To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, HA-nvn R. 'S'ruanr, a citizen of the United States, residing" at Wheeling, in the county of Qhio'andState of West Virginia, have invented certain: new and useful Improvements in Magnets for Telegraphones, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to tele and has special reference to the e ectromagnet which is used for recording and reproducing the speech, message or signal.
- the electromagnet is an In the well known form of telegraphone, vordinary coil wound upon a solid iron core, presented to the steel wire or otherrecording body. The frictional contact between a the pole which is of soft iron and the recording body results in rapid wear of the pole piece which requires frequent renewals. It has heretofore been proposed also to substitute for the ordinary type of electromagnet a solenoid-through the axis of which the recording body in the form of a wire moves. So far as known to me, however, the solenoid has not been practically used in connection with the telegraphone, the reason bein that a number of diificulties are encountere particularly in that it is diflicult t'o concenthe lines of force upon the recording body. The present invention is designed to overcome some of these dificulties, and also to prevent undue wear of those parts of the magnet which come in contact with the traveling wire. My invention consists in so shaping the magnetic circuitof the solenoid that the lines of force thereof will be concentrated upon the wire, and in'the provision of a bearing composed of refractory matei '3 is an end elevation; Fig. 4e
rial, such as a ewel, interposed in such a way as to revent the wire from running in contact wit the soft iron parts of the magnet.
In the accompanyingdrawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation of one form of my; 1nven+ tion; Fig. 2 is'a sectional view thereof; Fig. is a sectional view of another form of my invention; and Fig. 5 is an end elevation thereof.
In the form of my invention illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, lfindicates a cylindrical block of. non-magnetic material, provided .with a circumferential deep and narrowgroove formlnga windlng space for an elec- Channels 3 are provided forthe tric coil 2.

and may fixed to any partof the block 1 (not, however, shown'in the drawing), or to any other point where the terminals are ically fixed. At the axis of-th'e cylindrical block there a longitudinal passage 4i, through which the recording wire otthe telegraphone, indicated by the dotted line-in Fig. 2, passes. This cylindrical block 15'111' efiect a spool which together with the coil ,2 constitutes an ordinary solenoid, the magllnorder, however, to conand provide a magnetic-circuit of. comparatively low're-i luctanee, I provide the soft iron disk 5, which hastwo spring clips 6, by means of'which it can he slipped over one end of the block 1 andheld in pos'tion thereon. This disk has a central hole 7, in line with the passa e 4: ofthe block to accommodate the recor ing wire. The head of the spool against which the disk is placed is made as thin as possible so as to bring the disk close to the winding and thus shorten the magnetic circuit. The lines of force are thereby concentrated upon that part of the wire which is inclosed in the opening 7 of the disk. In this construction, the blockl may be made of tough or wear-resistive material so that the friction of the wire moving through the axial passage will not result 1n. cutting into the disk, the gear being taken by the block inside of the isk.
In Figs. 4 and 5, the preferred form of through the air.
ch may be comparatively longer, has two soft iron heads 8 and 9, corresponding to the disk 5in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, and these heads instead ,of being flat disks are shaped to enter the interior space ofthe winding, the two disks approachingeach other until they are separated by only a short space at the center of. the winding. In this separatin space a small collar of brass, or a perforate jewel '10, is inserted and held in an axial position. The opening in the jewel is in line s in the disks 8 and 9 to form the passage tor the moving recording wire, the opening in the jewel being of slightly less diameter than those in the disks prevent contact between the wire and the soft iron. In this construction,
solenoid,-wh
so as to entirely portion or the wire within. the passage; In
lead to binding posts,
to be mechannetic circuit of which would erdinarilybe my invention is illustrated. In this case the I either of the constructions herein described the coil space may receive one or more windings for the usual purposes of recording, reproducing and erasing. the record.
."What I claim, is:.
1. In 'a tele raphone,a recordin in the form or a solenoid, aracer medium adapted to move through the solenoid, and
I iron masses entering the solenoid'at eachend in the form of a solenoid in combination with arecording wire passing axially through the same, and a bearing r said wire composed of Wear-resistive material and located adjacent to the solenoid.
4. In a telegraphone, a recordingmagnet in the form of a solenoid-in combination with a recording wire passing axially through the same, and a bearing for said wire composedof'wear-resistive material and located inside the solenoid.
5, In a-telegraphone, an electromagnet in the form of a solenoid, a partof whose mag- -heing provided with an opening through which therecording' body passes, and a bearing of wear-resistive material for the wire.
' 6. In a telegraphone, an electromagnet in the form of a solenoid provided with axially a part of the rna etic circuit of the solenoi disks.
shaped to enter the interior space of the solenoid winding, and a perforatedjewelconfined axially between said heads. r In witness whereof, I subscribe my signa-' ture, in the presence of two'witnesses. j
Han-"yr nsr Witnesses 5 netic circuit. is formed of iron, said iron part and a bearing 0 wear-resistive material for. the recording wire and located between sa d arranged iron disks at each end constituti 7. In a telegraphone, electreinagnet in theform of a solenoid having; iron heads
