FABTENING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 3, 1908.
Application led March 19, 1908. Serial No. 421,997.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALVIN CARROLL GOD- DARD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, Long Island city, borou h of Queens, in the county of Queens an State of New York, have invented a new and Im roved Fastening Device, of which the folllowing is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to metallic door casings, base boards, chair rails and the like,
and its object is to provide a new and improved fastening device for conveniently and securely fastening the metallic parts in position without the use of screws, nails and the like and without showing the fastening means exteriorly. Y
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a art of this specification, in which similar c aracters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a sectional lan view of the im rovement, applied to t e trim of a metal ic door casing; Fig. 2 is a sectional face view of the improvement, on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 Fig. 3 is a similar view of the same, showing the parts disengaged; Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view of the improvement, showing the parts partly engaged', Fig. 5 is a transverse section of the improvement applied to a base board; and Fig. 6 is a transverse section of the improvement applied to a chair rail.
Each of the trims A for the door casing B, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4, is formed of a single piece of sheet metal bent into the de sired cross sectional form and terminating at the sides in inwardly extending flanges A', A", ada ted to be engaged b the offset ends C', D of) horizontally disposeclfastenin members C, D, of which the member C is ed to the casing B, while the other fastening member D is provided with an elongated slot D, through which extends screws, rivets or the like E, held on the casing B, so that the member D is free to slide hor1zontally in the direction of its len th and transversel of the fastening members C and D are preferably arranged one alon side the other and two or more such sets of astening members may be used, according to the len th of the trim or other article. The non-o set terminal Ds of the slidable member D is approximatel flush with the terminal of the offset end when placing the trim A in position (see Fi s. 3 and 4) that is, sliding the flange A2 un er the offset end D andI engaging the inner edge of the flange A with the terminal D. Now by the operator pushing the trim sidewise in the direction of the arrow a the flan e A slides under the offset end C of the fixe fastening member C, and at the same time the flange A pushes the slidable fastening member along so that the offset end D remains in engagement with the flan e A3 and the trim is astened in place by the anges A', A2 bein enga ed b the offset ends C', D of the fixe and s idab e fastening members C and D.
In order to fasten a metallic base Iboard F in position on the wall G, as shown in Fi 5, or a chair rail H to the wall I, use is ma e of the fixed and slidable fastening members C and D, engaging flanges F', F and H', H2 on the said base board F and chair rail H, the same as above described in reference to the door casing trim, the only difference being that the fastenin members C and D are now disposed verticalIy and the member D slides downward when pushing the base board F or the chair rail H in place.
The fastening members C and D are held on furring strips G and I forming part of the walls G and I.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A fastenin device for base boards, trims and like articles, having interior flanges, comprising a fixed fastenin member and a sliding fastening member, t e fixed member enga ing one flange and the latter engaging the s idmg member and pushing the same into engagement with the other flange.
2. In combination, a metallic base board, trim and like article, having flan es extending towards each other, a fixe fastening member, and a slidable fastening member, one of thesaid flanges passin under thefxed member and engagmg the sli able member to shift the latter into engagement with the other flange.
3. A fastening for metallic base boards,
trims and like articles, comprising e. fixed n testimony whereof I have signed my member having an oi'set end, and e shdable neme to this specification in the presence of member having an ofset end, the o'set ends two subscribin witnesses.
