To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY Fonon, subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Rokkszilard-utca 20, Budapest, Kingdom of Austria-Hungary, have invented certain new and useful Apparatus for Connecting Conducting and other Wires, of which the following is a description.
This invention relates to im rovements in mechanism for .twisting lappe wires to join the same of that class wherein devices. are provided for holding the lapped wires and wherein devices. are also provided for twistingthe-wires held by said first mentioned devices.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a device of,this general character which will permit of the twisting of the lapped wires in opposite directions or in one direction and in connection with the last mentioned utility of the invention aspecial feature consists in independently and removably mounting the twisting and-holding devices so that the same may be adjusted ticu arly pointed out in and by the appended claims.

Fig. 5, is a sectional view thereof on line a -b of Fig. 4; Fig.6, is a side elevation, partly in section, of one of the holdingdevices detached from the remainder of the mechanismshown in Fig. 4. Fig. 7, is a sectional view on line ab of Fig. 6. Fig. 8, detail view in side elevation of a portion of the twisting device. Fig. 9, is a plan view thereof.
First referring to Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, 1
Next referring to my improved 1nechanism as illustrated in Figs. 4 to 9 inclusive a mounting is provided in the form of a bar 4,
on which the cooperating twisting and hold ing devices are disposed. There is shown two holding devices which are movably or adjustably mounted on said bar and which are provided with means in the form of thumb screws 7 and 8 for locking said holding devices in their adjusted positions. Each of said holding devices consist of standards 5 and 6, provided with openings in their lower portions for receiving the bar 4. At their upper ends said devices are provided with means for gripping the wires and as shown said means consist ofja- ws 9 and 10 which are pivotally united at 14 and are normally held apart from each other by springs 37 interposed between said jaws and seated in suitable recesses formed .therein as clearly. shown in Fig. 6. The lower jaws 10 are apertured at 13 to receive the upper reduced ends of the standards 5 and 6 and screws 15 are inserted in said standards and are provided with heads 16 adapted to engage the lower jaws 10 to retain the sameu-pon said standards. This construction constitutes a lpivtal mounting of the jaws and permits t em to swing or turn to compensate-for shortening of the lapped wires as the result of the twisting operation. Means are provided for clamping the jaws 9 and 10 upon the wires and as shown said means consists of a threaded bolt 11 provided with a winged head 15. m eut with the lower jaw 10 and passes freely through an opening in the upper jaw 9 as will be clearly seen by reference to Fig. 6.
Next referring to the twisting device the same consists, as shown, of a sleeve 24 mounted .upon the rod 4 and provided with a handle 24 by means of which the device may be adjusted on its mounting independently of the holding devices and toward or Said bolt 11 has threaded engagefrom the same. vided and the same are pivotally united with each other at 30 and are normally held apart from each other by a spring 32. The lower jaw 29 is rigidly secured to the worm wheel 25 and the upper jaw.31 is freely movable, A screw 33 has threaded engagement with the lower jaw- 29 and passes freely through jaw 31 and is operated by a rod 35 slidably mounted in a head 3.4 and operated ina well known manner.
It will be readily seen from the foregoing that a unitary mechanism com rising indepenfdently operable and remova 1y mounted devices is provided which is adapted to twist lapped wires in one direction or in op- If it is desired to unite two wires in the manner shown in Fig. 3, the
.twisting device is adjusted to bring the jaws 29 and 31 .to an intermediate position between the holding devices and after the holding and twisting devices have been secured to the wires the crank 23 isoperated to effect the twisting operation shown. As the wires shorten the pivotal mountings of the jaws 9 and 10 permit the same to turn anda'pproach thetwisting device. holding devices are independently adjustable toward and from the twisting device and therefore the mechanism is readily adapted to accommodate a lapped joint of anyprobable length. r If it is desired to twista joint in one direction as shown in Fig. 2, one of the holding devices can be removed and the twisting device can be adjusted to the free extremity of the lapped joint opposite that extremity engaged by the remaining holding device.
