WRENCH.
Application filed April 28,
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, SOLOMON V. REHART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lakeview, in the county of Lake and State of Oregon, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in \Vrenches, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an improved form of hand wrench, constructed for use either upon cylindrical objects such as pipes, or polygonal objects such as nuts.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts as fully pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawingsFigure 1 is a side view of my wrench in partial section on the line 1, 1, of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is an edge view. Fig. 3 shows a vibrating jaw lever separately, which lever is provided with a convex spherical projection for entering the socket in the sliding stock. Fig. l is a modified form of said lever in which the projection of cylindrical shape. Fig. 5 shows in section the arrangement of a detachable block containing the socket to receive the projection on the lever; and Fig. 6 shows said block separate and in perspective.
Similar numbers of reference indicate like parts.
2 is the shank extended to form a handle and having integrally formed with it, the stationary jaw 3, which is serrated on its working face. 011 one edge of the shank are formed rack teeth to receive the worm 5. Said worm is received in a recess on the rear side of the sliding stock 6, and rotates freely on an adjustable pin 7 which passes through the lug 8 and is threaded to enter the solid portion 9 of the stock between which lug and solid portion said recess is formed. By turning the worm 5, the stock may be adjusted as desired'along the shank.
The front edge 10 of the shank is straight and has bearing upon it two cross pieces 11 and 12 which extend across the space between the side walls 13, 14, of the stock. The cross piece 11 is approximately triangular in cross section, with its longest side bearing, as stated, on the front edge of the shank. In another side is formed a concave recess which receives and forms a bearing for a convex lug or projection 15 formed on a lever 16, which carries the jaw 17. Said jaw is serrated on its working face and cooperates with jaw 3. The lever 16 is extended beyond the projection 15 to form a Specification of Letters Patent.

thumb piece 18 in which is a recessto receive one end of a helical spring 19: the other end of which is received in a recess in the cross piece 11.
In order to retain the projection 15 in its socket, a pin 20 is provided which passes through the side walls 13, 14, and through an aperture of larger diameter than itself in the projection 15. So that the projection is thus permitted to become closely seated in its socket, and so that strain on the lever 16 is received by-the cross piece 11 and not by the pin 20. The effect of the spring 19 is normally to throw the inner edge 21 of the jaw 17 (which edge is made straight) into contact with the edge 10 of the shank, and when the jaw 17 is in this normal position, its working face is parallel to the working face of jaw 3, as shown in Fig. 1. In this way the jaw 17 becomes braced and supported at its inner edge by the shank when the wrench is used as a nut wrench.
The side walls 13 and 14 of the stock have projecting lugs 22 between which extends a cross bar 23, which limits the outward swing of the jaw 17 and also supports said jaw when brought into contact with it, during the operation of the wrench.
The convex lug or projection 15 may be cylindrical as shown in Fig. 4, or spherical as shown in Fig. 3. The socket may be formed directly in the cross bar 11 or in a separate block 24:, Figs. 5 and 6, which is inserted between the walls 13 and 14, and rests against the cross-bar 11. Beyond the stock, the jaw 17 is made wider than the lever 16 and to correspond in this respect to the fixed jaw 3.
When the wrench is used upon nuts or other polygonal objects, the stock is moved to adjust the distance between the jaws and the tool is operated in the ordinary way. hen the wrench is used upon pipes or the like, the lever is swung outwardly by pushing in, the thumb piece and the pipe then grasped between the jaws and the tool operated in proper direction to cause the serrations to bite the pipe surface and so rotate the pipe. It is to be noted that the stock 6 has no tilting movement but that on the contrary, it bears internally on the edges of the shank, sliding directly upon the straight edge 10 and upon the outer flat surfacesof the rack teeth.

In a wrench, a shank, a stationary jaw carried thereby, a sliding stock having a constant bearing on both the front and the rear edge of said shank, means for adjusting said stock on said shank, a jaw cooperating withsaid stationary jaw, a swinging lever carrying said cooperating jaw and having a convex supporting lug received and bearing in a socket in said stock, an extension on said lever beyond said socket, a spring between said extension and said stock and means for holding said lever in said stock.

In a wrench, a shank, a stationary jaw thereon, a sliding stock on said shank and having a constant bearing on both the front and the rear edge of said shank, means for holding said slide in adjusted position on said shank, a swinging lever having a jaw at one end, a thumb piece at the other end and a convex supporting lug on its inner side between said aw and said thumb piece and constructed to enter a correspondingly formed concave socket in said stock, a spring interposed between said lever and said stock and a pin passing through the walls of said stock and said lever; the aperture in said lever receiving said pin being of greater diameter than said pin to permit said lug to obtain a bearing in said socket.

In a wrench, a shank, a stationary jaw carried by said shank, a sliding stock on said'shank having a fixed bearing on both the front and the rear edge of said shank, a jaw cooperating with said stationary jaw, a swinging lever carrying said cooperating jaw and having a supporting convex lug received and bearing in a socket in said stock, means for manually operating said lever, means for holding said lever in said stock and resilient meansfor normally holding said cooperating jaw in position with its working face parallel to the working face of said fixed jaw.
6. In a wrench, a shank, a stationary aw carried by said shank, a sliding stock on said shank, a detachable bearing piece in said stock, a jaw cooperating with said stationary aw, a swinging lever carrying said cooperating jaw, and having a convex supporting lug received and bearing in a socket in said bearing piece and means for holding said lever in said stock.
7. In a wrench, a shank having a straight front edge, a stationary jaw carried by said shank and protruding from said edge, a nontiltable sliding stock internally bearing directly on both the front edge and the rear edge of said shank, a jaw cooperating with said stationary jaw and having its inner edge straight, a swinging lever supported on said stock and carrying said cooperating jaw, means for manually operating said lever, and a spring interposed between said lever and sald stock and normally operating to hold the inner edge of said lever jaw in" contact with said shank straight edge.
