To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY L. MoHUuH, citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and. State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Motor-Controllers, of which the following'is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to multiple voltage controllers.
In the patent to Dunn N 0. 797,271, granted Au 15, 1905, there is described a multi ple-vo tage controller in which a fixed resistance is temporarily out into the armature circuit whenever the connections of the' armature are changed from one set of mains to another. This resistance, now commonly known as a buffer resistance, serves to pre-x vent excessive surges of current through the arm ature when the impressed voltage thereon is either increased. or decreased. In' the Dunn patent this bufl'er resistance is inserted in circuit by raising one of the contactfingors from the controller drum, thereby opening a short circuit around the resistance. This is found to be an unsatisfactory way, because of the double movementof the drum and the finger, and because there is only,a oint or line contact between the finger an its cooperating contact segment on the drum. T 0 present invention is intended to overcome this difficulty by having the bufier resistance inserted by a switch separate from the controller drum and its fingers, but operated by the drum in its rotation.
In one aspect my' invention consists of the combination of a controller arranged to impress different voltages on a motor armature, with a resistance in the motor armature circuit, and a mechanicalll u erated switch separate from the control or um and its cooperating contact fingers and arrangpd to normally short-circuit said resistance lit to open said short-circuit whenever the voltage impressed on the motorarmature is varied.
In a more specific aspect my invention consists of a multiple-voltage controller, a motor controlled thereby, a resistance in the armature circuit of said. motor, a switch biased to closed position to short-circuit said resistance, said switch being separate from the controller drum but arranged to be 0 ened thereby to include said resistance in t e armature circuit whenever the armature casing partly connections are changed from one set of mains to another, and a device for retarding the closing of said switch.

The controller drum has contact segments 33 arranged to cooperate with contact fingers 34 to'fil inclusive to connect the armature of motor M to difi erent sets of the mains a, b, c and d. The drum also has a ring 4 and segments41 arranged to coop crate with contact fingers 42 to 48 inclusive to vary the resistance r in the field circuit of motor M.

By the arrangement of levers here set forth a small movement of the roller 50 causes a large movement of the an itch 5;, and a still larger movement of the dash-pot. Moreover with the switch 52 and tho dash-pot 56 on opposite sides of the controller, and both near the outside casing, it is easy to inspect and repair both of them. To inspect the dash-pot it is only necessary to remove pin 55' and swing the dash-pot around on its pivot 56.
When the controller is'moved to change the armature connections from one set of mains to another,'the cam projections on cam wheel 49 move lever 51 to open the switch 52, and to include the resistance R in The movement of the switch 52 is not retarded in this direction. As soon as the change of armature connections has been made, the s ring 53 begins to expand to force the swito 52 toward closed position. This movement of the switch, however, is retarded by the dash-pot 56 until the switch is nearly closed, when a lay-pass 58 around the piston 01' the dash-pot is reached, thus allowing a quick closing movement of the switch 52. In the controller shown the resistance R is included in circuit when the controller passes between positions 7 and 8, 14 and 15, 18 and 19, 21 and 22, and 23 and 24, and also when it passes to or from off position. Between the positions just mentioned the armature connections are changed from one set of mains to another. Between any other two adjacent positions, the controller merely varies the resistance 1' in the field circuit of the motor. This field resistance is arranged to be increased as the controller is moved forward between those adjacent positions where the armature connections are not varied, thus increasing the speed of the motor, but to be cut out whenever the armature connections are varied, thus insuring a strong field whenever a higher voltage is impressed on the armature.
It is obvious that the art of the controller which controls the fiel resistance may be varied as desired, and that the part which controls the armature connections may be adapted to any multiple-voltage system and arranged if desired to reverse the armature current. These modifications as well as many others which readily occur to one skilled in the art may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, and
are intended to be covered by the following claims.
What I claim is:
1. A controller arranged to impress different volta es on a motor armature, a resistance in t 1e motor armature circuit, and a mechanically o erated switch separate from the controller t rum and its cooperating contact fingers and arranged to normally shortcircuit said; resistance, but to open said short-circuit whenever the voltage impressed on the motor armature is varied.
2. A multiplevoltage controller, a motor controlled thereby, a resistance for the armature circuit of said motor, a switch normally closed to short-circuit said resistance, said switch being separate from the controller drum but arranged to be opened thereby to effectively include said resistance in the armature circuit whenever the armature connections are changed from one set of mains to another.
3. A multiple-voltage controller, a motor controlled thereby, a resistance in the armature circuit of said motor, a switch normally closed to short-circuit said resistance, said switch being separate from the controller drum but arranged to be opened thereby to break said short-circuit whenever the armature connections are changed from one,set of mains to another, and a device for retarding the closing movement of said switch.
4. A multiple-voltage controller, a motor controlled thereby, a resistance for the armature circuit of said motor, a switch normally closed to short-circuit said resistance, said switch being separate from the controller drum but arranged to be opened thereby to effectively include said resistance in the armature circuit whenever the armaturc connections are changed from one set of mains to another, and means tending to close said switch.
5. A multiple-voltage controller, a motor controlled thereby, a resistance in the armature circuit of said motor, a switch normally closed to short-circuit said resistance, said switch being separate from the controller drum but arranged to be opened thereby to break said short-circuit whenever the armature connections are changed from one set of mains to another, means tending to clo c said switch, and a time-limit device for ret rding such closure.

A motor control system comprising a motor, multiple-voltage supply mains, a controller arranged to connect the motor armature between different sets of the mains and to vary the resistance in the motor field circuit, a resistance in the motor armature circuit, and a switch separate from the controller drum but arranged to be operated thereby to include said resistance in circuit whenever the armature connections are changed to a different set of mains.
16. A motor control system comprising a motor, multiplewoltagc supply mains, a controller arranged to connect the motor armature between dill'erent sets ol the mains and to vary the resistance in the motor iicld circuit, a resistance in the motor armature circuit, and a switch separate from the controller drum but arraiwed to be operated thereby to include sai resistance temporarily m circuit whenever the armature connections are changed to a different set of mains, said switch being free from movement by the controller when the latter merely varies the field resistance.
17. In a controller, a rotatable drum, a switch separate from said drum and arranged to be opened by said drum when the latter is moved between certain positions, means which tends to close said switch, and a dashpot for retarding said closing, said switch and said dash-pot being on opposite sides of the drum.
18.
