To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LAUGE JENSEN, a citizen of the- United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to folding beds of that class which are generally known as camp beds, and which are designed to provide a bed or cot for one person although, of course, the device is capable of being manufactured in various sizes.

The objects of the invention are to construct a device of this character which may be easily and quickly collapsed or extended for use, as occasion may require.

A further object is to so construct the device that, when collapsed, it may be utilized as a seat or settee, occupying but little space and capable of being accommodated in a corner or spare space which may not otherwise readily be utilized.

Further objects of the invention are to simplify and improve the construction and operation of this class of devices.

With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of theinvention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention; it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the invention may be resorted to when desired.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the improved bed folded or collapsed. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontalsectional detail view taken adjacent to one edge of the canvas or flexible fabric, which constitutes the bed-bottom. Fig. 4 is a side elevation showing the bed extended and ready for use. Fig. 5 is a top plan view showing the bed extended and with a portion of the flexible bottom removed to expose the subjacent construction.

Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.

The sides of the improved bed are composed of two frames A, A of lazytongs construction; that is to say, each of said frames is composed of a plurality of pairs of bars 5, 5, which are pivotally connected together, intermediate their ends, by means of pins, bolts or rivets 6, 6, which latter are equipped with washers 7 intermediate the bars 5, 5, frictional contact between which will thus in a large measure be obviated. The pairs of bars 5, 5 are pivotally connected with adj acent or proximate pairs by means of pins, bolts or rivets 8 and 9 adjacent to their upper and lower ends; said pivotal members being provided with washers 7 interposed between the members 5, 5 connected thereby for the purpose of spacing, and preventing frictional contact between said members.

The side frames A, A are spaced and connected adjacent to their up er ends by the head-rail 10 and the foot-rail 11 which consist of bars of suitable length secured adja cent to the upper ends of end-members of the side frames; the head-rail 10 being disposed at the u per extremities of said end-members, while t e foot-rail 11 is located a short distance below the upper extremities of the endmembers connected thereby, as will be best seen in Fig. 2 of the drawings; said side frames are spaced or connected a short distance above their lower ends by bars 12 and 13 disposed respectively at the head and foot ends of the bed, and also by a plurality of bars 14 which are disposed intermediate the ends. The construction is furthermore reinforced by a plurality of bars 15 connecting the side frames A, A and disposed adjacent to the pivotal members 6, whereby the pairs of bars 5, 5 are pivotally connected intermediate their ends. The frame thus constructed is one which, while light, is possessed of great strength and durability, and which may be very easily and quickly folded or collapsed to the condition illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, or extended for use, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5. This frame is provided with a flexible cover C which constitutes the bed-bottom and which may be constructed of canvas or similar textile material; the quality known as duck bein preferred on account of its superior strengtIi and durability, as well as its tendency to retain creases or folds formed therein, thus facilitating the collapsing of the bed. The cover C is secured by means of fastening members, such as rivets 16 upon the head and foot rails 10, 11, and it is attached to the side frames A, A, adjacent to -when the bed-frame is extended and the weight of the body of a person is placed u on the flexible bottom, the tendency of the atter to sag will be counteracted by the tendency of the sides of the frame to expand, thus stretching the flexible bottom, and imparting to the latter a degree of resiliency which will be found very grateful and comforting to the occupant.

Connected with the upper edge of the head rail 10 by means of hinges 18 is a frame 19, which is upholstered to form a head-rest when the bed is extended for use, and a seat when the bed is collapsed; the upholsterin being composed of suitable stuffing materia 20 provided upon opposite sides with flexible covering material, as shown at 21, 22. The frame 19 is provided on that side which isupermost when the device is collapsed with andles 23, which, if desired, may be made sufficiently large to constitute arm-rests the opposite or under side of the seat is connect ed with the side frames A, A by means of flexible braces 24 which serve to support the frame 19 when utilized as a head-rest, as will be clearly seen in Figs. 4 and 5. When the device is folded or collapsed as seen in Figs. 1 and 2, the frame 19, now constituting the seat, may be secured by hooks or fastening members 25 pivoted upon the side frames A and engaging eyes or staples 26 upon the under side of the seat. By this simple means the device may be securely locked and retained in a collapsed or closed condition. A

of the foot-rail 11. by means of hinges 28 which, owing to the fact that the foot-rail 11 is located at a distance below the upper ex tremities of the side-members of the bed frame with which it is connected, will enable said foot-rest to be folded beneath the seatframe 19 when the device is collapsed, as clearly seen in Fig. 2.

From the foregoing descri tion taken in connection with the drawings ereto annexed the operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood. The im proved folding bed is simple in construction, and may be manufactured and marketed at a very moderate expense. When collapsed or folded the device occupies but little space, and it may be conveniently stored and ship ed; and in addition to its utility as a bed it affords a convenient seat which may be placed in an out-of-the-way corner not otherwise available for use.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:

In a folding bed, a frame comprising side members composed of lazytong's levers and rails or bars spacing and connecting said side members, a flexible cover secured upon said frame, an upholstered frame hinged upon a spacing and connecting rail at the head end and at the upper extremities of the ends of the side members of the frame, and a footrest hinged upon a spacing and connecting rail at the foot end and below the upper extremities of the side-members of the frame and adapted to be folded beneath the upholstered frame when the bed is colla sed.
