Be it known that I, FRANOIs H. RIoHAnDs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanism for Operating Adjustable Work-Performing Members, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an organization of devices adapted for cooperative association with one or more members each of which may be capable of and upon adjustment is designed for performing work of some description.
The present improvements are closely related to those constituting the subject matter of my ending application Serial No. 134,626, filec fDecember 10, 1902; the subject matter disclosed in this a plication is, however, distinguished thererom by reason of the fact that the present mechanism is adapted for selectively effecting the adjustment of the adjustable members through different distances.
In the drawings accompanying this specification an embodiment of my invention is illustrated, wherein Figure 1 is an elevation with the casing of the mechanism removed and some of the parts shown in vertical sec tion. Fig. 2 is a top view with part of the top plate removed. Fig, 3 is a plan view on a plane between the main and supplemental driving-shafts. Fig. 4 is a vertical section of a portion of the mechanism. Fig. 5 is a detai of lifting fingers and Fig. 6 is a detail of the ring 26 carrying the raceway 27 The mechanism is shown as mounted in and upon a casing 6 constituting the bed as it were of the machine, and in which casing are provided bosses 77 which constitute the bearings for the main driving or cam shaft 8, beneath which cam-shaft is shown a supplemental driving-shaft 9 mounted in bosses 10 of the casing. Shaft 8 is provided with a gear-wheel 11 fast thereon in mesh with a gear-wheel 12 fast upon the shaft 9. The driving-shafts are assumed to be continuously driven by means of a pulley 13 fast upon the driving-shaft 8 and driven from some suitable source of power, (not shown).
In the present organization the work-performing members, designated in a general way by A, are illustrated as type-dies 14 Specification of Letters Patent.

which are supported by a rotary carrier or head 15, the carrier being shown as provided with slide ways 16 in which are mounted slides 17 capable in the organization illustrated of movement in a plane transverse to the plane of rotation of the head. The head is shown as mounted upon a shaft 18, which is shown as u right and as transverse to the driving cams aft which in the drawings is shown as occupying a substantially horizontal position. It will be apparent, of course, that this arrangement may be changed in practice. In the present instance the head is organized to carry twenty typedies, there being five slide ways in each of which is mounted a slide provided with four dies. The number of slides and the number of dies upon each slide has, for the purpose of illustration herein, been arbitrarily selected. The die-slides are interchangeable, and if desired, the head may also be interchangeable, whereby a greater or less number of slides may be carried. The shaft 18 is shown as provided at its lower end with a reduced portion 19 stepped in a bearing 20 of a cross beam 21 rigid with the casing, and the upper end of the shaft is shown as held by an eye 22 carried by an arm 23 bolted to the top of the casing, which eye not only supports the rod but sustains the head from upward movement.
Each of the slides is provided with a lug or projection 24, and surrounding the head and secured to the frame by suitable screws 25 is shown a plate 26 provided with a channel 27 constituting a raceway wherein the lugs 24 may travel, which raceway serves to maintain the slides in their idle position. Adj acent to the working point or position, however, the raceway is provided with a transverse channel 27 whereby the slides may be shifted and their lugs raised out of channel 27.
In the present embodiment of my invention the parts are organized for continuous operation, each slide being brought serially into the region of the working position and certain selectors, manually operated or otherwise, may be employed for determining which die of the quota or group of dies upon the slide then at position will be brought to the exact working position. The entire set or series of members is moved angularly step by step. The entire number of dies are distributed upon slides, each slide having a quota of dies, which slides are capable of being moved transverse to the plane of such angular movement.
For imparting a step-by-step movement to the carrier a spiral gear may be employed comprising a worm wheel 28 fast upon the shaft 18 and a worm wheel 29 fast upon a shaft 30 journaled in bosses 31 in the frame of the machine and advanced step-by-step by means of a star wheel 32 fast on shaft 30, and in the present instance having as many arms 33 as there are slide ways upon the carrier, which star wheel in the present instance is moved by means of an arm 34 fast upon the shaft 8 and provided with a roller 35 for engaging the arms, whereby upon each rotation of the driving-wheel the head is ad vanced one step and the slide is moved from the vicinity of the general working position and another slide brought to such position. Each of the slides may be provided with a Working face, in the present instance constituting a lug 36 whereby some convenient device may be employed for taking hold of the slide and shifting it. There is shown located adjacent to the position occupied by such lug when the head has been brought to rest an arm 37 provided with a cavity organized to mate with such lug or projection, and upon shifting the arm after it has engaged the lug the slide may be shifted. The arm is shown as mounted upon a rock-shaft 38 mounted in a boss 39 upon the top plate of the inclosing casing and a bearing 40 in a bracket 41 of the frame. The rock shaft is shown as having an end projecting below the bearing and upon which end is mounted a head 42 provided with a slide 43 guided in ways 44 of the bracket 41 and provided with a depending leaf 440. To permit the shaft 38 to oscillate freely in the head 42 a channel or groove 380 is shown upon the portion within the head and a pin 382 running in the channel which holds the parts together and permits their ready disassemblage when desired.
There is shown mounted upon the supplemental driving-shaft a pair of cams 45, 46, which act uponda pair of arms 47, 48, res ectively, whici arms are fast upon a rock shaft 49, the arm 47 being organized to be acted upon by its cam and effective to rock the shaft in one direction and lock it in such position and the other arm and cam to rock the arm in the other direction and there lock it. An arm or lever 50 is mounted upon rock-shaft 49 and carries at its free end a series of fingers or push-pins 51, there being shown a number of fingers or pins equal to the number of dies upon each slide, so that upon any finger being pushed under the leaf 440 u on the rocking of the shaft 49 the arm 37 wi be raised a predetermined distance to bring a selected die to the working point or position. Each of the fingers is shown as in the form of a bell-crank-lever pivoted at 52 to the arm 50 and provided with some suitable means for returning it to idle position, in the present instance comprising a spring 53 bearing upon the arm 54 of the bell-cranklever and upon a fixed part of the arm 50. Suitable pins 55 may be employed for limiting the forward movement of the fingers and a back stop 56 may also be provided. Pivoted upon the same pivot 52 is shown an arm 57 having a hooked end 58 adapted on the elevation of arm 50 to project above the extreme upper portion of the leaf 440, whereby the shaft 38 may be returned to its normal position upon the lowering or return of arm 50 after it has been given an excursion by one of the fingers.
Manually operated selectors are shown, which in the present instance comprisefingerkeys 60 mounted upon key-levers 61 pivoted upon a suitable shaft 62 mounted in brackets 63 of the frame of the machine. Suitable means here shown as springs 64 may be employed for maintaining the keys at their normal or idle position. Upon the cross beam 21 at a position beneath the key-levers is shown an extension or shelf 65 wherein there are provided channels in each of which is located a push-pin 66. Suitable springs 67 may be employed for holding the push-pins at their inactive position, a removable plate 68 held on the shelf by means of screws 69 is shown for incasing the pins and springs. Each of the push-pins is located at the rear of one of the fingers 51 and in front of each push-pin is mounted a bell-crank-lever 70 loose upon a shaft 71 and having an end 72 adjacent to and adapted to engage with a push-pin and an end 73 beneath a finger or lug 74 upon the key-lever, whereby upon the depression of a key-lever one of the fingers will be pushed beneath the leaf 440 and upon the rocking of the shaft 49 the shaft 38 will be given an excursion and with it the arm 37.
For the purpose of bringing arm 37 in engagement with the slides the shaft 38 may be actuated by means of an arm or projection 78 secured to the shaft and lying in the path of an abutment 79 upon a link 80 which link is shown having a bifurcated end 81 resting upon the main cam or driving shaft and held in position between a collar 82 and the plane face of a cam-wheel 83, the cam face whereof is in engagement with a friction roll 84 upon such link whereby upon the link being given an excursion its abutmemt will engage the arm upon the sleeve and oscillate the same, causing the arm 37 to engage the slide, whereupon on such engagement if one of the jacks has been thrown under the leaf 144 the slide as well as the shaft 38 will be raised to bring the die corresponding with the depressed key into working position. After the arm has been raised and moved the slide, the cam face 85 upon the cam-wheel will come in contact with the roller 84 and advance the link 80 a further distance, which link is shown as pivoted at 86 to an arm 87 fast upon a rockshaft 88 mounted in suitable journals provided in bosses 89 on the frame and which also has fast thereon an arm 90 provided with a transverse elongated end or nose 91. Upon the advance of the arm 37 with the slide it comes opposite the end 91 of the arm 90 and upon the further advance of the link 80 it is pressed against the arm 37 and the slide which has been shifted is positioned and securely held by the pressure of the arm while at the point to receive the impact of Whatever work it is to perform.
In the present instance the work is not shown, but paper or other impression-receiving body may be passed thereto and in some cases may be in the form of ribbons or otherwise moved in front of the die, and between. such die and a suitable impressor, designated in a general way by 300, and shown as comprising a roll 92 mounted upon an arm 93 fast upon a rock-shaft 94 having suitable bearings 95 upon the top-plate of the casing, to which rock-shaft is fast an arm 96 and to which rock-shaft is pivoted a link 97 having a bifurcated end 98 embracing the main driving-shaft and held against the plane side face of a cam 99 by means of a collar 100, and which link is provided with a roller 101 riding upon the cam face of the wheel 99 whereby the link is advanced. A suitable spring 102 may be employed for returnirg the impressor and parts to their normal position. A suitable spring 103 may be employed for returning the link 80 to its normal position and oscillating the shaft 38 in the present instance shown as coiled around the shaft and secured thereto by means of a pin and secured to the bracket 40 by means of a pm.
For the purpose of holding the key-levers depressed until they have performed their entire work, each key-lever is shown as provided with a hook or engaging surface 105 adapted to engage a hook 106 pivoted therebelow u on a shaft 107 mounted in a bracket 108 of t e frame. The hook may be tripped after the operation is performed by means of a link 109 provided with a bifurcated end embracing the supplemental driving-shaft and having a roll 110 riding upon the face 111 of a cam 112 on such shaft, which link is pivoted to a lever 113 which is pivoted to the shaft 107 and has at its end 114 a pin 115 which will engage the hook 106 and draw it out of engagement with the hook 105, whereupon the lever held thereby will be permitted to assume its normal position responsive to the returning means employed therefor. Some means may be employed for returning the latch or hook 106 to its normal position and for causing it to lock with the hooks 105 after having been displaced by the contact of the two hooks. A spring 116 is here shown for such purpose, and a spring 117 is shown for raising the arm or lever 113, and moving the buffer 115 from contact with the latch. This spring also holds the roll 110 against the cam face 111.
The operation of the mechanical movement herein is as follows :The pulley is supposed to be driven continuously from some suitable source of power and to rotate in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 1, which will continuously rotate the main driving-shaft and the supplemental driving-shaft in gear therewith. The striker upon the main cam or driving shaft upon coming up will by its antifriction-roll engage one of the points or arms of the star wheel and shift the star wheel a step, which, through the spiral gear upon the star-wheel shaft and the shaft of the head, will advance or shift the head or carrier one step and permit it to rest with one of the die-slides adjacent to or in the general vicinity of the working point. All the other die-slides are held in idle position by means of their lugs traveling in the channel or raceway around the head and the dieslide which is halted in the vicinity of the Working point is contiguous to the transverse channel. After this angular shifting of all the dies the quota upon the slide referred to may be shifted individually, the amount of movement being selective, for which urpose the arm for engaging the slide wil be oscillated by means of the cam, link and sleeve provided for such purpose. The shifting, however, of the slide will be dependent upon whether or not one of the fingers upon the lifting arm has been pushed forward by means of a selector and its connected mechanism under the end of the shaft carrying the arm, whereby the amount of movement of the excursions imparted to the rock-arm will be determined. After the engaging arm has shifted the slide the organization of cams and levers is such that the supplemental pressing arm will be forced into engagement with the lifting arm and securely hold the slide in its shifted position, whereupon the further timing of the cams will actuate the impressor and the die will perform its work. The selectors, here illustrated as key-levers, will be locked in their depressed or active position to positively hold the selected finger in its advanced position until the time has arrived in the operation of the machine to permit the fingers to be withdrawn, when the machine will automatically release the key-lever and with it the parts holding the fingers at rest.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. The combination of a plurality of work-' ing members arranged in arbitrary quotas power-driven means for placing each quota seriat'im into a position wherefrom any member thereof may be brought to working position; manually-actuated means for selecting a member thereof; automatic means for locking the selecting means; means for bringing the selected member to working position; power driven means cooperative with the positioned member; and means controlled by the same power for automatically unlocking the selecting means.
2. The combination with a plurality of work-performing members, of several slides upon each of which an equal number of members is mounted, the respective positions upon the several slides having uniform relation to a working point; a cooperative member for working at such point; an arm; a finger thereon for each of the several positions and capable of shifting the slide; a selector for each finger; automatic means for locking the selector; and automatic means for actuating the cooperative means and unlocking the selector.
3. The combination with a carrier, of a plurality of slides shiftable thereon; a plurality of dies upon each slide, the die positions upon the several slides having uniform relation to a working point; means for moving the carrier step by ste means for engaging the slides individualfy in turn to shift the same; means to shift the engaging means; and means to be interposed therebetween to determine the die position shifted to the working point.
4. The combination with a plurality of dies, of an impressor cooperative therewith; powerdriven means for actuating the impressor; manually operative selectors for each die; means for locking each selector after its actuation; and means actuated by the impressor-driving means for unlocking the selector.
5. The combination with an arm carrying a number of movable members; a rock-shaft upon which the arm is mounted; a camshaft adjacent thereto; cams on the camshaft; a pair of arms carried by the rockshaft; engaging cam faces upon opposite sides of the cam-shaft; a selector for each of the movable members; and means actuated by the selector for moving the selected mem ber.
o. The combination with a rock-shaft, of an arm thereon; a series of bell-orank-levers pivoted to the arm; s rings to hold them in normal position; a pus in behind each bellcrank-lever; an angle lbver for advancing each push-pin; and a series of selectors each operative upon one of the angle levers.
7. The combination with a plurality of dies; a slide upon which the dies are mounted; an impressor; means for engaging the slide to move a selected die to the working point of the impressor; power-driven means for actuating the impressor; a rock-shaft actuated from the same driving power; an arm carried by the rock-shaft; a finger thereon for each of the dies; a pin for advancing each finger; a selector for advancing each pin; means for locking the selector after the advance of the finger; and means actuated by the general driving power for releasing the selector after the actuation of the impressor.
8. The combination with a series of dies; power-driven means for cooperating with the dies; power-driven means for bringing a selected die to working osition; selective means for determining wiich die shall be so brought; means for locking the selector; and means controlled by the general driving power for releasing the lock.
9. The combination with a reciprocatory rock-shaft; bearings in which the shaft may move; a sleeve surrounding the shaft through which it may reciprocate; means for oscillating the sleeve; means for communicatin the oscillation of the sleeve to the shaft; a head u on the shaft in which it may oscillate but which will reciprocate with it; a slide upon the head; ways in which the slide may travel; a leaf u on the head; a series of movable fingers a jacent to the leaf and of different lengths; means for moving the fingers in the direction in which the shaft can reciprocate; and means for moving a selected finger into engagement with the leaf.
10. The combination with a reciprocatory rock-shaft; bearings in which the shaft may move; a sleeve surrounding the shaft through which it may reciprocate; means for oscillating the sleeve; means for communicating the oscillation of the sleeve to the shaft; a head upon the shaft in which it may oscillate but which will reciprocate with it; a slide upon the head; ways in which the slide may travel; a leaf upon the head; a series of movable fingers adjacent to the leaf and of difierent lengths; means for moving the fingers in the direction in which the shaft can reciprocate; means for moving a selected finger into engagement with the leaf; and a finger adapted to engage the opposite side of the leaf and to return with the fingers for returning the shaft.
11. The combination with a plurality of selectors of members upon which the selectors are operative; means for locking a selector after its actuation; means for cooperating with the selected member; means for driving the cooperative means; and means controlled by the same driving means for releasing the selector lock.
12. In means for moving a member variously effective in each of a number of positions, the combination with means capable of reciprocation and oscillation for engaging and shifting the member, of an arm oscillating in the direction of the reciprocation thereof; a lurality of fingers carried by the arm and o' varying lengths corresponding to the varying positions in which the member is effective and organized to engage the shifting means; means for causing a selected finger to engage therewith; and means for oscillating the arm.
13. In means for moving a plurality of dies mounted upon a slide, whereby each die may be brought to a determined position, the combination with a lug upon the slide, of an oscillatory and reciprocatory shifter adapted to engage the lug; automatic means for oscillating the shifter into engagement with the lug; means for reciprocating the shifter a determined distance and comprising an oscillatory arm; a series of fingers of different lengths arranged thereon each adapted to advance the shifter a determined distance; means for selecting one of the fingers; means for locking the selecting means; means for oscillating the arm to cause the selected finger to reciprocate the member; means for returning the arm; and means for releasing the selecting means.
14. In means for moving a plurality of dies mounted upon a slide, whereby each die may be brought to a determined position, the combination with a lug upon the slide, of an oscillatory and reciprocatory shifter adapted to engage the lug; automatic means for oscillating the shifter into engagement with the lug; means for reciprocating the shifter a determined distance and comprising an oscillatory arm; a series of fingers of different lengths arranged thereon each adapted to advance the shifter a determined distance; means for selecting one of the fingers; means for locking the selecting means; means for oscillating the arm to cause the selected finger to reciprocate the member; means for returning the arm; means for releasing the selecting means; and automatic means for locking and sustaining the shifter.
15. The combination with a plurality of dies arranged in arbitrary divisions; an impressor; means for automatically bringing each division adjacent to the impressor; a manually-operated selector for bringing an individual in such division to the impressor; means for locking the selector in its selective position; automatic means for operating the impressor and automatic means for releasing the selector.
16. The combination with a rotary head, of a plurality of slideways thereon; a plurality of slides each bearing a number of dies and organized to operate in slideways automatic means for advancing the head step by step and halting it with each slideway in turn adjacent to the working position of the dies; a reciprocatory member for engaging each slide and capable of moving all the (lies thereon into working position; means for reciprocating the member and comprising a series of fingers adapted to engage therewith and each capable of imparting a different degree of movement; selectors for determining which finger shall engage the reciprocatory member; automatic means for raising the fingers and causing the selected finger to advance the member the selected distance; automatic means for holding the finger and member in position; automatic means for positively returning the finger and member; means for locking the selector upon its actuation; and automatic means for releasing the selector.
17. The combination with a rotary carrier head provided with a plurality of slideways, of slides mounted in said ways and shiftable parallel to the axis of rotation of the head, a series of dies having a plurality of these arranged upon each slide, an impressor with which the dies may operate, means for holding the slides in idle position until brought adjacent to the impressor, means for rotating the head step by step and permitting the same to stop with one of the slides adjacent the impressor, an arm for engaging the slide so stopped for shifting the same, means for bringing the arm into engagement with the slide, a selector for each die position upon the slide, means actuated by the selectors for determining the amount of movement of the slide, means for locking the selector in its actuated position, power actuated means for cooperation with the means for determining the movement of the slides and for releasing the lock of the selector.
18. The combination with a reciprocatory rock-shaft, of a driver; an engaging member upon the shaft and organized to oscillate and reciprocate therewith; a rotary head adjacent to the arm; means actuated by the driver for automatically rotating the head step by step; a series of slideways on the head; a series of slides in the slideways; a series of selectors; means actuated by said driver and controlled by the selectors for reciprocating the shaft to a selected distance; means for locking the actuated selector; automatic means actuated by said driver for releasing the selector; whereby the parts are actuated automatically in sequence, under control as to degree by a selector, upon the actuation of which the member will be caused to engage one of the slides and advance the same a predetermined distance to the end that one of a series of members or positions arranged upon the slide may be brought to a certain point and upon the ad vance ofthe driver the selector released automatically in time for actuation to control the next cycle of the device.
19. The combination with a shil'table carrier, of a plurality of slides mounted in guideways in said carrier, a plurality of work performing members on each slide and adjust able therewith, means for shifting said carrier to position, the slide carrying the selective member, means for selectively shifting the said slide and thereby locating the selected member approximately in its working position, a device for pressing the selected slide firmly against its guiding surfaces, and means for actuating said device and locking the same against movement during the working of said members.
20. The combination with a carrier, of a slide mounted to be freely shiftable thereon, a locator for shifting the slide different distances to the approximate redetermined distance, and a precisionizing evice comprising a rock arm and an engaging member for pressing the slide against its guiding surface and thereby giving it its final position.
21. The combination with a carrier provided with a guideway having a slide fitted to said guideway to be freely shiftable thereon, an oscillatory device for shifting the slide different distances to its approximate pre determined position, and an oscillatory precisioner device for pressing the slide against its uiding surface and thereby giving it its fina position.
22. The combination with an adjustable carrier, of a lurality of slides mounted to be freely shifta le thereon, a locator comprising a reciprocating and oscillatory arm for engaging and shifting a determinate slide different distances to its approximate predetermined position, and a precisionizing device com rising an oscillatory arm for pressing the s ide against the guiding surface and giving it its final position.
23. The combination with a carrier, of a slide mounted to be freely shiftable thereon, a locator for shifting the slide different distances to the approximate predetermined distance, and a precisionizing device comprising a rock arm, an engaging member for pressing the slide against its guiding surface and thereby giving it its final position, and means for actuating said locator and rock arm in sequence.
24. The combination with a carrier provided with a guideway having a slide fitted to said guideway to be freely shiftable thereon, an oscillatory device for shifting the slide different distances to its approximate redetermined position, an oscillatory preclsioner device for pressing the slide against its guid ing surface and thereby giving it its final position, and means for oscillating said device and precisioner in proper sequence.
25. The combination with an adjustable carrier, of a lurality of slides mounted to be freely shifta le thereon, a locator comprising a reciprocating and oscillatory arm for engaging and shifting a determinate slide different distances to its approximate predetermined position, a precisionizing device com rising an oscillatory arm for pressing the s ide against the guiding surface and giving it its final position, and means for oscillating said arms in sequence.
26. The combination with a plurality of dies arranged in arbitrary divisions, an impressor, power operated means for bringing each division adjacent to the impressor, a manually operated selector for bringing an individual in such division to the impressor, means for locking the selector in its selective position, power operated means for actuating the impressor, and means for automatically releasing the selector after the actuation of the impressor.
27. The combination with a series of dies arranged in a number of arbitrary divisions, an impressor, power operated means for actuating the same, power operated means for bringing each division adjacent to the impressor, a manually operated selector for bringing an individual in such division to the impressor, means for locking the selector in its selective position, and means for automatically releasing the selector after the actuation of the impressor.
28. The combination with a series of dies arranged in a number of arbitrary divisions, means for bringing each division adjacent to the impressor, a manually operated selector for bringing a die in such division to the impressor, means for locking the selector in its selective position, means for releasing the selector, and power operated means for actuating the division shifting means, the impressor, and the selector releasing means.
29. The combination with a rock-shaft, of an arm mounted thereon, a number of movable members carried by said arm, a cam shaft provided with cams, a pair of arms carried by the rock-shaft and engaging cam faces upon opposite sides of the cam shaft, a selector for each of the movable members, and means actuated by the selector for moving the selected member.
30. The combination with an arm carrying a number of movable members, a rockshaft upon which the arm is mounted, a camshaft adjacent thereto, cams on the camshaft, a pair of arms carried by the rockshaft and engaging cam faces upon opposite sides of the cam-shaft, selective means for the movable members, and means actuated by the selective means for moving the selected member.
31. The combination with a rotary carrier head provided with a plurality of slideways disposed parallel to its axis of rotation, of slides mounted in the said slideways, a plurality of dies arranged upon each of said slides, an impressor cooperative with the dies at a fixed working position, a continuously rotating driving cam shaft, means controlled by the shaft for rotating the head step by step, and stopping the same With one of the slides adjacent to the impressor, a reciprocatory rock shaft, means upon the rock shaft for engaging the slide so stopped for advancing the same, means for rocking the shaft and bringing the en aging means into engagement with the side, a selector for each die position, a number of fingers equal to the number of die positions, means controlled by the cam shaft for raising and lowering the fingers, and means controlled by the selectors for placing the fingers into position to engage said rock shaft.
32. The combination with a rotary carrier head provided with a plurality of slideways disposed parallel to its axis of rotation, of slides mounted in the said slideways, a plu rality of dies arranged upon each of said slides, an impressor cooperative with the dies at a fixed working position, a continu ously rotating driving cam shaft, means for rotating the head step by step, a reciprocatory rock shaft, an arm upon the rock shaft for engaging a slide stopped adjacent to the impressor for advancing the same, a sleeve surrounding the rock shaft, means effective to move the sleeve to rock the shaft and bring the arm into engagement with the slide, a selector for each die position, a rock shaft, a number of fingers carried by the rock shaft and equal in number to the number of positions, means for advancing each finger controlled by the selectors, means for locking the actuated selector, a slide mounted upon the reciprocatory rock shaft, a leaf dependent from said rock shaft for the engagement of the advanced finger, means for oscillating the rock shaft to which the fingers are attached, means for actuating the impressor, and means for releasing the selector lock.
