EMBROIDE RING-M CHINE Speciication of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 3, 1908.
Application filed January 24, 1903. Serial No. 418,316.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. GROEBLI, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful 1mprovements in EmbroideringMachines, of which the following is a specification.
It is customary in embroidering machines to employ a double set of borers which ierce the fabric carried upon the tambour rame and consists of a set which is provided with cutting edges for cutting different shaped holes in the fabric where the design requires; and a second set of lain borers which merely pierce the finishe or stitched hole to sha e 1t, the latter sometimes being called stup els. In such machines the various sets of borers are arranged in numbers along carrying bars and one set is ada ted to be moved into operative position an operated while the other remains idle, and both of which remain out of operative posif tion when not performing their functions. Heretofore such devices have been controlled by hand by an operator or have been controlled automatically by the jacquard and it is to the latter class of machines that my present invention belongs.
The objects of my improvements is to roduce a more perfectly operated device w iich may be connected with an embroidering machine in a less cumbersome and more positive Vacting manner and which may be utilized upon machines to whichl former devices are not adapted.
The device comprises mechanism for connecting the actuating mechanism with either set 4ofbprers, means for operating the set thus connected and mechanism for withdrawing the borers from their operative position, all of which are automatically controlled by the pattern device.
The various details of one embodiment of and the advantages thereof will `appear more fully hereinafter.
In the drawings forming a part of this application, Figure l is a front elevation of a portion of an embroidering machine showing my improved mechanism, Fig. 2 is a side elevationthereoLFig. 3 is an enlarged view of a portion of Fig. 2, showing the parts in a different osition, Fig. 4 is a plan view, Fig; 5 is ran e arged side elevation of portions of the mechanism, i Figa-6 and. v2 argan elevation and plan view respectively of the shaft operating and ositioning lever, Fig. 8 is a cross section ta en on the line 8-8 `of Fig. 7 and partly broken away, Fig. 9 is an elevation of a gear and cam for operating the mechanism, Fig. 10 is a cross section taken on the line 10-10 of Fig. 9, Fig. 11 is a cross section taken on the line 11-11 of Fig. 10, and' Fig. 12 is a cross section taken on the line 12-12 of Fig. 2.
By reference to Figs. 1 and 4 it willbe seen that there are two sets of borers 1 and which are mounted on rods 3 and 4 respectively that extend len thwise of the embroidery machine, andin the form of the machine to which myinvention is best adapted these sets of borers are arranged one above the other andv below the needles, where, when lthe are moved -into operative osition they wllly'notbe liable to inure the ands of the o erator while atten ing to the threads.
ese two borer rods are connected upon lateral shafts 5 and 6 which move longitudinally in journals 7 for the purpose of moving the borers in and out for the purpose of boring the fabric wherever the design re The shafts 5 and 6 are duplicated at t 1e opposite end ofthe machine and at various intermediate points so as to make the movement of the borer rods uniform throughout. The shafts may have oil grooves as shown. For the urpose of directly operating the several sha ts 5 and 6 l provide shafts 8 which are mounted in suitable bearings and extend longitudinally of the machine near the outer ends of the shafts 5' and G. The shafts 5am! 6 are each provided with engaging members, 9 and 10 secured thereto, and each of the latter is provided with two fingers 11 and 1:2
projecting laterally of the shafts and (i and the lingers 12 are slightly gers 11 for the ur ose which will appear hereafter. The s ia ts 8 are provided with a plurality of cranks for reciprocating the shafts 5 and L to operate either set of horers. The crank 13 has a roller 14 which moves int o engagement with the arms on the member E) while the oppositely disposed roller 1.6 on the crank 15 moves into engagement with the .tingers' on the member I0. When the shaft 8 is in the position shown in Fig. 4 the crank uires,
longer than the iin- F NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNORNTO THE KURSHEEDT MANUFACTURING COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
13 reciprocates' the shaft 5 and with it the u AEer set of borers and the crank l5 movesid y ack and Vforth and as it only engages wit when gear l19 to which anI arm 'which it .operates the arm Vbring the gear the finger 12 it keeps the shaft 6 and lower set of borers out ol operative position. When the shaft 8 is moved longitudinally by mech anism to be explained, the roller 14 will cease to operate the shaft 5 and the roller 16 will be moved into engagement with the finger 11 when the shaft 6 and lower set of borers will be reci procatcd while the upper ones remain idle and out of operative position. The shiftingr of shaft 8 as well as other actions are all controlled by the pattern mechanism as will appear. 1
Referring now to the mechanism connected directly with the jacquard for thc purpose of o erating the various movements, it Will e seen that some of the parts are similar to that 'shown in my Letters Patent No. 717843. A shaft 17 is provided with a small gear 18 which meshes with gear 20 is fulcrumed to move 19 rotates. Surrounding 'the shaft 17 (see Figs. 1() and 11) is a reciproeating member 21 which carries oppositely disposed gear teeth 22 and 23 for tie purpose of mutilatingi the gear l9alternately on opposite sides. ,An arm 24 upon the lever 25 which rocks at 26en0ages the reciprocatin member 21 when tic latter is in its raisecf position, to lck the ear 19 from rotating and when the mutilating member moves to its lower position shown in Fig. 11 it will be freeto ass the arm 24 and as the second arm 27 will be rocked by a spring and operate an alarm to4 signify that t e borers are being placed into 'operative position, the same as 1n my issue 4patent referred to. The reciprocatlon of the mutilating member 21 is controlled by an arm 29 operated by the jacquard, which engages a pin 30 on the mutilatm member the patent. he jacquard and the Wa 1n 29 is fully illustrated and described in Fatent No. 717843 to which cro'ss reference is here made. When the mutilating member i. is thrown into its lower position. shown in Fig. 11 it will set the ears 18 and 19 intoengagement when the iiitter will be revolved one half revolu tion when the opposite mutilation will to a stop until a repeated operation of the mutilatmg member. Similar to In prior patent there is a earn 31 which w-i l rockV the lever 32. when the roller- 34 is thrown into en agement Withrthe cam by the jacquard, an( has 'an adjustable connection 35 with'the lever 32.
B means of the rods' 20 and 33 the settin of .t`l7ie`borers into o erative position am their action is controllldd as Vwill now appear. The u per end of the rod 20`is fulcrumed to a cran 36 upon a shaft 37 whereby the roek- 4ing of shaft 37 by the rod crank 38 on the opposite en'd. 38 is provided with a reversely The crank curved ansame as 1n my priorrock the rod 38 whichA 20 will rock a` nular cam 39 which serves a double purpose. It might bc noted here that the borcrs and operatingl shaft 8 are duplicated as is customary on embroidering machines, one set bein above thc other the saine as thc need es. A vertically disposed connectingr rod 4() is connected at its opposite ends to levers 41 on short shafts 42, and on these short shafts are cranks 43 which straddle the shafts 8 between collars 44 on the latter and when the cranks 43 are rocked the shafts 8 will be simultaneously reciprocated in either direction for the purpose of throwingr one set of borers into action andthe other ou t.
The connecting rod 40 is provided with an arm 45 on which there is a pin 46 that moves in the annular cam 39 and through this connection the rod 40 is moved vertically to set the shafts 8. Owing to the shape of the annular' cam the rod 40 'is locked in its respective positions. A bell crank lever which rocks on the shaft 47 has an upward arm 48, provided with a pin 50 that also moves in the annular cam and an arm 49 which is fulcrumed to a rod 51.
A vertically disposed reciprocating 1nember 52 is connected so as to simultaneously rock the 4shafts 8 to o This member 52 is spending racks 53 upper and lower) which mesh with sectors 54 on the ends of theshafts 8. so that as the member52 moves u and down the shafts 8 will be rocked a portion of a revolution through this rack and pinion movement. The member 52 is itself operated throu h the action of the rod 35.A As one set of orers is rovided with cutting edges they must be sffarpencd from time to time and doing so the length of the borers is decreased, so that the shafts 8 must be so adjusted that when the borers which have become shortened are operated their bar must be thrown farther in, in order to pro erly bore the fabric and still not change tige remaining borers which do not change to any appreciable extent in length. Thisad- 'ustability is provided for in the connection` etween the rod 33 and-reciprocating member 52; and is as follows: A shaft 55 is supported upon the frame of the machine by a racket 56 and has a crank 57, which, by engagement in an aperture in the' late 57 on the member 52 reci rocates the atter when the shaft 55 is roc ed. There is a double connection between the shaft 55 and operatlng rod- 33 one of which is loose u on the Jshaft and the other fixed so that 'by e an'ging the position of these connecting mcans'with relation to cach other, the extent of reciprocation ofthe member 52 and through its connections the reciprocation of the borers may be advanced so as to make u for the decreased length Qf one set of orers. This adjustment is such as to affect only one set crate the borers. rovn ed with two corre-' 9 each 4alternate.swinging of the cam lock of borers and is such that when the normal or unshortened boreis are thrown into operation the adjustment just referred to will be thrown out, and this change is effected through a connectionwith the jacquard as will a pear.
Re crence is here had more particularly to Figs. 6, 7 and 8. A lever 59 is fulcrumed at `to a pin 61 running crosswise at the end of the rod 33 and the o )posito end 62 of this lever is U shaped and loosely sleeved upon the shaft 55. A two pieced jointed lever 63, straddles the lever 59 and is fnlcrulned thereto upon a pin 64, with ono end outside and the other inside. The end 65 is rocked hy the arm 5l, the connections of which have already been described. Another lever 66 is fast upon the shaft 55 and runs generally parallel with the lever 59. Means are provided whereby the rocking of' lever 63 will set or alter the position of lever 66 and through the various connections, the shafts 8. The end 67 of lever 63 is provided with teeth 68which mesh with teeth 69 on a roeking member 70 which rocks upon the pin 6l of the rod 33. This member 70 which 1 will referably call a locking cam, is provided witha circular faced outer end71 and pro- 'ections 72. The lever 66 is rovided with lateral extensions 73. On e u per one there is a stationary cam toe 74 iaving a slanting inner surface 75, and a recess 76 at the bottom of the cam toe to receive one of' the (projections 72. '*Another toe 77 is secure to the other )rejection 73 in a reverse position and is simi ar to the first one exce t that it is adjustable onthe extension 73, y means of the slot 78 and screw 7,9 connection. `When the cam toes are in the position shown in Fig. 8 the yrocking of lever 63 and the connected arts will cause no change iny .the position o the lever 66.
If however, the cam toe 77 is moved toward the lever 66 through its adjustable connection, thc swinging of the cam block 70 will cause the surface 71 `thereofto engage the inclined surface 75 of cam toe 77 revious to what it woulldhave and will rock t e lever 66 downwardly in relation to the lever'- 59, and through its con-l nections will move the member 52 upwardly and finally turn the shafts'S. Whenti le-t ver 66 is thus ad`usteo the movement of the arm v33 will be t ve same in extent as before so that the irockingof shaft 55 and the reciprocation of oneset of borers will be the same distance as before but the borer` rod will start from another, or advanced posi-tion. When the lever 63 is rocked in thereverse direction the cam 7() will be thrown over and upon engaging with the cam. toe 74 will return the lever 66 to its former position. l
t 1e one set of borers is advanced to make up for their shortening due to the sharpening. As was explained one set of borers does not change in length so that the leverV 66is returned toi its normal position when such set oi' borcrs is being operated. AsV will be seen, the projections 72 engage in the recesses 76 in either position of the cam lock, thus locking the rod 33 and lever 66 and making them move together. One of the most important features of this connection is that the shifting of the position of the lover 66 is effected automatically whenever the power is shifted from one set of borers to the other.
llaving described the details of construction ol my improved device l will now describe their operation, beginning with the action ol the jacquard. The arm 29 is moved down by the action oll the jacquard, carryinff the pin 3() and the mutilating member, untl the teeth enga fe the gear 18 when the latter will revolve tile gear 19 until the opposite mutilated side of the gear 19 comes opposite the gear 18 when the latter will continue to move idly. The half revolutionv of the gea-r 19 moves the rod 20 upwardly, causing the shalt 37 and crank 38 to rock. This will move the connecting rod 4U downwardlyb reason of the connection, of the latter throu li. the annular cam, when the levers 41 willbe rocked. This causes the shafts 42 to rock to the left (Fig. 2) moving the shafts 8 longitudinally until the roller 16 engages the fingers 11, when the roller 14 will be free of the linger 11 on the shaft 5. When the shafts 8 are rocked in this new position the lower set of borers will be operated instead of the upper. The movement of the annular oam'39 also rocks the bellcrank lever. through the enageinent of zthe arm 48 therewith, causing t 1e rod 51 to 'ove downwardly and rockthe lever 63. Th s will turn the cam look 70 and throw it into the position shown in Figs. 6 and 8. from the center of lever 66 as the toe 74 there will be no cha e in the position of lever 66. If, however, itis nearer, then the lever 66 willbe no'ved downwardl and shaft 55 will be turned slightly be'fore t e rod begins to operate and through .the .connections the member 52 will bes'ligh'tly raised and the rack and pinion engagements with shafts -8 will partly rock the latter and cause whichever set ol' borers is in operation (in: the present descri tion the upper) to be advanced to make up or the decreased, length of the cutting borers. When the cam lockV has been moved as just described, the end 72 willengage in recess 76 'on the lower cam shoe and causajhc lever 66 to rock with the rod '33. The rts are now set for action. The .pin 34 w,' lglnow be thrown into the c'am 3 l` by the actie "ol' the jacquard when the level'. 32 will rook; "l" oving the rod 33 up and down. This @paths lever 66 to rock shaft 55, the cranlto reciprocate the member 52 and through the rack and pinion connection, the shafts 8, to operate the borers. This will continue until the pin 34 is withdrawn from the cam 31, which will be at the position shown in Fig. l 1. The mechanism by which the bowl or pin 34 is thrown into and out of engagement with the cam 31 is fully illustrated and described in mly ending application numbered 358736, fi ed) February 21st, 1907, to which .cross reference is made. The next o eration. may require that the upper borers e used, and in this event the lever 29 will be moved downwardly by the jacquard as before and the mutilating member on the gear 19 will be reciprocated as before and the" gears 18 and 19 will engage and the latter will be revolvedV a half revolution. As the rod 2() was left at the top in its previous action it wi lnow move downwardly and move shaft 31j in a reverse direction to the previous movement. .This 'will reverse the osition of the connecting rod 40 and throng the various connections the shafts 4.8 will be moved longitudinally and reverse the connections of the cranks 13 and 1 5 to throw in the Vset .of borers which were previously idle. At the Sametime the bellcrank lever will be rocked bygthe annular cam, and through the rod 51' and lever 63- the locking cam 70 will be rocked vinto engagement with the am toe 74 and the leer 66 will be returner to its rovioius position and theborers will llie in their; proper positions.
The rocking of t e 4rod 33, iever 66 ,and reciprocation. of mein er 52 then begins as before and the set ofV borers which werepreviously idle are o erated. I
It will e obvious from the foregoing that the setting of either set of borer's into oper'- ative position isl directly controlled Aby Vthe jacquard, adjustment o the borersfor decrease in their lengthis lrovided for, and the o eration of theborers is controlled throu h t e jacquard, `so as to be. operated after t 1ei borers areset. This isral'so accomplishedin, a way that insurespositive and automatic action withas few parts as possbleand Without adding clumsy parts to an already complicatedmachine. I
The shifting of the borer operating shaft tov alternately throw the differentl sets of borers' into'action effects the necessary change in a very simple wa 'without depreeiatmg the positivenessv of t 1e operating' arts.
