap and simple bag-holder.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe it.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a vertical bar, supported on a block or footpiece, a, and provided on one Side with serrations extending nearly its entire length. B designates a horizontal bar, provided at its center with a slot, through which passes the standard or bar A. This bar is furnished at one end with a ring or receiver, b, into which its an adjustable funnel-shaped device or mouthpiece, O, which is supplied on its upper surface, below the ring b of bar B, with projections c c, which are designed to keep the said mouth firmly in place in the ring b, and may be removed therefrom by turning the inouthpiece around until one of the projections c comes in contact with a recess or slot in the ring, allowing said mouth-piece to be lifted ont. To the neck or lower part of C are secured hooks c c', for holding the bag thereon while being filled.
D is a metal bar pivoted in a slot in the bar B at the point w. This bar is formed near its center with a loop, bywhich it is pivoted, and from which, on the side next to the bar A, it is made to extend downward, so as to engage with the serrations on the b ar A when it is desired to raise or lower the mouth-piece O in order to adapt it to diiferent-sized bags. The part of said metal bar on the opposite side of the loop is made to extend out nearly parallel with the under side of bar B, and acts as a lever for operating its lower portion.
d is a small metal bar, secured at its inner end in the slot in which the bar or lever D is pivoted, by means of a spiral spring, dl, and provided at its lower end with a knob, d2, which presses against the upper side of the outer portion of bar D, in order to hold its lower portion in the serrations on the vertical bar or standard A.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The horizontal sliding bar B, provided at its outer end with the ring or holder b, and furnished on its lower opposite side with the bar D, acting as a pawl and lever, and springbar d and serrated bar or standard A, constructed, arranged, and operated substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my si gnature in presence of two witnesses.
WM. F. DEAN, HORACE T. Cook.
