a citizen of the United States, residingin Newark, New Jersey, have invented a cer tain'new and useful. Improvement in Ma chines for 'Grinding'Teeth of Gear-Wheels,
- of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvementsin A machines for grinding gears having involute 19' or other shaped teeth, and particularly is of use for grinding gears of very hard material;
The objects of the invention are to render" it possible to grind teeth of wheels made of exceedingly hard materiahto make the bpera-tion take as little time as possible, and .to render it possible'to grind teeth of the true involute shape desired.- Other improvements reside in the shape of the grinder mused, which permits finer teeth being ground,

The machine comprises a base-*1, *which is hollow, preferably. of cast iron. This. base has a cylindrical extension 2, within whieh is mounted the reciprocating support 3,
which carries'the'wheel'tobe ground, and which is reciprocated up and down during the grinding operation. The frame hasan extension 4 (see Fig. 5) which is closed by a man-hole cover 5. In the extension 4 of the frame 1, are two vertical shafts 15 and 16. The shaft 15 is mounted-ina bearing 17 on the support 3, and a bearing 18 at the top of the extension 4. The shaft 16 is mounted in bearings 19 I I and 20 in the bottom and top of'the extension 4. The shaft1'5 is rotated by means of the shaft 6 throughthe agency of a worm 21, and worm; wheel 22, the first being ca'r ried by the shaft 6 and the secondby the. shaft 15. Theproportion of reduction may be varied asoccasions require, the' illustration showing it to be a reduction of about 1 in 36; in other words, the shaft 15 will-be rotated once to every 36 times the shaft 6 is turned. - The shaft 15 lies within the worm wheel-and hub, and is' rotated thereby by means of a feather 15. The shaft 15 carries a cam 23. This cam is shown in Fig. 7, to be formed .inthe shape of a spiral for nearly the entire circumference of the cam, the two ends of the spiral being connected together by a sharp shoulder. This cam serves to oscillate the shaft 16 through the agency of an arm 24, which carries a stud 25 which engages with the cam slot. The shaft 15 actuates the locking and indexing mechanism for holding the wheel in position while the tooth is being ground, and for advancing it the space ofa roothso as. to present it in po- I sition forgrinding a new tooth. A very important part of the invention resides in making the grinder of sucha type that'it engages at its'edge with the tooth being ground, in -contradistinction from engagement with one face or a corner, which is the case in previousforms-of machines.
Among the advantages which reside-in having the grinder engage at its periphery are that it can grindfiner teeth, as the grinderc'an-be thinner than one which engages with one face. Another advantageis that-as the grinder wears it merely decreases in diameter and not in thickness.
