To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, HERBERT E. LIPS- COMB and AUeUs'rUs H. ANDREWS, citizens of the United States residing at Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Im provements in Means for Sealing Cigars, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to an improved method and means for sealing cigars. it has for its object to provide a sealing medium for box goods by means of which the pack of cigars may be so sealed and bound en bloc within the box, as to preserve the proper condition of the goods, and prevent endwise shifting of the individual cigars and breaking of delicate wrappers.

In the drawings herewith inwhich we have illustrated one form of our invention, that it may be clear to those skilled in the art, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cigar box with one end cut away to illustrate more fully the construction. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the inner sealing flaps infolded.

Fig. 3 is a cross section of a filled box with the goods and flaps in sealed position. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the sealing sheet.

Referring to the drawings by numerals, like numbers indicating like parts in the several views, 2 designates a box of the ordinary or any suitable ty e, which is provided. with front and bac liners 4 and 5, res ectively, the front liner 4 extending partia y across the box bottom and being preferably secured thereto at its inner end by a suitable adhesive. The said front liner 4 has afree folding flap 6, which, when the box is packed and closed is infolded over the goods, as shown in Fig. 3.

The rear liner 5 is preferably secured by a suitable adhesive to the rear wall of the box and has a free flap 7 which extends partly across the box bottom and overlaps the inner portion of the front liner 4.

Interleaved between the front liner 4 and the back liner 5, so as to underlie the latter and overlie the former, as shown best in Fig. 1, is an intermediate sealing sheet 8, said sheet 8 being secured by a suitable adhesive to the rear wall of the box and having an infolding sealing flap 9 coextensive wlth, the superficial area of the box which takes the position shown in Fig. 3, when the box is closed. The said sealing sheet 8 at its rear end extends upwardly along the rear wall of the box to the upper edge thereof, as shown at 10, Fig. 1, and at a point preferably midway the length of the box is a sealing tab 11, preferably formed integral with the sheet 8 and extending above the rear wall of the box as shown, and this sealing tab 11 may, if desired, be backed by an ornamental tab 12. The function of this sealing tab 11 is to form a sealing means for holding the sealing flap 9 of the sheet 8 in place when the box is packed and sealed, as best shown in Fig. 2, the flap 9 and tab 11 being secured by a suitable adhesive preferably at the center of the flap 9, the tab 11 being as shown, a small centrally placed projection from the sealin sheet 8. This arrangement of liners and sea 'ng sheet not only gives an ornamental lining, but one which is conveniently adapted to a secure and complete sealing of the cigars, for the intermediate sealing sheet 8, which is preferably of paraffin paper or a material which is moisture proof, not only protects the cigars and keeps them in proper condition, but by being drawn about and sealed as described, it holds them in firm, unshifting position within the box.

It is obvious that some variations from the construction disclosed may be made without departing from our invention, and we do not therefore limit ourselves to any of the details shown and described, except so far as we are limited by the prior art to which the invention belongs.

We claim 2-- 1. A cigar box provided with front and back liners, one of which has a free folding flap, and a sealing sheet interleaved between said liners.

2. A cigar box provided with a front liner extending partly across and secured to the box bottom, and having a free folding flap, a back liner secured to the rear of the box and having a free flap extending partly across the box bottom and lapped upon said front liner, and a sealing sheet interleaved between said liners and having a free folding flap.

3. A cigar box provided with a front liner extending partly across and secured to the box bottom, and having a free folding flap, a rear liner secured to the rear wall of the box and having a free flap extending partly across the box bottom and lapped upon said front liner, a sealing sheet interleaved between said liners and having a free folding flap, and means for sealing said flap down in folded position.

4. A cigar box provided with a front liner extending partly across and secured to the box bottom and having a free folding flap, a back liner secured to the rear wall of the box and having a free flap extending partly across the boxabottom and lapped upon said front liner, a sealing sheet interleaved between said liners and having a free folding flap, and a sealing tab at the opposite side of the box to engage and seal said sealing flap in folded position.

5. A cigar box provided with a sealing sheet having a free sealing flap coextensive with the superficial area of the box, and a flap-engaging sealing tab cemented to said flap to hold the sheet in folded position.

6. A cigar box provided with a pasted-in sealing sheet having a free sealing flap co-extensive with the superficial area of the box at the front thereof, and a free sealing tab of relatively small size at the rear thereof to engage -the center of said flaps and seal it in folded position.

7. A cigar box provided with front and back liners, a sealing sheet interleaved and secured between said liners, a front sealing flap on said sheet, and a rear sealing tab on said sheet to engage and hold said flap in folded position.
