Description

UNITED %TATE% PATENT OFFIQE. V
SHELDON CARY, OF YE\V YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO CARY MANUFAOTURING COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
BALE-TIE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 3, 1908'.
Application filed Mayfi, 1904. Serial No. 206,614.
To all whom it may. concern:
Be it known that I, SHELDON OARY, a citi zen of the United States, residing in New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Bale-Tie, of which the following is a specifichtion.
My'inventionrelates to an improved bale tie for use particularly on bolts or rolls of cloth, though it will be obvious that it is adapted for various other similar uses.
The bale tie is so constructed that when the two members constituting the buckle of the tie are used in conjunction with the band they exert a wedging action on each other, thereby being forced together facially. In this way said members exert a gripping action on each other and enable the tie to be drawn very tauth around the bale and held securely in place. i Y
My new tie is simple in construction, easy to make. readily appliedtothe bale, and, in practice, has proven of great utility.
The invention will be understood from the following detailed description thereof, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view of the entire tie; Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof on line 22 Fig. 1, showing the parts relieved from tension; Fig. 3 is a sectional'elevation on the same plane as Fig. 2, showing the parts under tension; Figs. I and 5 show the two members constituting the buckle, and Fig. 6 shows a modifiedform of the invention wherein one member of the buckle is constructed in the formof a wedge. Fig.7 is a transverse view partly in cross section of the modified construction shown in F 6 illustrating the manner of attachlng the ends of the band to the buckle members.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The buckle is composed of two members A and B. The member A in its preferred form 1s made substantially rectangular in shape and is provided with a. slot 5, through the metal is bent upon itself to form lugs or jaws Sand 9 the space between the lugs or.
numbered respectively .10 and 11.
seinbling the tie the end 10 is passed over jaws forming a passage 13 for the end portion of the band, as hereinafter described. In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 5, the members A, B, are preferably stamped up from thin strip steel though it is apparent that they might be made in other ways.
In the drawings the ends of the bandare In asthe top of the member B, and then bent upon itself around the rentrant part 7 and passed outwardly through the slot 6. The end .11 is passed through the passage 13 and beneath member A, then bent upon itself and passed through the slot 5 therein. A
bandof the right length for the purpose intended having been provided, it is slipped around the bale, while the latter is under pressure in the baling press, and member A is placed in proper position so as to rest with one edge within the angular part of member B. T he pressure upon the halo is then re lieved, whereupon the natural expansion of bcrsA, and B. corresponding to the members A'and B in the first form described.
Member 13 differs from member B in that it has not. cut away portion'7, but is bent upon itself, and has an additional slot 12 at the angle of the-bend forming a passage for the band. The member A differs from the member A in that it has no slot, but is made preferably solid and'of tapering form resembling a wedge. If desired, member A may be made of wood or similan material instead of metal. In attaching the'band to member B, the end of the band is first passed through the slot in the angle of the hand. it is'then bent upon itself and passed through the second slot 6 therein, corre spending to the slot 6 in the member B.
The other end of the band is wrapped-around 25 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters member A and'drawn over upon itself and the invention each them together so as said member A is then inserted in the angular part of member B.
In using the second form of the invention one end of the band is attached to member B, in the manner indicated, and the other end placed around the bale, while the latter is under tension in the press, and, said latter end is then connected with member A, as indicated, and-this latter: member allowed to slip into the angular part of member B. When pressure is relieved from the bale, the tension on the band, caused by the tendency of the bale to expand, produces the same wedging action between members A and B as is produced between members A and B.
It will be observed that in both forms of end of the band is securely fastened to its buckle member and that when the parts are placed under tension the ends of the band's, owing to the form of the buckle members, ping and frictional relation, resulting in a very secure tie.
Having described my invention, what I Patent is '1. In an article of the class'described, a coupling member provided with a, down turned portion and a band clamping surface, said. member being provided with a slot adapted to receive the end of a band, a second coupling member to which the endof a band is adapted to be secured, the said second member having a band clamping surface, and an edge adapted to rest within the down turned portion of the first member,- so, that when tension is *exerted u pon the band the said members are brought into coopera' tive relation with each other and a wedging action exerted upon the coupling members and a clamping action upon the band.
2. A; bale tie consisting of two members having opposing clamping faces, said members being provided with means for wedging to bring said faces into clamping positions as the members approach each other, each of said members being provided with a slot whereby the end portions of a band may be respectively connected with said members by first passing a hand between them, and 'then around the end of one member, and then back'and through said slot, and again between said members.
3. A baletie consisting of two members having opposing clamping faces, one of said members also having an inclined turned over end for receiving and wedgingly engaging the other member, and each of said-members being provided with a transverse slot, and said turned over end being provided with a forming a wedge shaped are brought into lap-- member having one passage therethrough whereby the end portions of a band may be respectively 0011- nected vwith said members by first passing the band betweenthem and then around the end of one member, and then back and through said slot and again between said members, one of said end portions also passing through the passage of 'said turned over end.
buckle composed of two members, one of said members being provided with lugs slot adapted to receive the end of a band, the second member also being provided with t. In an article of the class described, a
socket and with a a slot adapted to receive the end of a band,
said second member being adapted to rest on the face of the first menibenwith one of its edges between said faces and aforesaid lugs, and in wedging engagement therewith, the said parts so cooperating v is placed upon the band the buckle members exert a wedging action upon each other and a clamping action upon the band. 1 5. In an article of the class described, a
edge thereof bent towards itself so as to form an angle,- means for attaching a band to said member, a second member adapted to rest'within the angle of the first member, means for attaching a band to said second member, the coiiperative relation between the said members being such that when tension is placed upon the band said members exerta wedging action on each other and a clamping band.
6. In an article of the class described, a' coupling member provided turned'portion, said member being provided with a slot, the end of a band passlng over the face of said member and bent upon itself and extending through the, slot in said member, a second coupling member provided with a slot, he end-of a band passing over the lower face of said member, said-band being -also bent upon itself, the said second member having one edge adapted to rest within the down turned portion of member so that when tension is exerted upon the band the said members are'brought into cooperative relation with each other and a wedging action exerted 'upon the members and the band. In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
